The Municipality of Bistriţa – a potential model for surpassing urban risks and for the touristic capitalisation of its historic center. Situated on the trail of an important trade route, exploiting from an early age its rich natural surroundings, Bistriţa has developed as a typical Transylvanian city. Its historic center, built during the XIV-XVII centuries, compact and uniform, is a valuable urban and architectural heritage and was declared a protected architectural area. In time, especially during 1948-1990, a series of urban risks affected Bistriţa’s historic center, due to the carelessness and ignorance towards the past and the area’s identity, which are highlighted in this study. After 1990, a beneficial process of restoring this heritage began, along with the awareness and the sense of ownership of the local community regarding its value and along with its capitalisation through tourism

Research Regarding the Soil Characteristics and their Influence on Forest Productivity in the Mociar Forest, Mureş County

The Mociar Forest Reserve has a great scientific interest due to the age of the oaks ranging from 400-500 years, which is why it is included in the protected area category. Over time, a series of studies have been carried out on the occurrence of the oak drying phenomenon in the Mociar Forest in order to develop plans for measures to prevent and combat oak drying. The main reason for this was to analyze the physical and chemical properties of soils. Considering the direct influence of soil characteristics on the development of forest species within the Mociar Forest, we proposed the creation of nine soil profiles located in areas considered representative of the studied area and the identification of the main physical and chemical parameters in the laboratory stage (the soil pH, the nitrogen amount, the total humus and C:N ratio variation). According to the four factors analysed a GIS spatial analysis model has been developed in order to identify the favourability and soil restriction for forest species in the studied area. It was also sought to obtain an overall picture of the distribution of these parameters on their qualitative classes as well as on the distribution classes of specific, dominant forest species. This was made possible by the use of G.I.S. technology and specific geospatial interpolation and spatial analysis tools

The aim of this research was to identify the ecological factors which have influences on distribution, development and habitat suitability of the summer truffle (Tuber aestivum) in the Sub-Carpathian region of Transylvania. The ecological factors such as average annual temperature (°C), average annual precipitation (mm/year), the length of the bioactive period (months), land slope (grade), slope orientation, soil pH and its compaction level were analyzed having specific influences on forest vegetation development in Sub-Carpathian hills, and in the same time on the possibility of symbiosis existence between the trees and summer truffle. The most favorable regions from the Sub-Carpathians of Transylvania for summer truffle growth proved to be Dealurile Năsăudului and Homoroadelor Sub-Carpathians followed by Muscelele Năsăudului and hills of Bistrița, where the average annual temperature is between 6,8-11°C with an average annual precipitation of 900 mm/year, a 3-6 months long bioactive period and high humus content of the soil
