Say! Dis Is Grate Stuff : The Yellow Kid and the Birth of the American Comics
On 12 December 1992, before a gathering of the Syracuse University Library Associates, Professor Olson delivered the keynote address that marked the opening of the University Library\u27s Yellow Kid exhibition. The following is an edited transcript of Olson\u27s talk.
What happened nearly one hundred years ago to give birth to the American comics? Who can we thank for having a colorful Sunday comic section to read every week? My analysis ofthe birth of the American comic strip suggests that it occurred as a result of the interaction of three major factors: (I) the natural evolution of graphic humor, (2) quirks of American history, and (3) Richard Fenton Outcault. In what follows we shall take a brieflook at these factors and see how they contributed to the birth ofthe comic strip
Frequency of Resistance to Bacillus thuringiensis Toxin Cry1Ab in an Iowa Population of European Corn Borer (Lepidoptera: Crambidae)
The refuge plus high-dose strategy for resistance management assumes that the frequency of resistance alleles is low. We used an F2 screen to estimate the frequency of resistance to transgenic corn that produces Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner Cry1Ab toxin (Bt corn) in an Iowa population of European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hu¨ bner). We also proposed a modiÞcation to the statistical analysis of the F2 screen that extends its application for nonuniform prior distributions and for repeated sampling of a single population. Based on a sample of 188 isofemale lines derived from females caught at light traps during the 2nd ßight of 1997, we show with 95% conÞdence that the frequency of resistance to Bt corn was ,3.9 3 1023 in this Iowa population. These results provide weak evidence that the refuge plus high-dose strategy may be effective for managing resistance in O. nubilalis to Bt corn. Partial resistance to Cry1Ab toxin was found commonly. The 95% CI for the frequency of partial resistance were [8.231024, 9.431023] for the Iowa population. Variable costs of the method were $14.90 per isofemale line, which was a reduction of 25% compared with our initial estimate
Flight simulator with spaced visuals
A flight simulator arrangement wherein a conventional, movable base flight trainer is combined with a visual cue display surface spaced a predetermined distance from an eye position within the trainer. Thus, three degrees of motive freedom (roll, pitch and crab) are provided for a visual proprioceptive, and vestibular cue system by the trainer while the remaining geometric visual cue image alterations are developed by a video system. A geometric approach to computing runway image eliminates a need to electronically compute trigonometric functions, while utilization of a line generator and designated vanishing point at the video system raster permits facile development of the images of the longitudinal edges of the runway
Doubly Differential Final-State Momentum Distributions of the Ionization Products in Collision of Bare Ions with Hydrogen
In this paper recoil-ion production cross sections are presented differential in recoil-ion longitudinal momentum and electron emission angle in ionization of atomic and molecular hydrogen by bare ion projectiles. A new formulation for constructing these double differential distributions from the measured electron double differential cross sections is used. A novel feature is the separation of two different branches of the recoil-ion longitudinal momentum distribution corresponding to soft and hard collision mechanisms of ionization. The single differential distributions have also been derived. © 1996 The American Physical Society
Ionization Dynamics in Fast Ion-Atom Collisions. II. Final-State Momentum Distributions of the Ionization Products in Collisions of He with Bare Carbon Ions
We have used the energy and angular distributions of the low-energy electron emission cross sections from the preceding paper [Lokesh C. Tribedi et al., Phys. Rev. A 58, 3619 (1998)] to derive the doubly differential final-state longitudinal momentum distributions of the electrons, recoil ions, and projectiles in ion-atom ionization for [Formula Presented] The complementary nature of the electron spectroscopy and the recoil-ion momentum spectroscopy have been investigated using a formulation based on three-body kinematics to explore the ionization dynamics in detail. The influence of the three-body ionization as well as the binary-encounter processes on the recoil-ion (and projectile) longitudinal momentum distributions has been investigated. The separation of the soft- and hard-collision branches of recoil-ion distributions is an important feature of the present technique. The present method also allows one to determine cross sections for very large electron momenta. The single- differential distributions are also derived by numerical integration of the double-differential distributions. The first Born approximation, the continuum distorted wave eikonal initial state, and the classical trajectory Monte Carlo calculations are used to explain the data. © 1998 The American Physical Society
Characterization of radiolytically generated degradation products in the strip section of a TRUEX flowsheet
This report presents a summary of the work performed to meet the FCRD level 2 milestone M3FT-13IN0302053, “Identification of TRUEX Strip Degradation.” The INL radiolysis test loop has been used to identify radiolytically generated degradation products in the strip section of the TRUEX flowsheet. These data were used to evaluate impact of the formation of radiolytic degradation products in the strip section upon the efficacy of the TRUEX flowsheet for the recovery of trivalent actinides and lanthanides from acidic solution. The nominal composition of the TRUEX solvent used in this study is 0.2 M CMPO and 1.4 M TBP dissolved in n-dodecane and the nominal composition of the TRUEX strip solution is 1.5 M lactic acid and 0.050 M diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid. Gamma irradiation of a mixture of TRUEX process solvent and stripping solution in the test loop does not adversely impact flowsheet performance as measured by stripping americium ratios. The observed increase in americium stripping distribution ratios with increasing absorbed dose indicates the radiolytic production of organic soluble degradation compounds
