Doing it differently: Engaging interview participants with imaginative variation
Imaginative variation was identified by Husserl (1936/1970) as a phenomenological technique for the purpose of elucidating the manner in which phenomena appear to consciousness. Briefly, by engaging in the phenomenological reduction and using imaginative variation, phenomenologists are able to describe the experience of consciousness, having stepped outside of the natural attitude through the epochē. Imaginative variation is a stage aimed at explicating the structures of experience, and is best described as a mental experiment. Features of the experience are imaginatively altered in order to view the phenomenon under investigation from varying perspectives. Husserl argued that this process will reveal the essences of an experience, as only those aspects that are invariant to the experience of the phenomenon will not be able to change through the variation.
Often in qualitative research interviews, participants struggle to articulate or verbalise their experiences. The purpose of this article is to detail a radical and novel way of using imaginative variation with interview participants, by asking the participants to engage with imaginative variation, in order to produce a rich and insightful experiential account of a phenomenon. We will discuss how the first author successfully used imaginative variation in this way in her study of the erotic experience of bondage, discipline, dominance & submission, and sadism & masochism (BDSM), before considering the usefulness of this technique when applied to areas of study beyond sexuality
Empires and Percolation: Stochastic Merging of Adjacent Regions
We introduce a stochastic model in which adjacent planar regions merge
stochastically at some rate , and observe analogies with the
well-studied topics of mean-field coagulation and of bond percolation. Do
infinite regions appear in finite time? We give a simple condition on
for this {\em hegemony} property to hold, and another simple condition for it
to not hold, but there is a large gap between these conditions, which includes
the case . For this case, a non-rigorous analytic
argument and simulations suggest hegemony.Comment: 13 page
Probing the origin of VHE emission from M 87 with MWL observations in 2010
The large majority of extragalactic very high energy (VHE; E>100 GeV) sources
belongs to the class of active galactic nuclei (AGN), in particular the BL Lac
sub-class. AGNs are characterized by an extremely bright and compact emission
region, powered by a super-massive black hole (SMBH) and an accretion disk, and
relativistic outflows (jets) detected all across the electro-magnetic spectrum.
In BL Lac sources the jet axis is oriented close to the line of sight, giving
rise to a relativistic boosting of the emission. In radio galaxies, on the
other hand, the jet makes a larger angle to the line of sight allowing to
resolve the central core and the jet in great details. The giant radio galaxy M
87 with its proximity (1 6Mpc) and its very massive black hole ((3-6) x 10^9
M_solar) provides a unique laboratory to investigate VHE emission in such
objects and thereby probe particle acceleration to relativistic energies near
SMBH and in jets. M 87 has been established as a VHE emitter since 2005. The
VHE emission displays strong variability on time-scales as short as a day. It
has been subject of a large joint VHE and multi-wavelength (MWL) monitoring
campaign in 2008, where a rise in the 43 GHz VLBA radio emission of the
innermost region (core) was found to coincide with a flaring activity at VHE.
This had been interpreted as a strong indication that the VHE emission is
produced in the direct vicinity of the SMBH black hole. In 2010 again a flare
at VHE was detected triggering further MWL observations with the VLBA, Chandra,
and other instruments. At the same time M 87 was also observed with the
Fermi-LAT telescope at GeV energies and the European VLBI Network (EVN). In

An Explicit Framework for Interaction Nets
Interaction nets are a graphical formalism inspired by Linear Logic
proof-nets often used for studying higher order rewriting e.g. \Beta-reduction.
Traditional presentations of interaction nets are based on graph theory and
rely on elementary properties of graph theory. We give here a more explicit
presentation based on notions borrowed from Girard's Geometry of Interaction:
interaction nets are presented as partial permutations and a composition of
nets, the gluing, is derived from the execution formula. We then define
contexts and reduction as the context closure of rules. We prove strong
confluence of the reduction within our framework and show how interaction nets
can be viewed as the quotient of some generalized proof-nets
Changes in ponderal index and body mass index across childhood and their associations with fat mass and cardiovascular risk factors at age 15
Background: Little is known about whether associations between childhood adiposity and later adverse cardiovascular health outcomes are driven by tracking of overweight from childhood to adulthood and/or by vascular and metabolic changes from childhood overweight that persist into adulthood. Our objective is to characterise associations between trajectories of adiposity across childhood and a wide range of cardiovascular risk factors measured in adolescence, and explore the extent to which these are mediated by fat mass at age 15.
Methods and Findings: Using data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, we estimated individual trajectories of ponderal index (PI) from 0-2 years and BMI from 2-10 years using random-effects linear spline models (N = 4601). We explored associations between PI/BMI trajectories and DXA-determined total-body fat-mass and cardiovascular risk factors at 15 years (systolic and diastolic blood pressure, fasting LDL-and HDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, C-reactive protein, glucose, insulin) with and without adjustment for confounders. Changes in PI/BMI during all periods of infancy and childhood were associated with greater DXA-determined fat-mass at age 15. BMI changes in childhood, but not PI changes from 0-2 years, were associated with most cardiovascular risk factors in adolescence; associations tended to be strongest for BMI changes in later childhood (ages 8.5-10), and were largely mediated by fat mass at age 15.
Conclusion: Changes in PI/BMI from 0-10 years were associated with greater fat-mass at age 15. Greater increases in BMI from age 8.5-10 years are most strongly associated with cardiovascular risk factors at age 15, with much of these associations mediated by fat-mass at this age. We found little evidence supporting previous reports that rapid PI changes in infancy are associated with future cardiovascular risk. This study suggests that associations between early overweight and subsequent adverse cardiovascular health are largely due to overweight children tending to remain overweight
Memory function approach to the Hall constant in strongly correlated electron systems
The anomalous properties of the Hall constant in the normal state of
high- superconductors are investigated within the single-band Hubbard
model. We argue that the Mori theory is the appropriate formalism to address
the Hall constant, since it aims directly at resistivities rather than
conductivities. More specifically, the frequency dependent Hall constant
decomposes into its infinite frequency limit and a memory function
contribution. As a first step, both terms are calculated perturbatively in
and on an infinite dimensional lattice, where is the correlation strength.
If we allow to be of the order of twice the bare band width, the memory
function contribution causes the Hall constant to change sign as a function of

Articulatory Tradeoffs Reduce Acoustic Variability During American English /r/ Production
Acoustic and articulatory recordings reveal that speakers utilize systematic articulatory tradeoffs to maintain acoustic stability when producing the phoneme /r/. Distinct articulator configurations used to produce /r/ in various phonetic contexts show systematic tradeoffs between the cross-sectional areas of different vocal tract sections. Analysis of acoustic and articulatory variabilities reveals that these tradeoffs act to reduce acoustic variability, thus allowing large contextual variations in vocal tract shape; these contextual variations in turn apparently reduce the amount of articulatory movement required.
