Harvest and identification of peeler crabs
Peeler crabs are simply hard shell blue crabs (Callinectes sapidus) that show signs of molting.
The molting process, commercially called shedding, is when the hard shell is cast off and the new soft shell
emerges. In the soft condition, the shell expands to a larger size before rehardening. Peeler crabs is the term
given to blue crabs that are in a pre-molt stage. Identification of pre-molt crabs is the key to the success of soft
shell crab operations since prolonged time in a shedding facility increass the chance of mortality, requires
feeding, decreases water quality and increases operating costs. (2pp.

Free Parking? Evaluating the Impacts of the Downtown Eugene On-Street Parking Program on Retail Establishments
Examining committee: Robert Parker, chair, Jeff PetryWith oneâthird of the average downtown dedicated to parking, the issue of how to store the
private automobile plays a dominant role in public policy decisions. Several studies indicate that
a well thought out onâstreet parking policy can positively influence economic development in an
urban core. In an effort to improve patron perception of downtown and increase retail activity,
the City of Eugene implemented a free twoâhour parking program in its downtown core. I use a
survey completed by 63 downtown business owners and a series of onâstreet parking counts to
assess whether the program has succeeded in increasing retail activity and to inform a series of
recommendations to the City. Although daily onâstreet occupancy rates are greater than before
the program and the free parking seems to be preferred by the business community, I question
its to capacity to facilitate a sustained increase in patronage in downtown Eugene
Studies on the use of sulfites to control shrimp melanosis (Blackspot) (Presented at the 11th Annual Meeting of the Tropical and Subtropical Fisheries Technological Conference of the Americas, January 14, 1986, Tampa, Florida)
Shrimp melanosis, commonly known as 'blackspot' is a
harmless but objectionable surface dicoloration caused by
polyphenoloxidase enzyme systems which remain active during
refrigeration or ice storage. In the early 1950's sulfiting
agents, particularily sodium bisulfite was first introduced to prevent or inhibit melanosis, thus yielding a more valuable harvest (1). Such use of sulfites was 'prior sanctioned1 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1956 (2). More recent FDA decisions reaffirmed this practice, (3) but continuing regulatory scrutiny could restrict or eliminate the application of sulfite on shrimp. The regulatory action is prompted by an increasing concern for adverse 'allergic' reactions most common amongst hyper-(sulfite) sensitive asthmatics. Thus work was initiated to find alternatives to replace or reduce the amount of sulfites required to inhibit
shrimp melanosis. This work would screen for possible
alternatives which would require subsequent verification with field tests and statistical evaluations. (21pp.
Adverse Childhood Experiences, Familial Emotion Socialization, and Adult Emotion Regulation: A Moderation Model
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been associated with maladaptive outcomes, including difficulties with emotion regulation (ER). ER difficulties, in turn, increase risk for experiencing physical and mental health problems. Parental emotion socialization is one factor that has been associated with ER skills across development. No known studies, however, have examined whether parental emotion socialization moderates the relationship between ACEs and ER difficulties. In the current study, undergraduates (N = 678) completed questionnaires about their history of ACEs, parental emotion socialization experiences, and current ER difficulties. Correlational results indicated a positive correlation between ACEs and ER difficulties. Results of the hierarchical multiple regression analyses found a significant moderation effect only within the context of distress reaction (DR) parenting. Results suggested that the link between ACEs and adult ER difficulties was stronger in the context of low to moderate DR parenting and relatively weak in circumstances of high DR parenting
Potential utilization of scallop viscera for solid waste management and as feedstuff for swine
Waste management has been identified as a major problem
which will threaten the economic security of Florida's seafood
industry within the next ten years (1). One of the primary
concerns is treatment and disposal of solid wastes resulting from seafood processing.
Utilization of scallop viscera as silage, much like that
developed for waste fish and fish offal (3,4), could represent a practical solid waste treatment option which offers the additional benefit of a protein feed supplement for production of swine. (27pp.
