Interoperable multimedia metadata through similarity-based semantic web service discovery
The increasing availability of multimedia (MM) resources, Web services as well as content, on the Web raises the need to automatically discover and process resources out of distributed repositories. However, the heterogeneity of applied metadata schemas and vocabularies – ranging from XML-based schemas such as MPEG-7 to formal knowledge representation approaches – raises interoperability problems. To enable MM metadata interoperability by means of automated similarity-computation, we propose a hybrid representation approach which combines symbolic MM metadata representations with a grounding in so-called Conceptual Spaces (CS). In that, we enable automatic computation of similarities across distinct metadata vocabularies and schemas in terms of spatial distances in shared CS. Moreover, such a vector-based approach is particularly well suited to represent MM metadata, given that a majority of MM parameters is provided in terms of quantified metrics. To prove the feasibility of our approach, we provide a prototypical implementation facilitating similarity-based discovery of publicly available MM services, aiming at federated MM content retrieval out of heterogeneous repositories
Long-term underwater camera surveillance for monitoring and analysis of fish populations
Long-term monitoring of the underwater environment is still labour intensive work. Using underwater surveillance cameras to monitor this environment has the potential advantage to make the task become less labour intensive. Also, the obtained data can be stored making the research reproducible. In this work, a system to analyse long-term underwater camera footage (more than 3 years of 12 hours a day underwater camera footage from 10 cameras) is described. This system uses video processing software to detect and recognise fish species. This footage is processed on supercomputers, which allow marine biologists to request automatic processing on these videos and afterwards analyse the results using a web-interface that allows them to display counts of fish species in the camera footage
Denotative and Connotative Semantics in Hypermedia: Proposal for a Semiotic-Aware Architecture
In this article we claim that the linguistic-centered view within hypermedia systems needs refinement through a semiotic-based approach before real interoperation between media can be achieved. We discuss the problems of visual signification for images and video in dynamic systems, in which users can access visual material in a non-linear fashion. We describe how semiotics can help overcome such problems, by allowing descriptions of the material on both denotative and connotative levels. Finally we propose an architecture for a dynamic semiotic-aware hypermedia system
An ecosystem for linked humanities data
The main promise of the digital humanities is the ability to perform scholar studies at a much broader scale, and in a much more reusable fashion. The key enabler for such studies is the availability of suciently well described data. For the eld of socio-economic history, data usually comes in a tabular form. Existing eorts to curate and publish datasets take a top-down approach and are focused on large collections. This paper presents QBer and the underlying structured data hub, which address the long tail of research data by catering for the needs of individual scholars. QBer allows researchers to publish their (small) datasets, link them to existing vocabularies and other datasets, and thereby contribute to a growing collection of interlinked datasets.We present QBer, and evaluate our rst results by showing how our system facilitates two use cases in socio-economic history
