Projected risks associated with heat stress in the UK Climate Projections (UKCP18)
Summer heat extremes in the UK pose a risk to health (amongst other sectors) and this is exacerbated by localised socio-economic factors that contribute to vulnerability. Here, regional climate model simulations from the UK Climate Projections are used to assess how different elements of extreme heat will vary across the UK in the future under global mean surface temperature warming levels of +1.5 °C, +2.0 °C and +3.0 °C above pre-industrial. Heat stress metrics incorporating daily maximum and minimum temperature, temperature variability and vapour pressure are included. These show qualitatively similar spatial patterns for the recent past, with the most pronounced heat hazards found in south-eastern regions of the UK. Projected heat hazard changes across the UK are not homogeneous, with southern regions (e.g. Greater London, South East) showing greater increases in maximum temperatures and northern regions (e.g. Scotland and Northern Ireland) showing greater increases in humidity. With +3.0 °C warming, the relative change in combined heat hazards is found to be greatest in the south-western UK, however, in absolute terms, south-eastern regions will still experience the greatest hazards. When combined with socio-economic factors, hotspots of high heat stress risk emerge in parts of London, the Midlands and eastern England along with southern and eastern coastal regions. Weighting of different heat risk factors is subjective and to this end we have developed and made available an interactive app which allows users to assess sensitivities and uncertainties in the projected UK heat risk
Redefining the role of urban studies Early Career Academics in the post-COVID-19 university
We are an international collective of Early Career Academics (ECAs) who met throughout 2020 to explore the implications of COVID-19 on precarious academics. With this intervention, our aims are to voice commonly shared experiences and concerns and to reflect on the extent to which the pandemic offers opportunities to redefine Higher Education and research institutions, in a context of ongoing precarity and funding cuts. Specifically, we explore avenues to build solidarity across institutions and geographies, to ensure that the conduct of urban research, and support offered to ECAs, allows for more inclusivity, diversity, security and equitability. *The Urban ECA Collective emerged from a workshop series described in this article which intended to foster international solidarity among self-defined early career academics working within urban research.ITESO, A.C

Pain neuroimaging in humans: a primer for beginners and non-imagers
The field of human pain neuroimaging has exploded in the last two decades. During this time, the broader neuroimaging community has continued to investigate and refine methods. Another key to progress is exchange with clinicians and pain scientists working with other model systems and approaches. These collaborative efforts require that non-imagers be able to evaluate and assess the evidence provided in these papers. Likewise, new trainees must design rigorous and reliable pain imaging experiments. Here, we provide a guideline for designing, reading, evaluating, analyzing, and reporting results of a pain neuroimaging experiment, with a focus on functional and structural MRI. We focus in particular on considerations that are unique to neuroimaging studies of pain in humans, including study design and analysis, inferences that can be drawn from these studies, and the strengths and limitations of the approach. This article provides an overview of the concepts and considerations of structural and functional MRI neuroimaging studies. The primer is written for those who are not familiar with brain imaging.
