In this paper, we examine the contents and values of Yorùbá idiomatic expressions that relate to the parts of the human body in social interactions with a view to establishing their communicative value in Yorùbá socio-cultural discourse. A few research efforts on proverbs and idiomatic expressions have studied the scope of their usage in Yorùbá music, the new mode of their usage in political arena and those that relate to Egungun among speakers of Yorùbá language. None, however, have examined the contents of the Yorùbá idiomatic expressions in relation to the parts of the human body. This, therefore, is the preoccupation of the study. Our data for this study comprised thirty purposively selected idioms in Yorùbá language which are used frequently, especially among the elders, in social interactions. The idioms were classified into three domains which captured roughly the major divisions of the human body. The three major parts altogether ensure, in scientific parlance, the homeostasis and viability of the human body. The paper adopted the Ethnography of Communication model as its theoretical framework. Results from the study showed that almost every part of the human body is capable of being used to construct profound and thought-provoking idiomatic expressions which can enhance poetic and rhetoric vigour as well as serve as cultural fillip meant to rekindle the flagging interest of the youths in Yorùbá culture so as to save the Yorùbá language from extinction

Structural equation model of project planning effectiveness

    No full text
Previous research studies investigating the impact of situational variables on project planning effectiveness have not examined how the situational variables work together to influence planning effectiveness. A structural equation model (SEM) has been developed for describing and quantifying the influence of situational factors in project environments and organizational characteristics of performing organizations on project planning effectiveness. The individual effects of directly-observable variables on the project planning process were evaluated using regression analysis. The SEM approach enables the modelling of multiple factors as latent not-directly-measurable variable sets, thus providing a theoretical insight into how individual influence factors work together to determine the effectiveness of project planning efforts. The project environment has a dominant significant influence on the potential effectiveness of project planning efforts. In contrast, the influence of organizational characteristics is relatively insignificant.Project management, project planning, planning effectiveness, structural equation modelling, Australia,

    Methodological issues in design-construction integration

A major contributory factor to poor project performance in the construction industry is known to be the lack of integration and coordination between the different disciplines involved in various stages of the procurement process. Attempts by researchers to address this problem have met with limited success, as they have focused mainly on adapting integration techniques originally developed for use in the manufacturing industry. There is therefore a need to develop a detailed understanding of the fundamental sciences that underpin the problem of integrating the procurement process across the construction project life cycle. Presents and discusses a research model for addressing major methodological issues in the analysis of design/construction relationships.<br /

A Critical Study Of Vehicle Sticker And Inscription Texts That Transport Group and Individual Identities in Nigeria

Previous studies have focused on vehicle sticker and inscription texts from a wide range of perspectives. They include the stylistic, linguistic and pragmatic analyses of vehicle inscriptions, the transmission of moral and cultural values of sticker texts across borders, vehicle writings as conveyors of humours, slang and witticism and inscription and sticker texts that construct social, political and economic vices that are prevalent in Nigeria. However, none have worked on individual and group identity sticker and inscription texts in relation to agitation, high-handedness, over-bearing manner and all forms of lawlessness in Nigeria. In this paper, we examine individual and group identity sticker and inscription texts that relate to agitation, high-handedness, over-bearing manner and all forms of lawlessness in Nigeria. The Ethnography of Communication forms the kernel of our theoretical framework. Our data include nine pieces of sticker and inscription texts that communicate the inherent identities of the different academic and professional organizations, the perception of the public about the organizations, information from some Nigerian dailies and captions of the popular EndSARS protests in 2020. We argue that group and individual texts on automobiles signal to the reading public a lot about the organizations which include agitation, high-handedness, over-bearing manner and other forms of lawlessness in Nigeria. The paper reveals that what is contained on the bodies of most of the organizations’ vehicles does not always reflect the activities of such organizations
