    Essential Oil Composition of Tanacetum parthenium from Eastern Black Sea Region, Turkey

    Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium L.), which belongs to the family Asteraceae, is a perennial herbaceous plant with small flowers like chamomile. In this study, we investigated the essential oil composition of Tanacetum parthenium collected from Gumushane Province, Turkey. Forty-four components representing 86.04% of the oil were identified in the essential oil of aerial parts of T. parthenium obtained by hydrodistillation and examined by GC and GC-MS. The main component of the sample was camphor (39.47%), followed by guaiol (5.21%), caryophyllene oxide (3.91%), bornyl acetate (3.09%), (E)-verbenol (2.68%), camphene (2.29%) and α-cadinol (2.12%). Presence of camphor highlighted the potential of this plant as a drug source in the alternative medicine due to its antiseptic, antipruritic, aphrodisiac, contraception and lactation suppressant effects. Guainol was found in this study for the first time in T. parthenium. In addition, other important finding was the lack of trans- chrysanthenyl acetate in our T. parthenium sample

    Crystal structure of cis-copper(II) complex with N-(di-n-propylcarbamothioyl)cyclohexanecarboxamide ligand

    Copper(II) complex, cis-[Cu(L-κ2S,O)2] of N-(di-n-propylcarbamothioyl)cyclohexane carboxamide ligands (HL) has been synthesized and structurally characterized by various spectroscopic techniques and single crystal X-ray diffraction crystallography. The cis-[Cu(L-κ2S,O)2], C28H50CuN4O2S2: Monoclinic, space group P21/n (no. 14), a = 10.025(2) Å, b = 21.724(4) Å, c = 14.848(3) Å, β = 100.60(3)°, Z = 4, Dcalc = 1.259 g/cm3, 22069 reflections measured (5.88° ≤ 2Θ ≤ 50.2°), 5639 unique (Rint = 0.0630, Rsigma = 0.0678) which were used in all calculations. The final R1 was 0.0488 (≥2σ(I)) and wR2 was 0.1277 (all data). Single crystal analysis revealed that a square-planar coordination geometry is formed around the copper atom by two sulphur and two oxygen atoms of the related ligand, which are in a cis configuration

    Thoracic Cavernoma with Intraosseous and Extradural Component Mimicking Metastasis: Case presentation

    Spinal epidural cavernomas are quite rare lesions and only 5% of all cavernomas are located in the spine. The lesions are most commonly localized in the thoracic region. The differential diagnosis includes neurogenic tumors, lymphoma, schwannoma, meningioma, multiple myeloma, Ewing's sarcoma and metastasis. A 40-year-old male patient presented with paraplegia and MR images revealed an epidural soft tissue constricting the right posterolateral of the cord at the T6 level. Pathology showed cavernous hemangioma. A literature search revealed no other case that so closely mimicked metastasis by invading all components of the thoracic vertebra and also expanding to the epidural distance.     A Case of Brucellosis with a Rare Complication: Pericarditis

    Objectives: To describe brucellosis and its possible complications according to clinical, laboratory and radiological findings. Methods: We describe a case of Brucella pericarditis visualized at transthoracic echocardiography with clinical manifestations. Results: Clinical manifestations, imaging and laboratory findings provided the correct diagnosis of Brucella pericarditis. The patient recovered fully following doxycycline and rifampin therapy. Conclusion: Brucellosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of disorders that affect the pericardium in endemic areas

    Monocyte-HDL Ratio: Can It Be Included in the Follow-Up of Diabetes Mellitus and Diagnosis of Diabetic Nephropathy?

    Background and Aim: Diabetic nephropathy is the most common cause of end-stage renal disease and albuminuria is the earliest manifestation of diabetic nephropathy.Oxidative stress and inflammation caused by advanced glyco-oxidation end products contribute to micro and macrovascular complications of diabetes. Monocyte to high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol ratio (MHR) is an essential indicator of inflammation and oxidative stress. In this study, we aimed to reveal the relationship between diabetes regulation and complications and MHR. Material and Method: A total of 182 subjects, including 152 patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) and 30 healthy controls, were included in this study. All data of the subjects were scanned retrospectively. The DM group was divided into two groups nephropathy (n=68) and non-nephropathy (n=84), with a limit of 30 mg/day for albuminuria. MHR was calculated by dividing the monocyte count by the HDL cholesterol count. Results: When patients with DM were divided into nephropathy and non-nephropathy, patients with nephropathy had higher MHR levels than the other group. We showed that MHR correlated with albuminuria, creatinine, and HbA1c in patients with diabetic nephropathy. In addition, in the regression analysis, albuminuria and MHR were predictors of DN, while MHR, age, and creatinine were found to be independent predictors of albuminuria. Conclusion: MHR, which is an easily calculated marker with simple laboratory tests, which is frequently requested in routine practice in the follow-up of diabetes patients, can help predict the regulation of diabetes and its kidney complications

    Disc Rehydration after Dynamic Stabilization: A Report of 59 Cases

    Study DesignA retrospective study investigating decrease in the nucleus pulposus signal intensity or disc height on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and disc degeneration.PurposeAlthough a degenerated disc cannot self-regenerate, distraction or stabilization may provide suitable conditions for rehydration and possible regeneration. This study aimed to evaluate clinical outcomes and disc regeneration via MRI in a series of patients with degenerative disc disease (DDD) who underwent lumbar stabilization with a dynamic stabilization system (DSS).Overview of LiteratureA dynamic system provides rehydration during early DDD.MethodsFifty-nine patients (mean age, 46.5 years) who undedwent stabilization with DSS for segmental instability (painful black disc) between 2004 and 2014 were retrospectively evaluated. All patients underwent MRI preoperatively and 12 months postoperatively. Intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration grades at the implanted segment were categorized using the Pfirrmann classification system. Patients were followed for a mean of 6.4 years, and clinical outcomes were based on visual analog scale (VAS) and Oswestry disability index (ODI) scores.ResultsSignificant improvements in back pain VAS and ODI scores from before surgery (7 and 68%, respectively) were reported at 6 (2.85 and 27.4%, respectively) and 12 months postoperatively (1.8 and 16.3%, respectively). Postoperative IVD changes were observed in 28 patients. Improvement was observed in 20 patients (34%), whereas progressive degeneration was observed in eight patients (13.5%). Thirty-one patients (52.5%) exhibited neither improvement nor progression. Single Pfirrmann grade improvements were observed in 29% of the patients and two-grade improvements were observed in 5%.ConclusionsOur observations support the theory that physiological movement and a balanced load distribution are necessary for disc regeneration. We conclude that DSS may decelerate the degeneration process and appears to facilitate regeneration
