PCR-based detection of Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina in their natural host Boophilus microplus and cattle.
PCR and nested-PCR methods were used to assess the frequency of Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina infection in Boophilus microplus engorged females and eggs and in cattle reared in an area with endemic babesiosis. Blood and the engorged female ticks were from 27 naturally infested calves and 25 crossbred cows. The frequency of both Babesia species was similar in calves and cows (P>0.05). Babesia bovis was detected in 23 (85.2%) calves and in 25 (100%) cows and B. bigemina was detected in 25 (92.6%) calves and in 21 (84%) cows. Mixed infections with the both Babesia species were identified in 42 animals, 21 in each age category. Of female ticks engorged on calves, 34.9% were negative and single species infection with B. bigemina (56.2%) was significantly more frequent (P0.05) to the frequency of single B. bigemina infection (15.9%). Mixed Babesia infection was lower (P<O.OI) than single species infection in female ticks engorged either in cows (5.7%) or in calves (4.3%). An egg sample from each female was analysed for the presence of Babesia species. Of the egg samples from female ticks infected with B. bovis, 26 (47.3%) were infected while from those from female ticks infected with B. bigemina 141 (76.6%) were infected (P<0.01). The results showed that although the frequency of both species of Babesia was similar in calves and cows, the infectivity of B. bigemina was higher to ticks fed on calves while to those ticks fed on cows the infectivity of both Babesia species was similar
An End-to-End Approach for Recognition of Modern and Historical Handwritten Numeral Strings
An end-to-end solution for handwritten numeral string recognition is
proposed, in which the numeral string is considered as composed of objects
automatically detected and recognized by a YoLo-based model. The main
contribution of this paper is to avoid heuristic-based methods for string
preprocessing and segmentation, the need for task-oriented classifiers, and
also the use of specific constraints related to the string length. A robust
experimental protocol based on several numeral string datasets, including one
composed of historical documents, has shown that the proposed method is a
feasible end-to-end solution for numeral string recognition. Besides, it
reduces the complexity of the string recognition task considerably since it
drops out classical steps, in special preprocessing, segmentation, and a set of
classifiers devoted to strings with a specific length
Searching High Redshift Large-Scale Structures: Photometry of Four Fields Around Quasar Pairs at z~1
We have studied the photometric properties of four fields around the
high-redshift quasar pairs QP1310+0007, QP1355-0032, QP0110-0219, and
QP0114-3140 at z ~ 1 with the aim of identifying large-scale structures- galaxy
clusters or groups- around them. This sample was observed with GMOS in Gemini
North and South telescopes in the g', r', i', and z' bands, and our photometry
is complete to a limiting magnitude of i' ~ 24 mag (corresponding to ~ M*_i' +
2 at the redshift of the pairs). Our analysis reveals that QP0110-0219 shows
very strong and QP1310+0007 and QP1355-0032 show some evidence for the presence
of rich galaxy clusters in direct vicinity of the pairs. On the other hand,
QP0114-3140 could be an isolated pair in a poor environment. This work suggest
that z ~ 1 quasar pairs are excellent tracers of high density environments and
this same technique may be useful to find clusters at higher redshifts.Comment: 29 pages, 7 figures, ApJ accepted. Added one figure and 3 references.

Gauging N=2 Supersymmetric Non-Linear -Models in the Atiyah-Ward Space-Time
We build up a class of N=2 supersymmetric non-linear -models in an
N=1 superspace based on the Atiyah-Ward space-time of (2+2)-signature metric.
We also discuss the gauging of isometries of the associated hyper-K\"ahlerian
target spaces and present the resulting gauge-covariant supersymmetric action
functional.Comment: 12 pages, latex, no figure
