Extended sensations on interactive telecommunication
Although computer science and telecommunications have evolved
from the 90’s to nowadays, the way people communicate each other through
electronic devices has stuck since the appearance of the videoconference. The
audiovisual interaction seems enough, but we think the sensation of presence
gets higher when we allow the person who we are talking to, taking part in our
environment using and enriching it. In that way, the interaction is improved
with new sensations which come from outside of our device. In this article, we
propose a communication service which provides not only videoconference, but
manages the smart environment where the interlocutor of the communication is,
allowing him to access to any device connected through domotic and/or
wireless network. The application is developed under the OSGi open
specification and it almost doesn’t imply any cost increase over the bandwidth
used during communication. Once explaining the technical foundations, its
diverse applications in ubiquitous meetings and on-line games will be

El desarrollo del proyecto Domoweb, cuyo
objetivo principal, es la creación de un entorno
domótico gestionado vía Web, nos ha permitido
acumular experiencia sobre las arquitecturas
orientadas a servicio, concretamente sobre la
plataforma basada en la especificación de OSGi e
implementada con software de fuentes abiertas.
En este artículo, comentamos las decisiones
tomadas durante el desarrollo del proyecto y
ampliamos la visión inicial hacia ámbitos de
computación ubicua más genéricos que el hogar
digital. Además, señalamos la necesidad de
integrar en la arquitectura propuesta, la gestión de
los Servicios Web, ampliando de ese modo las
capacidades del entorno y su funcionalidad
Smart Environment Vectorization : An Approach to Learning of User Lighting Preferences
The automation of smart environment systems is one of the
main goals of smart home researching. This paper focus on learning user
lighting preference, considering a working field like a standard office. A
review of the smart environment and devices setup is done, showing a
real configuration for test purposes. Suitable learning machine techniques
are exposed in order to learn these preferences, and suggest the actions
the smart environment should execute to satisfy the user preferences.
Learning machine techniques proposed are fed with a database, so a

Temperature regulation of a pilot-scale batch reaction system via explicit model predictive control
In this paper, the temperature of a pilot-scale batch reaction system is modeled towards the design of a controller based on the explicit model predictive control (EMPC) strategy. Some mathematical models are developed from experimental data to describe the system behavior. The simplest, yet reliable, model obtained is a (1,1,1)-order ARX polynomial model for which the mentioned EMPC controller has been designed. The resultant controller has a reduced mathematical complexity and, according to the successful results obtained in simulations, will be used directly on the real control system in a next stage of the entire experimental framework.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
A DNA damage repair gene-associated signature predicts responses of patients with advanced soft-tissue sarcoma to treatment with trabectedin
Predictive biomarkers of trabectedin represent an unmet need in advanced soft-tissue sarcomas (STS). DNA damage repair (DDR) genes, involved in homologous recombination or nucleotide excision repair, had been previously described as biomarkers of trabectedin resistance or sensitivity, respectively. The majority of these studies only focused on specific factors (ERCC1, ERCC5, and BRCA1) and did not evaluate several other DDR-related genes that could have a relevant role for trabectedin efficacy. In this retrospective translational study, 118 genes involved in DDR were evaluated to determine, by transcriptomics, a predictive gene signature of trabectedin efficacy. A six-gene predictive signature of trabectedin efficacy was built in a series of 139 tumor samples from patients with advanced STS. Patients in the high-risk gene signature group showed a significantly worse progression-free survival compared with patients in the low-risk group (2.1 vs 6.0 months, respectively). Differential gene expression analysis defined new potential predictive biomarkers of trabectedin sensitivity (PARP3 and CCNH) or resistance (DNAJB11 and PARP1). Our study identified a new gene signature that significantly predicts patients with higher probability to respond to treatment with trabectedin. Targeting some genes of this signature emerges as a potential strategy to enhance trabectedin efficacy.This study was funded by the Spanish Group for Research on Sarcoma (GEIS) and partially by PharmaMar. SEPAR Recommendations for COVID-19 Vaccination in Patients With Respiratory Diseases
[ES] La Sociedad Española de Neumología y Cirugía Torácica (SEPAR) ha elaborado este documento de recomendaciones sobre la vacuna para la COVID-19 en las enfermedades respiratorias, con el objetivo de ayudar al personal sanitario en la toma de decisiones sobre cómo actuar en la vacunación de estos pacientes.
Las recomendaciones han sido elaboradas por un grupo de expertos en la materia, tras la revisión de la literatura recopilada hasta el 7 de marzo del 2021, y de la información aportada por distintas sociedades científicas, agencias del medicamento y estrategias de organismos gubernamentales hasta esa fecha.
Podemos concluir que las vacunas para la COVID-19 no solo son seguras y eficaces, sino que, en aquellos pacientes vulnerables con enfermedades respiratorias crónicas, son prioritarias. Además, la implicación activa de los profesionales sanitarios que manejan estas patologías en la estrategia de vacunación es clave para lograr una buena adherencia y coberturas vacunales elevadas.[EN] The Spanish Society of Pneumonology and Thoracic Surgery (SEPAR) has elaborated this document of recommendations for COVID-19 vaccination in patients with respiratory diseases aimed to help healthcare personnel make decisions about how to act in case of COVID-19 vaccination in these patients.
