Searching for thermal signatures of persistent currents in normal metal rings

We introduce a calorimetric approach to probe persistent currents in normal metal rings. The heat capacity of a large ensemble of silver rings is measured by nanocalorimetry under a varying magnetic field at different temperatures (60 mK, 100 mK and 150 mK). Periodic oscillations versus magnetic field are detected in the phase signal of the temperature oscillations, though not in the amplitude (both of them directly linked to the heat capacity). The period of these oscillations ($\Phi_0/2$, with $\Phi_0 = h/e$ the magnetic flux quantum) and their evolution with temperature are in agreement with theoretical predictions. In contrast, the amplitude of the corresponding heat capacity oscillations (several $k_{\mathrm{B}}$) is two orders of magnitude larger than predicted by theory

Este trabalho explora contribuições da ficção à pesquisa qualitativa em comunicação organizacional. A vida concreta do trabalho em uma organização equilibra-se no limiar entre realidade e ficção, no sentido de que as atividades organizantes do trabalho estabelecem-se em arranjos temporários, transformadores e redefinidores de redes de relações entre narrativas. Esses arranjos justapõem versões do mundo e evidenciam intervalos a partir dos quais se produz um comum partilhado. Argumentamos também que o conhecimento oferecido pela ficção pode redefinir a maneira como nos aproximamos dos fenômenos organizacionais.Este trabajo busca explorar los aportes de la ficción a la investigación cualitativa en comunicación organizacional. La vida concreta del trabajo en una organización se equilibra en el umbral entre la realidad y la ficción, en el sentido de que las actividades organizadoras del trabajo se establecen en arreglos temporales, transformadores y redefinidores de redes de relaciones entre relatos. Estos arreglos yuxtaponen versiones del mundo y muestran intervalos a partir de los cuales se produce un común compartido. También se argumenta que el conocimiento que ofrece la ficción puede redefinir la forma en que abordamos los fenómenos organizacionales.This work explores some of the contributions of fiction to qualitative research on organizational communication. The concrete life of work in an organization is balanced on the liminal threshold between reality and fiction, in the sense that the organizing activities of work are established in temporary, transforming, and redefining arrangements of networks of relationshipsbetween narratives. These arrangements juxtapose versions of the world exposing the intervals where a shared common is produced. We also argue that the knowledge offered by fiction can redefine the way we approach organizational phenomena

Tackling "people remodelling" in corticosteroid-dependent asthma with type-2 targeting biologics and a formal corticosteroid weaning protocol

Abstract : People with severe corticosteroid-dependent asthma have greater morbidity, mortality and corticosteroid side effects than any other people with asthma. Just as type-2 inflammation and recurrent asthma attacks remodel airways, we propose the concept of ‘people remodelling’ to represent the utter disruption of people’s lives by the consequences of severe asthma and its associated corticosteroid treatments. To tackle this important problem, three biologics targeting type-2 inflammation – mepolizumab, benralizumab and dupilumab – have shown efficacy in tapering corticosteroids in dedicated phase III trials. We herein review the literature and propose an evidence-based, dose- and agent-specific corticosteroid weaning protocol for busy clinicians looking to achieve the best outcomes possible for their patients: independence from corticosteroids and reversal of people remodelling

Water quality and water-use conflicts in Lake Taabo (Ivory Coast)

The Lake Taabo (Ivory Coast, Africa) results of the construction of the Taabo dam on the Ban- dama River. The changes in the water level of the 69-km² lake depend on 1) the rainfall linked to alternating dry/wet seasons; 2) the extraction of water for human uses; 3) the discharge of water from the upstream dam and the volumes tur- bined by the Kossou dam; 4) the various an- thropic effects (discharge of untreated waste water from towns and industries, and leaching from agricultural land). The average concentra- tions of nutrients (NH4-N: 1.1 mg/L, NO3-N: 1.62 mg/L, PO4-P: 10 mg/L, SiO2: 15 mg/L) and chlo- rophyll a (from 4.8 to 16.5 μg/L, average 11.4 μg/L) indicates some degree of eutrophication. The cumulated effects that threaten the ecosys- tem (degradation of water quality and eutrophi- cation) are such that they are likely to interfere with various water uses. In a context of growing health and environmental concerns in Africa, this study demonstrates conflicts between dif- ferent uses of this water resource and the urgent need for an appropriate policy including specific monitoring of lake water quality, wastewater control, and a programme to reduce agricultural fertilizers
