Storage, recall, and novelty detection of sequences by the hippocampus: Elaborating on the SOCRATIC model to account for normal and aberrant effects of dopamine
ABSTRACT: In order to understand how the molecular or cellular defects that underlie a disease of the nervous system lead to the observ-able symptoms, it is necessary to develop a large-scale neural model. Such a model must specify how specific molecular processes contribute to neuronal function, how neurons contribute to network function, and how networks interact to produce behavior. This is a challenging undertaking, but some limited progress has been made in understanding the memory functions of the hippocampus with this degree of detail. There is increas-ing evidence that the hippocampus has a special role in the learning of sequences and the linkage of specific memories to context. In the first part of this paper, we review a model (the SOCRATIC model) that describes how the dentate and CA3 hippocampal regions could store and recall memory sequences in context. A major line of evidence for sequence recall is the “phase precession ” of hippocampal place cells. In the second part of the paper, we review the evidence for theta-gamma phase coding
A Heterosynaptic Learning Rule for Neural Networks
In this article we intoduce a novel stochastic Hebb-like learning rule for
neural networks that is neurobiologically motivated. This learning rule
combines features of unsupervised (Hebbian) and supervised (reinforcement)
learning and is stochastic with respect to the selection of the time points
when a synapse is modified. Moreover, the learning rule does not only affect
the synapse between pre- and postsynaptic neuron, which is called homosynaptic
plasticity, but effects also further remote synapses of the pre- and
postsynaptic neuron. This more complex form of synaptic plasticity has recently
come under investigations in neurobiology and is called heterosynaptic
plasticity. We demonstrate that this learning rule is useful in training neural
networks by learning parity functions including the exclusive-or (XOR) mapping
in a multilayer feed-forward network. We find, that our stochastic learning
rule works well, even in the presence of noise. Importantly, the mean learning
time increases with the number of patterns to be learned polynomially,
indicating efficient learning.Comment: 19 page

LED down the rabbit hole: exploring the potential of global attention for biomedical multi-document summarisation
In this paper we report on our submission to the Multidocument Summarisation
for Literature Review (MSLR) shared task. Specifically, we adapt PRIMERA (Xiao
et al., 2022) to the biomedical domain by placing global attention on important
biomedical entities in several ways. We analyse the outputs of the 23 resulting
models, and report patterns in the results related to the presence of
additional global attention, number of training steps, and the input
configuration.Comment: SDP Workshop at COLING 202
Three in one : mesogenic aromatic acid as a liquid crystal matrix, a chiral dopant in liquid crystals and a stabilizer for nanoparticles
Studies of thermodynamics of the N*-I phase transitions and optical properties of the new liquid crystal - (R)-2-[4″-(trans-4-butylcyclohexyl)-2′-chloro-p-terphenyl-4-oxy] propanoic acid are carried out. The aim of these studies is to analyze the capabilities of that liquid crystal to simultaneously serve as a matrix for inorganic semiconductor nanoparticles (NP) as well as a chiral dopant for liquid crystals and a chiral ligand stabilizing the surface of CdSe NPs. The chiral doping of a nematic liquid crystal was proven by the measurements of selective transmittance of the visible light. The embedding of NPs in a nematic liquid crystal leads to the increase in TN⁎I, which is explained by the shape anisotropy of the NPs. The anisotropy of the ligand shell may result from the interaction between the ligand and LC matrix inducing the change of the spherical shape of the shell toward the ellipsoidal one. TN⁎I of the liquid crystal matrix of (R)-2-[4″-(trans-4-butylcyclohexyl)-2′-chloro-p-terphenyl-4-oxy] propanoic acid (R-MPA) decreases with the embedding of NPs stabilized by the same ligands, which is in a good agreement with prior experimental results and theory, but there exists a considerable quantitative difference

Beyond Hebb: Exclusive-OR and Biological Learning
A learning algorithm for multilayer neural networks based on biologically
plausible mechanisms is studied. Motivated by findings in experimental
neurobiology, we consider synaptic averaging in the induction of plasticity
changes, which happen on a slower time scale than firing dynamics. This
mechanism is shown to enable learning of the exclusive-OR (XOR) problem without
the aid of error back-propagation, as well as to increase robustness of
learning in the presence of noise.Comment: 4 pages RevTeX, 2 figures PostScript, revised versio
