A Conceptual Shift to Rectify a Defect in the Lorentz-Dirac Equation
In his analysis of the Classical Theory of Radiating Electrons, Dirac (1938)
draws attention to the characteristic instability of solutions to the third
order equation of motion. He remarks that changing the sign of the self-force
eliminates the runaway solutions and gives `reasonable behaviour'. Dirac
rejects such a change and proceeds with an ad hoc modification to the solutions
of the initial value problem that is not consistent with the principle of
causality. We argue that his reasons for rejecting the change of sign are
invalid on both physical and mathematical grounds.
The conceptual shift is to treat the physical particle as a composite of the
source particle and the energy-momentum that is reversibly generated in its
self-field by its motion. The reversibly generated energy in the self-field is
interpreted as kinetic energy, and the changes that follow result in Dirac's
change of sign. Several exact solutions to the new equation of motion and its
linearisation are given. For a particle in orbital motion the self-force
enables the applied force to generate radiation and kinetic energy in the
self-field that results in an outward spiral motion. The theory is consistent
with all well-established principles of physics, including the principle of
causality.Comment: 20 page
Fuels for Future Electric Power
OVER THE NEXT FORTY YEARS, THE U.S. WILL EXPERIENCE PROBLEMS BECAUSE OF DWINDLING SUPPLIES OF FOSSIL FUELS AND AN INCREASING DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL. SEVERAL ALTERNATIVES ARE AVAILABLE, SUCH AS MORE STRINGENT CONSERVATION MEASURES OR ALTERNATIVE SOURCES OF ENERGY. HOWEVER, NO SINGLE ALTERNATIVE WILL BE SUFFICIENT. A STUDY WAS CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE THE MOST EFFICIENT ALLOCATION POSSIBLE OF RESOURCES. THE ANALYSIS WAS CONDUCTED ON THE BASIS OF ASSUMED HAPPENINGS IN THE FUTURE RATHER THAN BY PROJECTING HISTORIC TRENDS INTO THE FUTURE. FOR EXAMPLE, AS ONE SOURCE OF ENERGY SUCH AS OIL BECOMES MORE SCARCE, THE COST WILL GO UP, INDUCING A CHANGE TO ANOTHER SOURCE. SYNTHETIC FUELS FROM COAL AND HYDROGEN FROM ELECTROLYSIS WILL BECOME MORE PRACTICAL BY THE END OF THE CENTURY. COAL AND OIL WILL BE USED. HEAVILY THIS CENTURY WITH NUCLEAR FUEL BECOMING MORE EFFICIENT EARLY IN THE NEXT CENTURY. CHART
On Constructing Persistent Identifiers with Persistent Resolution Targets
Persistent Identifiers (PID) are the foundation referencing digital assets in
scientific publications, books, and digital repositories. In its realization,
PIDs contain metadata and resolving targets in form of URLs that point to data
sets located on the network. In contrast to PIDs, the target URLs are typically
changing over time; thus, PIDs need continuous maintenance -- an effort that is
increasing tremendously with the advancement of e-Science and the advent of the
Internet-of-Things (IoT). Nowadays, billions of sensors and data sets are
subject of PID assignment. This paper presents a new approach of embedding
location independent targets into PIDs that allows the creation of
maintenance-free PIDs using content-centric network technology and overlay
networks. For proving the validity of the presented approach, the Handle PID
System is used in conjunction with Magnet Link access information encoding,
state-of-the-art decentralized data distribution with BitTorrent, and Named
Data Networking (NDN) as location-independent data access technology for
networks. Contrasting existing approaches, no green-field implementation of PID
or major modifications of the Handle System is required to enable
location-independent data dissemination with maintenance-free PIDs.Comment: Published IEEE paper of the FedCSIS 2016 (SoFAST-WS'16) conference,

On Lyapunov-Krasovskii Functionals for Switched Nonlinear Systems with Delay
We present a set of results concerning the existence of Lyapunov-Krasovskii
functionals for classes of nonlinear switched systems with time-delay. In
particular, we first present a result for positive systems that relaxes
conditions recently described in \cite{SunWang} for the existence of L-K
functionals. We also provide related conditions for positive coupled
differential-difference positive systems and for systems of neutral type that
are not necessarily positive. Finally, corresponding results for discrete-time
systems are described.Comment: 19 Page
Regulation of the \u3cem\u3eEscherichia coli\u3c/em\u3e Tryptophan Operon by Early Reactions in the Aromatic Pathway
7-Methyltryptophan (7MT) or compounds which can be metabolized to 7MT, 3-methylanthranilic acid (3MA) and 7-methylindole, cause derepression of the trp operon through feedback inhibition of anthranilate synthetase. Tyrosine reverses 3MA or 7-methylindole derepression, apparently by increasing the amount of chorismic acid available to the tryptophan pathway. A mutant isolated on the basis of 3MA resistance (MAR 13) was found to excrete small amounts of chorismic acid and to have a feedback-resistant phenylalanine 3-deoxy-d-arabinoheptulosonic acid-7-phosphate (DAHP) synthetase. Genetic evidence indicates that the mutation conferring 3MA resistance and feedback resistance is very closely linked to aroG, the structural gene for the DAHP synthetase (phe). Since feedback inhibition of anthranilate synthetase by l-tryptophan (or 7MT) is competitive with chorismic acid, alterations in growth conditions (added tyrosine) or in a mutant (MAR 13) which increase the amount of chorismic acid available to the tryptophan pathway result in resistance to 7MT derepression. Owing to this competitive nature of tryptophan feedback inhibition of anthranilate synthetase by chorismic acid, the early pathway apparently serves to exert a regulatory influence on tryptophan biosynthesis
Assessment in mathematics: A multimedia resource for preservice teachers
It is commonly accepted that teachers teach the way they were taught and that innovation is difficult to achieve. In this project, the theoretical framework of situated cognition or situated learning has been used to design an interactive multimedia resource that allows preservice teachers to become aware of different assessment strategies in mathematics education, and how to apply them. The resource enables users to encounter the authentic use of a range of assessment strategies and to view their interpretations from multiple perspectives which include the teacher's decision-making processes, the child's thinking, expert opinion and written documentation
