Influence of Ross Sea Bottom Water changes on the warming and freshening of the Antarctic Bottom Water in the Australian-Antarctic Basin
Changes to the properties of Antarctic Bottom Water in the Australian-Antarctic Basin (AA-AABW) between the 1990s and 2000s are documented using data from the WOCE Hydrographic Program (WHP) and repeated hydrographic surveys. Strong cooling and freshening are observed on isopycnal layers denser than <i>&gamma;<sup>n</sup></i> = 28.30 kg m<sup>−3</sup>. Changes in the average salinity and potential temperature below this isopycnal correspond to a basin-wide warming of 1300 ± 200 GW and freshening of 24 ± 3 Gt year<sup>−1</sup>. Recent changes to dense shelf water in the source regions in the Ross Sea and George V Land can explain the freshening of AA-AABW but not its extensive warming. An alternative mechanism for this warming is a decrease in the supply of AABW from the Ross Sea (RSBW). Hydrographic profiles between the western Ross Sea and George V Land (171–158° E) were analyzed with a simple advective-diffusive model to assess the causes of the observed changes. The model suggests that the warming of RSBW observed between the 1970s and 2000s can be explained by a 21 ± 23% reduction in RSBW transport and the enhancement of the vertical diffusion of heat resulting from a 30 ± 7% weakening of the abyssal stratification. The documented freshening of Ross Sea dense shelf water leads to a reduction in both salinity and density stratification. Therefore the direct freshening of RSBW at its source also produces an indirect warming of the RSBW. A simple box model suggests that the changes in RSBW properties and volume transport (a decrease of 6.7% is assumed between the year 1995 and 2005) can explain 51 ± 6% of the warming and 84 ± 10% of the freshening observed in AA-AABW
The Distance and Morphology of V723 Cassiopeiae (NOVA CASSIOPEIA 1995)
We present spatially resolved infrared spectra of V723 Cas (Nova Cassiopeia
1995) obtained over four years with the integral field spectrograph OSIRIS on
Keck II. Also presented are one epoch of spatially unresolved spectra from the
long slit spectrograph NIRSPEC on Keck II. The OSIRIS observations made use of
the laser guide star adaptive optics facility that produced diffraction-limited
spatial resolution of the strong coronal emission features in the nova ejecta.
We remove the point-like continuum from V723 Cas data cubes to reveal details
of the extended nebula and find that emission due to [Si VI] and [Ca VIII] has
an equatorial ring structure with polar nodules-a strikingly different
morphology than emission due to [Al IX], which appears as a prolate spheroid.
The contrast in structure may indicate separate ejection events. Using the
angular expansion and Doppler velocities observed over four epochs spaced at
one year intervals, we determine the distance to V723 Cas to be 3.85+0.23-0.21
kpc. We present the OSIRIS three-dimensional data here in many ways: as
narrowband images, one- and two-dimensional spectra, and a volume rendering
that reveals the true shape of the ejecta.Comment: 37 pages, 8 figure
Electrical transport properties of atomically thin WSe2 using perpendicular magnetic anisotropy metal contacts
Tungsten diselenide, WSe2 shows excellent properties and become very
promising material among two dimensional semiconductors. Wide band gap and
large spin-orbit coupling along with naturally lacking inversion symmetry in
the monolayer WSe2 make it efficient material for spintronics, optoelectronics
and valleytronics applications. In this work, we report electrical transport
properties of monolayer WSe2 based field effect transistor with most needed
multilayer Co/Pt ferromagnetic electrodes exhibiting perpendicular magnetic
anisotropy. We studied contacts behaviour by performing I-V curve measurements
and estimating Schottky barrier heights (SBHs). SBHs estimated from
experimental data are found to be comparatively small, without using any tunnel
barrier. This work expands the current understanding of WSe2 based devices and
gives insight into the electrical behaviour of Co/Pt metal contacts, which can
open great possibilities for spintronic/valleytronic applications.Comment: 8 pages, 4 figure
