    A burst from the direction of UZ Fornacis with XMM-Newton

    The XMM-Newton pointing towards the magnetic cataclysmic variable UZ For finds the source to be a factor > 10^3 fainter than previous EXOSAT and ROSAT observations. The source was not detected for the majority of a 22 ksec exposure with the EPIC cameras, suggesting that the accretion rate either decreased, or stopped altogether. However a 1.1 ksec burst was detected from UZ For during the observation. Spectral fits favour optically thin, kT = 4.4 keV thermal emission. Detection of the burst by the on-board Optical Monitor indicates that this was most probably an accretion event. The 0.1-10 keV luminosity of 2.1 x 10^30 erg/s is typical for accretion shock emission from high state polars and would result from the potential energy release of ~ 10^16 g of gas.     Incomplete Incorporation of Tandem Subunits in Recombinant Neuronal Nicotinic Receptors

    Tandem constructs are increasingly being used to restrict the composition of recombinant multimeric channels. It is therefore important to assess not only whether such approaches give functional channels, but also whether such channels completely incorporate the subunit tandems. We have addressed this question for neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, using a channel mutation as a reporter for subunit incorporation. We prepared tandem constructs of nicotinic receptors by linking α (α2–α4, α6) and β (β2, β4) subunits by a short linker of eight glutamine residues. Robust functional expression in oocytes was observed for several tandems (β4_α2, β4_α3, β4_α4, and β2_α4) when coexpressed with the corresponding β monomer subunit. All tandems expressed when injected alone, except for β4_α3, which produced functional channels only together with β4 monomer and was chosen for further characterization. These channels produced from β4_α3 tandem constructs plus β4 monomer were identical with receptors expressed from monomer α3 and β4 constructs in acetylcholine sensitivity and in the number of α and β subunits incorporated in the channel gate. However, separately mutating the β subunit in either the monomer or the tandem revealed that tandem-expressed channels are heterogeneous. Only a proportion of these channels contained as expected two copies of β subunits from the tandem and one from the β monomer construct, whereas the rest incorporated two or three β monomers. Such inaccuracies in concatameric receptor assembly would not have been apparent with a standard functional characterization of the receptor.     A two-target model was developed for the simulations of Coherent Diffraction Radiation (CDR) phenomenon for the experiment at the CLIC Test Facility 3 (CTF3 at CERN). The model is based on a classical DR theory. The radiation distribution from the targets, as a function of the angle and the frequency, was calculated for the first and the second target separately in order to understand how the final radiation distribution from the two targets, working as a system, is formed. The final radiation distribution of destructive interference between the two targets was obtained as well. The distributions were calculated for the working parameters of both the CTF3 and the experimental setup and were used for a single-electron spectrum calculation, required for the bunch profile reconstruction

    Higher education, mature students and employment goals: policies and practices in the UK

    This article considers recent policies of Higher Education in the UK, which are aimed at widening participation and meeting the needs of employers. The focus is on the growing population of part-time students, and the implications of policies for this group. The article takes a critical perspective on government policies, using data from a major study of mature part-time students, conducted in two specialist institutions in the UK, a London University college and a distance learning university. Findings from this study throw doubt on the feasibility of determining a priori what kind of study pathway is most conducive for the individual in terms of employment gains and opportunities for upward social mobility. In conclusion, doubts are raised as to whether policies such as those of the present UK government are likely to achieve its aims. Such policies are not unique to the UK, and lessons from this country are relevant to most of the developed world

    Comparison of stimulus-evoked cerebral hemodynamics in the awake mouse and under a novel anesthetic regime

    Neural activity is closely followed by a localised change in cerebral blood flow, a process termed neurovascular coupling. These hemodynamic changes form the basis of contrast in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and are used as a correlate for neural activity. Anesthesia is widely employed in animal fMRI and neurovascular studies, however anesthetics are known to profoundly affect neural and vascular physiology, particularly in mice. Therefore, we investigated the efficacy of a novel ‘modular’ anesthesia that combined injectable (fentanyl-fluanisone/midazolam) and volatile (isoflurane) anesthetics in mice. To characterize sensory-evoked cortical hemodynamic responses, we used optical imaging spectroscopy to produce functional maps of changes in tissue oxygenation and blood volume in response to mechanical whisker stimulation. Following fine-tuning of the anesthetic regime, stimulation elicited large and robust hemodynamic responses in the somatosensory cortex, characterized by fast arterial activation, increases in total and oxygenated hemoglobin, and decreases in deoxygenated hemoglobin. Overall, the magnitude and speed of evoked hemodynamic responses under anesthesia resembled those in the awake state, indicating that the novel anesthetic combination significantly minimizes the impact of anesthesia. Our findings have broad implications for both neurovascular research and longitudinal fMRI studies that increasingly require the use of genetically engineered mice

    Economic choices can be made using only stimulus values

    Decision-making often involves choices between different stimuli, each of which is associated with a different physical action. A growing consensus suggests that the brain makes such decisions by assigning a value to each available option and then comparing them to make a choice. An open question in decision neuroscience is whether the brain computes these choices by comparing the values of stimuli directly in goods space or instead by first assigning values to the associated actions and then making a choice over actions. We used a functional MRI paradigm in which human subjects made choices between different stimuli with and without knowledge of the actions required to obtain the different stimuli. We found neural correlates of the value of the chosen stimulus (a postdecision signal) in ventromedial prefrontal cortex before the actual stimulus–action pairing was revealed. These findings provide support for the hypothesis that the brain is capable of making choices in the space of goods without first transferring values into action space

