Local structural analyses on molten terbium fluoride in lithium fluoride and lithiumâcalcium fluoride mixtures
X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements on terbium fluoride in molten lithium fluoride and in molten
lithiumâcalcium fluoride mixtures, (e.g. 0.20TbF3â0.80LiF, 0.20TbF3â0.62LiFâ0.18CaF2, 0.20TbF3â0.48LiFâ0.32CaF2, 0.50TbF3â0.50LiF, and 0.50TbF3â0.38LiFâ0.12CaF2), have been carried out. In the solid state, coordination number of terbium (Ni) and inter ionic distances between terbium and fluorine in the first neighbor (ri) are nearly constant in all mixtures. In 0.20TbF3â0.80LiF, 0.20TbF3â0.62LiFâ0.18CaF2 and 0.50TbF3â0.50LiF mixtures, Ni's decrease from ca. 8 to 6 and ri's also decrease from ca. 2.29 to 2.26 Ă
on melting. On the other hands, in molten 0.20TbF3â0.48LiFâ0.32CaF2 and 0.50TbF3â0.38LiFâ0.12CaF2 mixtures, Ni's are slightly larger than 6 and ri's do not change. These facts correspond to the amount of Fâ supplied by solvent melts, i.e. the effect of CaF2 becomes predominant at bCaF2 > 0.32 in ternary 0.20TbF3âaLiFâbCaF2 mixtures and at bCaF2 > 0.12 in ternary 0.50TbF3âaLiFâbCaF2 mixtures
Royal Jelly Prevents Osteoporosis in Rats: Beneficial Effects in Ovariectomy Model and in Bone Tissue Culture Model
Royal jelly (RJ) has been used worldwide for many years as medical products, health foods and cosmetics. Since RJ contains testosterone and has steroid hormone-type activities, we hypothesized that it may have beneficial effects on osteoporosis. We used both an ovariectomized rat model and a tissue culture model. Rats were divided into eight groups as follows: sham-operated (Sham), ovariectomized (OVX), OVX given 0.5% (w/w) raw RJ, OVX given 2.0% (w/w) RJ, OVX given 0.5% (w/w) protease-treated RJ (pRJ), OVX given 2.0% (w/w) pRJ, OVX given 17ÎČ-estradiol and OVX given its vehicle, respectively. The Ovariectomy decreased tibial bone mineral density (BMD) by 24%. Administration of 17ÎČ-estradiol to OVX rats recovered the tibial BMD decrease by 100%. Administration of 2.0% (w/w) RJ and 0.5â2.0% (w/w) pRJ to OVX rats recovered it by 85% or more. These results indicate that both RJ and pRJ are almost as effective as 17ÎČ-estradiol in preventing the development of bone loss induced by ovariectomy in rats. In tissue culture models, both RJ and pRJ increased calcium contents in femoral-diaphyseal and femoral-metaphyseal tissue cultures obtained from normal male rats. However, in a mouse marrow culture model, they neither inhibited the parathyroid hormone (PTH)-induced calcium loss nor affected the formation of osteoclast-like cells induced by PTH in mouse marrow culture system. Therefore, our results suggest that both RJ and pRJ may prevent osteoporosis by enhancing intestinal calcium absorption, but not by directly antagonizing the action of PTH
Superconducting Properties of Metastable bcc Solid Solution in Melt-quenched Zr-Ge Binary Alloys
Superconducting metastable bcc phase has been found in rapidly quenched Zr-Ge binary alloys in a composition range 9 to 12 at% Ge. With decreasing germanium content, the T_c value of the bcc alloys increased from 3.30 to 3.88 K, while the H_ gradient at T_c, -(dH_/dT)_, and the electrical resistivity at 4.2 K, Ï_n, decreased from 1.86Ă10^6 to 1.79Ă10^6 Am^ K^ and 2.00 to 1.70 ΌΩm, respectively. There existed a strong correlation between Ï_n, T_c and -(dH_/dT)_; with increasing Ï_n, T_c decreased and - (dH_/dT)_ increased. A correlation between the temperature coefficient of resistivity (TCR), 1/Ï_ (dÏ/dT) and T_c was also found ; the larger the TCR the higher is the T_c. The existence of such correlations was inferred to originate from the close relation between the electron-phonon coupling constant λ and Ï_n or TCR. The electronic dressed density of states at the Fermi level N(E_f) (1+λ) was calculated from the experimentally measured values of -(dH_/dT)_ and Ï_n by using theories for strong-coupling superconductors. It was found that the values of N(E_f)(1+λ) significantly reflect T_c. The GL parameter k and the GL coherence length ζ_(0) were estimated to be 69-79 and about 7.5 nm, respectively, from the experimental values of -(dH_/dT)_ and Ï_n. The metastable bcc Zr-Ge alloys are concluded to be extremely "dirty" type-II superconductors

Algorithms and Arithmetic Operators for Computing the Pairing in Characteristic Three
Since their introduction in constructive cryptographic applications,
pairings over (hyper)elliptic curves are at the heart of an ever
increasing number of protocols. Software implementations being rather
slow, the study of hardware architectures became an active research
area.
In this paper, we discuss several algorithms to compute the
pairing in characteristic three and suggest further improvements.
These algorithms involve addition, multiplication, cubing, inversion,
and sometimes cube root extraction over . We propose
a hardware accelerator based on a unified arithmetic operator able to
perform the operations required by a given algorithm. We describe the
implementation of a compact coprocessor for the field
given by ,
which compares favorably with other solutions described in the open
literature
