Characterization of the second- and third-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities of monolayer MoS using multiphoton microscopy
We report second- and third-harmonic generation in monolayer MoS
as a tool for imaging and accurately characterizing the material's nonlinear
optical properties under 1560 nm excitation. Using a surface nonlinear optics
treatment, we derive expressions relating experimental measurements to second-
and third-order nonlinear sheet susceptibility magnitudes, obtaining values of
m V and for the first time for
monolayer MoS, m V.
These sheet susceptibilities correspond to effective bulk nonlinear
susceptibility values of m V and
m V, accounting for the sheet
thickness. Experimental comparisons between MoS and graphene are
also performed, demonstrating 3.4 times stronger third-order sheet
nonlinearity in monolayer MoS, highlighting the material's
potential for nonlinear photonics in the telecommunications C band.Comment: Accepted by 2D Materials, 28th Oct 201
A Bit-String Model for Biological Aging
We present a simple model for biological aging. We studied it through
computer simulations and we have found this model to reflect some features of
real populations.Comment: LaTeX file, 4 PS figures include
FINITE SIZE SCALING FOR FIRST ORDER TRANSITIONS: POTTS MODEL
The finite-size scaling algorithm based on bulk and surface renormalization
of de Oliveira (1992) is tested on q-state Potts models in dimensions D = 2 and
3. Our Monte Carlo data clearly distinguish between first- and second-order
phase transitions. Continuous-q analytic calculations performed for small
lattices show a clear tendency of the magnetic exponent Y = D - beta/nu to
reach a plateau for increasing values of q, which is consistent with the
first-order transition value Y = D. Monte Carlo data confirm this trend.Comment: 5 pages, plain tex, 5 EPS figures, in file POTTS.UU (uufiles

Critical phenomena of collapsing massless scalar wave packets
An analytical model that represents the collapse of a massless scalar wave
packet with continuous self-similarity is constructed, and critical phenomena
are found. In the supercritical case, the mass of black holes is finite and has
the form , with .Comment: Latex file, including 2 figures, avalaible upon reques
The Stability of Quantum Concatenated Code Hamiltonians
Protecting quantum information from the detrimental effects of decoherence
and lack of precise quantum control is a central challenge that must be
overcome if a large robust quantum computer is to be constructed. The
traditional approach to achieving this is via active quantum error correction
using fault-tolerant techniques. An alternative to this approach is to engineer
strongly interacting many-body quantum systems that enact the quantum error
correction via the natural dynamics of these systems. Here we present a method
for achieving this based on the concept of concatenated quantum error
correcting codes. We define a class of Hamiltonians whose ground states are
concatenated quantum codes and whose energy landscape naturally causes quantum
error correction. We analyze these Hamiltonians for robustness and suggest
methods for implementing these highly unnatural Hamiltonians.Comment: 18 pages, small corrections and clarification
