    An omnidirectional retroreflector based on the transmutation of dielectric singularities

    In the field of transformation optics, metamaterials mimic the effect of coordinate transformations on electromagnetic waves, creating the illusion that the waves are propagating through a virtual space. Transforming space by appropriately designed materials makes devices possible that have been deemed impossible. In particular, transformation optics has led to the demonstration of invisibility cloaking for microwaves, surface plasmons and infrared light. Here we report the achievement of another "impossible task". We implement, for microwaves, a device that would normally require a dielectric singularity, an infinity in the refractive index. We transmute a singularity in virtual space into a mere topological defect in a real metamaterial. In particular, we demonstrate an omnidirectional retroreflector, a device for faithfully reflecting images and for creating high visibility, from all directions.     The government policy regarding sea tolls is to navigate goods transportation, guarantee the availability of goods, reduce price disparities, and ensure the continuity of goods transportation services to underdeveloped, remote, and border areas. Maritime transportation development policies are directed at increasing the role of the national shipping fleet, both domestic and export-import by applying the cabotage principle; eliminating illegal levies at ports through improved coordination for all agencies related to the loading and unloading process and meeting international shipping standards and the implementation of International Ship and Port Security; restructuring the shipping legislation and its implementation, as well as institutions in the marine transportation sub-sector in order to create conditions that are capable of attracting private interest in the development of marine transportation infrastructure. Sea transportation policy is defined as the lifeblood of increasing national development for the smooth flow of people, goods and information. This policy supports the optimal allocation of economic resources, so that sea transportation services are fairly evenly available and affordable for the people’s purchasing power.     Identification and functional characterization of an N-terminal oligomerization domain for polycystin-2*

    Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), the most common inherited cause of kidney failure, is caused by mutations in either PKD1 (85%) or PKD2 (15%). The PKD2 protein, polycystin-2 (PC2 or TRPP2), is a member of the transient receptor potential (TRP) superfamily and functions as a non-selective calcium channel. PC2 has been found to form oligomers in native tissues suggesting that it may form functional homo- or heterotetramers with other subunits, similar to other TRP channels. Our experiments unexpectedly revealed that PC2 mutant proteins lacking the known C-terminal dimerization domain were still able to form oligomers and co-immunoprecipitate full-length PC2, implying the possible existence of a proximal dimerization domain. Using yeast two-hybrid and biochemical assays, we have mapped an alternative dimerization domain to the N terminus of PC2 (NT2-1-223, L224X). Functional characterization of this domain demonstrated that it was sufficient to induce cyst formation in zebrafish embryos and inhibit PC2 surface currents in mIMCD3 cells probably by a dominant-negative mechanism. In summary, we propose a model for PC2 assembly as a functional tetramer which depends on both C- and N-terminal dimerization domains. These results have significant implications for our understanding of PC2 function and disease pathogenesis in ADPKD and provide a new strategy for studying PC2 function

    Relationship of fibroblast growth factor 21 with the prevalence and progression of vascular and valvular calcification: Multi-ethnic study of atherosclerosis

    Background: Elevated circulating levels of fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) are associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD). Therefore, we investigated the relationship of plasma FGF21 with calcification at different vascular and valvular sites. Methods: A total of 5786 participants, free of clinically apparent CVD at baseline and with valid data on plasma FGF21 and calcification (Agatston score, volume and density) at coronary arteries, thoracic arteries, mitral and aortic valves, and aortic valve ring, were included in the analysis. Vascular calcification was measured at 2–3 follow-up visits. Results: At baseline, higher FGF21 levels were associated with prevalent descending thoracic aortic calcification (DTAC) (prevalence ratio = 1.06 [95% CI 1.01–1.11] per SD increase in log-transformed unit, P = 0.016). Among participants without prevalent calcification, higher FGF21 levels were associated with incident DTAC (relative risk [RR] = 1.13 [95% CI 1.04–1.22], P = 0.002). Among all participants, higher FGF21 levels were also associated with the progression of DTAC score and volume (RR = 1.07 [95% CI 1.03–1.12] and 1.08 [95% CI 1.03–1.12] respectively, both P < 0.01). No significant association of FGF21 was found for prevalence (prevalence ratio = 0.89–1.05), incidence (RR = 0.97–1.16) and progression of calcification (RR = 0.94–1.14) at the other sites. Conclusion: Higher FGF21 levels were associated with the presence, incidence and progression of DTAC. However, the magnitude of this association was similar to those of the non-significant associations of FGF21 levels with calcifications at other sites. Further research is needed to assess the potential of FGF21 as a biomarker for vascular calcification
