    The objective of this research aimed to know about environment conservation in connection with the educational program of population and environment (PKLH) in elementary school (SD), in which or especially located around the Tondano lake, Minahasa, North Sulawesi. The qualitative-descriptive approach was conducted on, during February 2014 at 8 schools. Its focused to headmasters, teachers, students, and then continued by observation of schools and its environment. By using interview and participant-observation techniques, researcher take an active role on the learning activities and direct interaction with students in the classroom. After that continuing to search and observing students activities after and out school. The result of this research shows that PKLH was conducted in SD by using integrative approach, and we find that students get more information and knowledge and have an attitude and proper behavior rationally and responsibly according to their ability and educational level

    Strongly Coupled Matter-Field and Non-Analytic Decay Rate of Dipole Molecules in a Waveguide

    The decay rate \gam of an excited dipole molecule inside a waveguide is evaluated for the strongly coupled matter-field case near a cutoff frequency \ome_c without using perturbation analysis. Due to the singularity in the density of photon states at the cutoff frequency, we find that \gam depends non-analytically on the coupling constant ⋙\ggg as ⋙4/3\ggg^{4/3}. In contrast to the ordinary evaluation of \gam which relies on the Fermi golden rule (itself based on perturbation analysis), \gam has an upper bound and does not diverge at \ome_c even if we assume perfect conductance in the waveguide walls. As a result, again in contrast to the statement found in the literature, the speed of emitted light from the molecule does not vanish at \ome_c and is proportional to c⋙2/3c\ggg^{2/3} which is on the order of 103∼10410^3 \sim 10^4 m/s for typical dipole molecules.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure

    Field-Tuning of the electron and hole populations in the ruthenate Bi_3Ru_3O_11

    Experiments on the Hall coefficient R_H and heat capactity C reveal an unusual, compensated electronic ground state in the ruthenate Bi_3Ru_3O_11. At low temperature T, R_H decreases linearly with magnetic field |H| for fields larger than the field scale set by the Zeeman energy. The results suggest that the electron and hole populations are tuned by H in opposite directions via coupling of the spins to the field. As T is decreased below 5 K, the curve C(T)/T vs. T^2 shows an anomalous flattening consistent with a rapidly growing Sommerfeld parameter \gamma(T).     Operation of the Astronomical Radio Interferometric Earth Surveying (ARIES) in a proof of concept mode is discussed. Accuracy demonstrations over a short baseline, a 180 km baseline, and a 380 km baseline are documented. Use of ARIES in the Sea Slope Experiment of the National Geodetic Survey to study the apparent differences between oceanographic and geodetic leveling determinations of the sea surface along the Pacific Coast is described. Intergration of the NAVSTAR Global Positioning System and a concept called SERIES (Satellite Emission Radio Interferometric Earth Surveying) is briefly reviewed

    Charge and spin Hall effect in graphene with magnetic impurities

    We point out the existence of finite charge and spin Hall conductivities of graphene in the presence of a spin orbit interaction (SOI) and localized magnetic impurities. The SOI in graphene results in different transverse forces on the two spin channels yielding the spin Hall current. The magnetic scatterers act as spin-dependent barriers, and in combination with the SOI effect lead to a charge imbalance at the boundaries. As indicated here, the charge and spin Hall effects should be observable in graphene by changing the chemical potential close to the gap.Comment: 7 page

    A novel school-based intervention to improve nutrition knowledge in children: cluster randomised controlled trial.

    BACKGROUND: Improving nutrition knowledge among children may help them to make healthier food choices. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness and acceptability of a novel educational intervention to increase nutrition knowledge among primary school children. METHODS: We developed a card game 'Top Grub' and a 'healthy eating' curriculum for use in primary schools. Thirty-eight state primary schools comprising 2519 children in years 5 and 6 (aged 9-11 years) were recruited in a pragmatic cluster randomised controlled trial. The main outcome measures were change in nutrition knowledge scores, attitudes to healthy eating and acceptability of the intervention by children and teachers. RESULTS: Twelve intervention and 13 control schools (comprising 1133 children) completed the trial. The main reason for non-completion was time pressure of the school curriculum. Mean total nutrition knowledge score increased by 1.1 in intervention (baseline to follow-up: 28.3 to 29.2) and 0.3 in control schools (27.3 to 27.6). Total nutrition knowledge score at follow-up, adjusted for baseline score, deprivation, and school size, was higher in intervention than in control schools (mean difference = 1.1; 95% CI: 0.05 to 2.16; p = 0.042). At follow-up, more children in the intervention schools said they 'are currently eating a healthy diet' (39.6%) or 'would try to eat a healthy diet' (35.7%) than in control schools (34.4% and 31.7% respectively; chi-square test p < 0.001). Most children (75.5%) enjoyed playing the game and teachers considered it a useful resource. CONCLUSIONS: The 'Top Grub' card game facilitated the enjoyable delivery of nutrition education in a sample of UK primary school age children.     Transgenesis and Genomics in Molecular Breeding of Forage Plants

    Forage plant breeding has been largely based on phenotypic selection following sexual recombination of natural genetic variation found between and within ecotypes. Advances in plant genetic manipulation over the last 15 years have provided convincing evidence that these powerful technologies can complement and enhance plant breeding programs. Significant progress in the establishment of the methodologies required for the molecular breeding of forage plants has been made. Examples of current products and approaches for the application of these methodologies to forage grass and legume improvement are outlined. Large-scale genomic analysis of many organisms is under way with human, arabidopsis and rice genome sequences almost completed. Forage plant breeding is just now entering the genome era. The plethora of new technologies and tools now available for high-throughput gene discovery and genome-wide gene expression analysis have opened up opportunities for innovative applications in the identification, functional characterisation and use of genes of value in forage production systems and beyond. Examples of these opportunities, such as ‘molecular phenotyping’, ‘symbio-genomics’ and ‘xeno-genomics’ are introduced

    Serum Phthalate and Triclosan Levels Have Opposing Associations With Risk Factors for Gestational Diabetes Mellitus.

    Certain phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA) have been associated with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes in non-pregnant adults, but studies of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) have reported conflicting results for phthalates and no associations with BPA. Our aim was to investigate the relationship between maternal serum levels of phthalate metabolites and phenols at 10-17 weeks of gestation and glucose homeostasis at 28 weeks of gestation. 232 women aged ≥16 years without type 1 or 2 diabetes with singleton male pregnancies were recruited from a single UK maternity centre between 2001 and 2009 as part of a prospective observational study (Cambridge Baby Growth Study). Serum levels of 16 phthalate metabolites and 9 phenols (including BPA) were measured using liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry. Oral glucose tolerance tests were performed at 28 weeks. 47/232 (20.3%) women had GDM. First-trimester triclosan (TCS) was inversely associated with incident GDM (adjusted odds ratio per log increase in concentration 0.54, 95% confidence interval 0.34-0.86, p = 0.010). Amongst women without GDM, first-trimester mono-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate and mono(carboxyisooctyl) phthalate levels were positively associated with 120-min plasma glucose (adjusted β 0.268 and 0.183, p = 0.0002 and 0.010, respectively) in mid-pregnancy. No other monotonic associations were detected between phthalate or phenol levels and fasting or stimulated plasma glucose, β-cell function, insulin resistance, or 60-min disposition index. Our results support a glycaemia-raising effect of phthalates during pregnancy, consistent with findings in non-pregnant populations and suggest a possible protective effect of exposure to TCS against GDM