The recommendations have been developed by a group of experts in this field after reviewing the materials published up to March 7, 2021, the information provided by different scientific societies, drug agencies and the strategies of the governmental bodies up to this date.
We can conclude that COVID-19 vaccines are not only safe and effective, but also prior in vulnerable patients with chronic respiratory diseases. In addition, an active involvement of healthcare professionals, who manage these diseases, in the vaccination strategy is the key to achieve good adherence and high vaccination coverage
Detection of cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers changes of Alzheimer’s disease using a cognitive stress test in persons with subjective cognitive decline and mild cognitive impairment
IntroductionTimely and accurate diagnosis of the earliest manifestations of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is critically important. Cognitive challenge tests such as the Loewenstein Acevedo Scales for Semantic Interference and Learning (LASSI-L) have shown favorable diagnostic properties in a number of previous investigations using amyloid or FDG PET. However, no studies have examined LASSI-L performance against cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers of AD, which can be affected before the distribution of fibrillar amyloid and other changes that can be observed in brain neuroimaging. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the relationship between LASSI-L scores and CSF biomarkers and the capacity of the cognitive challenge test to detect the presence of amyloid and tau deposition in patients with subjective cognitive decline and amnestic mild cognitive impairment (MCI).MethodsOne hundred and seventy-nine patients consulting for memory loss without functional impairment were enrolled. Patients were examined using comprehensive neuropsychological assessment, the LASSI-L, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers (Aβ1-42/Aβ1-40 and ptau181). Means comparisons, correlations, effect sizes, and ROC curves were calculated.ResultsLASSI-L scores were significantly associated with CSF biomarkers Aβ1-42/Aβ1-40 in patients diagnosed with MCI and subjective cognitive decline, especially those scores evaluating the capacity to recover from proactive semantic interference effects and delayed recall. A logistic regression model for the entire sample including LASSI-L and age showed an accuracy of 0.749 and an area under the curve of 0.785 to detect abnormal amyloid deposition.ConclusionOur study supports the biological validity of the LASSI-L and its semantic interference paradigm in the context of the early stages of AD. These findings emphasize the utility and the convenience of including sensitive cognitive challenge tests in the assessment of patients with suspicion of early stages of AD
Programa de formación complementaria para doctorandos: Aplicación de las nuevas tecnologías y redes sociales (FOCODO)
Este proyecto de innovación docente va dirigido específicamente a los alumnos de doctorado de las Facultades de Óptica y optometría y de Veterinaria de la Universidad Complutense. Pero también es
Desarrollar un programa de formación complementaria para los doctorandos en ciencias de la salud que les permita adquirir conocimiento y habilidades en áreas paralelas al ámbito en el que están realizando sus tesis doctorales.
El programa de formación tendrá 4 areas temáticas diferenciadas:
- Habilidades de comunicación (como escribir un artículo científico, como hacer presentaciones orales y en poster, como escribir un Proyecto científico, como trabajar en equipo, …)
- Conocimiento complementario a la tesis doctoral (estadística, metodología científica, lectura crítica de bibliografía, Buenas prácticas de laboratorio, buenas prácticas clínicas, …)
- Salidas profesionales durante y después de la tesis doctoral (Becas pre y postdoctorales, búsqueda de proyectos de investigación, como colaborar con otros grupos de investigación,…)
- Formación especifica en su área temática (técnicas de laboratorio, técnicas clínicas, revisiones bibliográficas,…)
Se generará material de tres tipos:
- Seminarios.- Son presentaciones de una hora de duración sobre temas específicos a los que se puede asistir en directo o poder ver grabado a través de YouTube. Estos seminarios serán impartidos por profesores e investigadores de los grupos de investigacion que hacen la propuesta además de contar con especialistas nacionales e internacionales
- Pildoras.- Videos cortos de no mas de 3 minutos que resuman los aspectos mas importantes de cada seminario que serán colgados en las pagina de los grupos de investigacion que se creen en las redes sociales. Estas píldoras serán grabadas utilizando herramientas de grabación habituales para videos en redes sociales (croma, focos, …)
- Summer/Winter School.- Curos de verano y/o invierno donde en dos-tres días intensivos se imparta formacion especifica en investigacion. En estos cursos participaran profesores y expertos internacionales y estará abierto para la matriculación de estudiantes no complutenses, tanto nacionales como internacionales.
Para llevar a cabo este programa se utilizarán varias herramientas:
- Plataformas digitales (YouTube) donde se colgarán los seminarios que se realicen.
- Redes sociales (Instagram, Twitter,…) donde se colgarán las píldoras que se realicen y además se harán reuniones en directo para debatir temas de alguna de las áreas propuestas anteriormente.