    Broadband X-ray spectral analysis of the Seyfert 1 galaxy GRS 1734-292

    We discuss the broadband X-ray spectrum of GRS 1734-292 obtained from non-simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations, performed in 2009 and 2014, respectively. GRS1734-292 is a Seyfert 1 galaxy, located near the Galactic plane at z=0.0214z=0.0214. The NuSTAR spectrum (3803-80 keV) is dominated by a primary power-law continuum with Γ=1.65±0.05\Gamma=1.65 \pm 0.05 and a high-energy cutoff Ec=538+11E_c=53^{+11}_{-8} keV, one of the lowest measured by NuSTAR in a Seyfert galaxy. Comptonization models show a temperature of the coronal plasma of kTe=11.90.9+1.2kT_e=11.9^{+1.2}_{-0.9} keV and an optical depth, assuming a slab geometry, τ=2.980.19+0.16\tau=2.98^{+0.16}_{-0.19} or a similar temperature and τ=6.70.4+0.3\tau=6.7^{+0.3}_{-0.4} assuming a spherical geometry. The 2009 XMM-Newton spectrum is well described by a flatter intrinsic continuum (Γ=1.470.03+0.07\Gamma=1.47^{+0.07}_{-0.03}) and one absorption line due to Fe\textsc{XXV} Kα\alpha produced by a warm absorber. Both data sets show a modest iron Kα\alpha emission line at 6.46.4 keV and the associated Compton reflection, due to reprocessing from neutral circumnuclear material

    Enhanced cerebral blood volume under normobaric hyperoxia in the J20-hAPP mouse model of Alzheimer’s disease

    Early impairments to neurovascular coupling have been proposed to be a key pathogenic factor in the onset and progression of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Studies have shown impaired neurovascular function in several mouse models of AD, including the J20-hAPP mouse. In this study, we aimed to investigate early neurovascular changes using wild-type (WT) controls and J20-hAPP mice at 6 months of age, by measuring cerebral haemodynamics and neural activity to physiological sensory stimulations. A thinned cranial window was prepared to allow access to cortical vasculature and imaged using 2D-optical imaging spectroscopy (2D-OIS). After chronic imaging sessions where the skull was intact, a terminal acute imaging session was performed where an electrode was inserted into the brain to record simultaneous neural activity. We found that cerebral haemodynamic changes were significantly enhanced in J20-hAPP mice compared with controls in response to physiological stimulations, potentially due to the significantly higher neural activity (hyperexcitability) seen in the J20-hAPP mice. Thus, neurovascular coupling remained preserved under a chronic imaging preparation. Further, under hyperoxia, the baseline blood volume and saturation of all vascular compartments in the brains of J20-hAPP mice were substantially enhanced compared to WT controls, but this effect disappeared under normoxic conditions. This study highlights novel findings not previously seen in the J20-hAPP mouse model, and may point towards a potential therapeutic strategy

    X-ray bolometric corrections for Compton-thick active galactic nuclei

    We present X-ray bolometric correction factors, κBol\kappa_{Bol} (LBol/LX\equiv L_{Bol}/L_X), for Compton-thick (CT) active galactic nuclei (AGN) with the aim of testing AGN torus models, probing orientation effects, and estimating the bolometric output of the most obscured AGN. We adopt bolometric luminosities, LBolL_{Bol}, from literature infrared (IR) torus modeling and compile published intrinsic 2--10 keV X-ray luminosities, LXL_{X}, from X-ray torus modeling of NuSTAR data. Our sample consists of 10 local CT AGN where both of these estimates are available. We test for systematic differences in κBol\kappa_{Bol} values produced when using two widely used IR torus models and two widely used X-ray torus models, finding consistency within the uncertainties. We find that the mean κBol\kappa_{Bol} of our sample in the range LBol10421045L_{Bol}\approx10^{42}-10^{45} erg/s is log10κBol=1.44±0.12_{10}\kappa_{Bol}=1.44\pm0.12 with an intrinsic scatter of 0.2\sim0.2 dex, and that our derived κBol\kappa_{Bol} values are consistent with previously established relationships between κBol\kappa_{Bol} and LBolL_{Bol} and κBol\kappa_{Bol} and Eddington ratio. We investigate if κBol\kappa_{Bol} is dependent on NHN_H by comparing our results on CT AGN to published results on less-obscured AGN, finding no significant dependence. Since many of our sample are megamaser AGN, known to be viewed edge-on, and furthermore under the assumptions of AGN unification whereby unobscured AGN are viewed face-on, our result implies that the X-ray emitting corona is not strongly anisotropic. Finally, we present κBol\kappa_{Bol} values for CT AGN identified in X-ray surveys as a function of their observed LXL_X, where an estimate of their intrinsic LXL_{X} is not available, and redshift, useful for estimating the bolometric output of the most obscured AGN across cosmic time.Comment: Accepted for publication in Ap
