PS-MRT Lattice Boltzmann model for direct simulation of granular soils and seepage flow

    Get PDF
We proposed a direct numerical simulation model of granular soils and seepage flow by combining the discrete element method and the lattice Boltzmann method. The MRT model was introduced in order to obtain stable solutions of fluid flow under high Reynolds number condition. The PS model, which retains a local operation at each fluid node and keep from intensive increasing the computational costs for the calculation of collision term, was also introduced as a solid-fluid coupled model. We show the effectiveness of the PS-MRT lattice Boltzmann model through several validation tests

Desperate housewives: An analysis of the characterisations of female gamblers portrayed in gambling movies in Hong Kong

    Get PDF
This article examines portrayals of female gamblers in recent Hong Kong movies. The authors report that the depiction of female gamblers is very different from that of male gamblers in the movies made in the same period. Whereas the male gamblers are pitching a lonely and desperate battle against the evil opponent, the female gamblers portrayed in the movies are housewives or small-time players who gamble only for their personal gain. A general negative overtone in portrayals of female gamblers was interpreted as a reflection of the traditional view that discourages women from gambling. The shift of gambling themes in the Hong Kong movies has been identified to reflect the most salient concerns among Hong Kong residents. Such changes are attributed to particular social and cultural changes in the community

Detecting Spin-Polarized Currents in Ballistic Nanostructures

    Get PDF
We demonstrate a mesoscopic spin polarizer/analyzer system that allows the spin polarization of current from a quantum point contact in an in-plane magnetic field to be measured. A transverse focusing geometry is used to couple current from an emitter point contact into a collector point contact. At large in-plane fields, with the point contacts biased to transmit only a single spin (g < e^2/h), the voltage across the collector depends on the spin polarization of the current incident on it. Spin polarizations of greater than 80% are found for both emitter and collector at 300mK and 7T in-plane field.Comment: related papers at http://marcuslab.harvard.ed

Synthesis and characterization of phenylethynylcarbonyl terminated novel thermosetting imide compound

Phenylethynyl terminated novel imide compound based on 1,3-bis(3-aminophenoxy)benzene (APB) and phenylethynyl trimellitic anhydride (PETA) were prepared. The curing behavior of phenylethynyl terminated imide compound was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform infrared spectrometry. The curing reaction of phenylethynylcarbonyl end group completed at 220°C, and proceeded much faster than that of phenylethynyl end group. Glass transition temperature of the thermosetting resin from phenylethynylcarbonyl terminated novel imide compound determined by dynamic mechanical analysis was almost the same as that of o-cresolnovolac type epoxy resin. In addition, the thermosetting resin from phenylethynylcarbonyl terminated novel imide compound exhibited excellent thermal and dimensional stabilities. These excellent properties of these phenylethynyl terminated imide compound might be due to the incorporation of alkene group or aromatic ring substitutes in the backbones, which might enhance the chain interaction (molecular packing) and reduce the molecular chain mobility

Misophriopsis okinawensis sp. nov. (Crustacea: Copepoda) from Hyperbenthic Waters off Okinawa, South Japan, with Definitions of Related Genera Misophria Boeck, 1864 and Stygomisophria gen. nov.

A new misophrioid copepod Misophriopsis okinawensis (Crustacea) is reported from Kume Island, Okinawa, South Japan. A full description of the new misophrioid is presented, together with supplementary notes on the males of Misophria pallida Boeck, 1864. Consideration of the phylogeny of the new species led to a reassessment of the affinities between all the named species of Misophria Boeck, 1864 and Misophriopsis Boxshall, 1983. A new genus, Stygomisophira, is recognised based on Misophria kororiensis Boxshall et Iliffe, 1987. Diagnoses are presented of all three genera

Sign-changing tower of bubbles for a sinh-Poisson equation with asymmetric exponents

Motivated by the statistical mechanics description of stationary 2D-turbulence, for a sinh-Poisson type equation with asymmetric nonlinearity, we construct a concentrating solution sequence in the form of a tower of singular Liouville bubbles, each of which has a different degeneracy exponent. The asymmetry parameter γ(0,1]\gamma\in(0,1] corresponds to the ratio between the intensity of the negatively rotating vortices and the intensity of the positively rotating vortices. Our solutions correspond to a superposition of highly concentrated vortex configurations of alternating orientation; they extend in a nontrivial way some known results for γ=1\gamma=1. Thus, by analyzing the case γ1\gamma\neq1 we emphasize specific properties of the physically relevant parameter γ\gamma in the vortex concentration phenomena

Effect of pulsed magnetic field pre-treatment of AISI 52100 steel on the coefficient of sliding friction and wear in pin-on-disk tests

    Get PDF
Disc specimens manufactured from commercial bearing rollers (AISI 52100 steel, 62–63 HRC) in initial state and after pre-treatment by pulsed magnetic field (PMF) with a magnetic field strength of 1–7 MA/m were tested with sunflower oil using pin-on-disk apparatus. According to the obtained results the treatment causes a reduction in the coefficient of friction and wear. To explain the results, nano- and microhardness tests as well as optical and atomic force microscopy were used. Reasons of the effect of PMF on the friction and wear were discussed.Peer reviewe

Antisymmetrization of a Mean Field Calculation of the T-Matrix

The usual definition of the prior(post) interaction V(V)V(V^\prime ) between projectile and target (resp. ejectile and residual target) being contradictory with full antisymmetrization between nucleons, an explicit antisymmetrization projector A{\cal A} must be included in the definition of the transition operator, TVA+VAGV. T\equiv V^\prime{\cal A}+V^\prime{\cal A}GV. We derive the suitably antisymmetrized mean field equations leading to a non perturbative estimate of TT. The theory is illustrated by a calculation of forward α\alpha-α\alpha scattering, making use of self consistent symmetries.Comment: 30 pages, no figures, plain TeX, SPHT/93/14
