Incipient sediment transport for non-cohesive landforms by the discrete element method (DEM)

    Get PDF
The determination of the shear stress at which a sediment grain of a given size and density starts to move has been treated with theoretical, experimental and numerical procedures by many authors. The seminal contribution of Shields [7] addresses a relationship for the non-dimensional critical shear stress in terms of the friction Reynolds number for a single particle in a flat bed. This work focusses on the incipient transport of particles for bedforms. The proposed numerical approach to the problem integrates the Discrete Element Method (DEM) [9] with a continuous finite element approximation. The DEM simulates the motion of the landform, defined as an aggregate of rigid discs that interact by contact and friction. The continuous finite element approach predicts the boundary shear stress field coming from the fluid flow over the bed (for basic formulation, see [4] and reference therein). Both methods are coupled through the flow-particle force transmission using drag coefficients. While for single particles (or very simple sets of particles) incipient motion (and consequently, the threshold stress) is clearly defined, for complex forms the use of the concept of incipient transport becomes necessary, and critical shear stress is established in terms of a threshold sediment flux over the bed surface. We present a series of numerical experiments for single particles, showing good agreement with Shields curve for the whole range of Reynolds number. In this communication we show some of these results, in compare with the basic Shields curves for flat bed and single grains

Femoral Neck Stress Fracture in a Female Triathlete: Clinical Presentation and Management

    Get PDF
CASE HISTORY: A 31-year-old female triathlete developed R+ hip pain during a training run in preparation for a full Ironman. The athlete experienced an immediate onset of R+ anterior hip pain as she began to increase pace while running intervals. She stopped immediately and was unable to run or walk without R+ hip pain. The patient was referred to physical therapy. PHYSICAL EXAM: Initial examination in the outpatient physical therapy clinic revealed hip AROM within normal limits and PROM of the R+ limited in both flexion and internal rotation. Resisted strength testing revealed weakness and pain of R+ hip flexors. No neurological signs or symptoms with screening of the lumbar spine. Flexibility testing revealed significantly tight quadriceps and hamstrings bilaterally. Positive anterior hip impingement test bilaterally. Single leg stance revealed compensated trendelenburg sign bilaterally. Gait analysis revealed shortened stride length and decreased stance time on R+. First follow up examination revealed decreased anterior hip pain with posterior hip capsule mobilizations and decreased pain while running in anti-gravity treadmill with increased cadence. Second follow up examination revealed increased R+ hip pain with weight bearing activities and decreased R+ AROM and PROM secondary to pain. Decreased R+ pain reported with distraction and walking in anti-gravity treadmill. DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSES: 1. Hip Flexor Strain 2. Femoro-acetabular Impingement 3. Hip Labral Tear 4. Femoral Stress Fracture TESTS & RESULTS: Pelvis anterior-posterior and R+ Hip neutral and flexion anterior-posterior radiographs: Femoral heads and necks intact; Femoro-acetabular joint space preserved bilaterally; Bony pelvis intact and unremarkable; Hip MR without contrast; Minimally displaced anterosuperior labral tear present; Edema in R+ femoral neck region; Non-displaced fracture involving the medial margin of the femoral neck on R+ FINAL DIAGNOSIS: R+ femoral neck medial aspect non-displaced stress fracture with adjacent stress edema. DISCUSSION: Femoral neck stress fractures are often misdiagnosed as signs and symptoms can mimic those of more commonly seen disorders. Early consideration in the differential diagnosis of hip pain is required to avoid potential loss of training time and further injury. OUTCOME OF THE CASE: NWB for 6 weeks; Cleared to start WBAT at 6 week MD follow-up; referred to physical therapy after MRI at 3 months. RETURN TO ACTIVITY AND FURTHER FOLLOW-UP: Rehabilitation included hip mobility, LE strengthening, and plyometric progression. Ran 2 miles independently with minimal to no pain at 3.5 months and discharged with return to running program

Advertising has encountered an obstacle with the proliferation of platforms like Netflix and this has sparked a boost in product placement. Through a content analysis, this exploratory study examines the use of product placement in three of Netflix’s original series, to understand how it behaves on this platform. The results indicate that it is a settled formula, but that the type of location or the number of marks is determined by the plot. Likewise, the fact that the audience is not restricted to a specific country seems to favor the presence of global brands

Literacy difficulties 'self-perception in advertising students

In the last years, university professors have detected an increase in misspellings, even in degrees where proficiency in communication is essential. There is a need to analyse how writing and reading problems prevalence has enlarged, but also the reason why this has happened. This re-search starts from the assumption that in some countries students with literacy difficulties might be reaching the university without a proper diagnosis or support intervention. In the frame of Advertising studies, a creative career with requirements of high knowledge of oral and written communication, the study compares in Spain actual literacy problems diagnoses to literacy self-perception. It also explores the awareness and attitudes toward dyslexia through an online questionnaire. Results show, on one hand, a quantitative discrepancy between actual diagnosis and self-perception struggles. On the other hand, a qualitative discrepancy with those pupils with dyslexia diagnoses reporting lower punctuations in the literacy struggles than the rest. Finally, a practical discrepancy, as there is widespread theoretical knowledge about dyslexia that does not correspond to practical interventions for this problem. Causes and consequences of these discrepancies in communication students require further research

Incipient sediment transport for non-cohesive landforms by the discrete element method (DEM)

[EN] We introduce a numerical method for incipient sediment transport past bedforms. The approach is based on the discrete element method (DEM) [1], simulating the micro-mechanics of the landform as an aggregate of rigid spheres interacting by contact and friction. A continuous finite element approximation [2] predicts the boundary shear stress field due to the fluid flow, resulting in drag and lift forces acting over the particles. Numerical experiments verify the method by reproducing results by Shields [3] and other authors for the initiation of motion of a single grain. A series of experiments for sediments with varying compacity and constituting piles yields enhanced relationships between threshold shear stress and friction Reynolds number, to define incipient sediment transport criterion for flows over small-scale bed morphologies. This work was partially supported by the MICIIN Grants #BIA-2008-00522 and #BIA-2012-32918.Bravo, R.; Ortiz Rossini, P.; Pérez Aparicio, JL.
