One name, several (wo)men: reflections on Virginia Woolf's Orlando: a biography
Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e ExpressĂŁo. Programa de PĂłs-Graduação em Letras/InglĂȘs e Literatura Correspondente. This study discusses queer theory as regards the portrayal of Orlando in Virginia Woolf's novel, Orlando: A Biography. The character is first analyzed in light of the intersections between gender, race, class, and nation, and subsequently in terms of the poetic persona, understood from both liberal and radical perspectives. The findings show that the character can be understood to destabilize gender fixity in the construction of a poetic persona, which confirms the tentative hypothesis. Findings also show that there is a conflict in the novel as it presents at the same time a transgressive text and a normatizing subtext, a conflict that must be criticized for its implications in cultural studies regarding queer theories, gender studies, and emancipatory politics.

Learning Relatedness Measures for Entity Linking
Entity Linking is the task of detecting, in text documents, relevant mentions to entities of a given knowledge base. To this end, entity-linking algorithms use several signals and features extracted from the input text or from the knowl- edge base. The most important of such features is entity relatedness. Indeed, we argue that these algorithms benefit from maximizing the relatedness among the relevant enti- ties selected for annotation, since this minimizes errors in disambiguating entity-linking.
The definition of an eâ”ective relatedness function is thus a crucial point in any entity-linking algorithm. In this paper we address the problem of learning high-quality entity relatedness functions. First, we formalize the problem of learning entity relatedness as a learning-to-rank problem. We propose a methodology to create reference datasets on the basis of manually annotated data. Finally, we show that our machine-learned entity relatedness function performs better than other relatedness functions previously proposed, and, more importantly, improves the overall performance of dif- ferent state-of-the-art entity-linking algorithms
That the Worst Shooting in US History Took Place in a Gay Bar Is Unsurprising
The selection of Pulse, a gay Orlando nightclub, as the site for a murderous homophobic rampage makes the killerâs crime a special outrage in view of the role that nightclubs have played in this nationâs LGBTQ history. Like many popular LGTBQ clubs, Pulse serves not only as a welcoming place to party, but also as a community partner, hosting a variety of social and educational events including, for example, Breast Cancer Awareness and HIV/AIDS prevention. According to its website, Pulse Orlando serves as âa driving force within the GLBT communityâ and strives to âto make strides towards equality awareness, and love for all.â Nightclubs have been some of the most potent sites of identity, organization, and power in the long history of LGBTQ Americans
Virginia Woolf and Victoria Sackville-West: Orlando as a reflection of their relationship
Virginia Woolf belongs to one of the most significant and original writers of the twentieth century. She was known for her feministic attitudes and denial of traditional gender roles as the social construct. She often criticized the unequal position of women in the patriarchal society and its homophobic tendencies. She used experimental approaches towards literature and writing such as so-called "stream of consciousness" in a form of inner monologue, thus she became the leading figure of the modernistic movement in Britain. The theoretical part of this paper deals with the person of Virginia Woolf as a writer and an intellectual. Her opinions about feminism, gender and androgyny are compared with the general atmosphere of the early twentieth century society. Further, the paper describes the relationship between Virginia Woolf and Victoria Sackville-West which was the impulse for writing the novel Orlando (1928). This novel was inspired by Sackville-West and the story of her life and partially reflected their relationship. The last chapter deals with the novel Orlando itself and how it reflects not only the affinity between Woolf and Sackville-West, but also Virginia Woolf's own thoughts and viewpoints concerning the ambiguity and complexity of gender and other topics such as artistic creativity, inspiration, importance of fame and meaning of human life in general.TeoretickĂĄ ÄĂĄst tĂ©to prĂĄce se zamÄĆuje na postavu Virginie Woolf jako spisovatelky a intelektuĂĄlky.
