    Absolute Upper Bound on the 1-loop Corrected mass of S1S_1 in the NMSSM

    We examine in detail radiative corrections to the lightest scalar Higgs boson mass due to the top quark and scalar quark loops in the next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model (NMSSM). We take into account the nondegenerate state for the top scalar quark masses. In our analysis, the mass matrix of the top scalar quark contains the gauge terms. Therefore our formula for the scalar Higgs boson mass matrix at the 1-loop level includes the contribution of the gauge sector as well as the effect of the top scalar quark mass splitting. Thus we calculate the upper bound on the lightest scalar Higgs boson mass using our formula. We find that the absolute upper bound on the 1-loop corrected mass of the lightest scalar Higgs boson is about 156 GeV.Comment: 12 pages(Latex), 6 Postscript figures are included Figur

    The fibroblast Tiam1-osteopontin pathway modulates breast cancer invasion and metastasis

    Background The tumor microenvironment has complex effects in cancer pathophysiology that are not fully understood. Most cancer therapies are directed against malignant cells specifically, leaving pro-malignant signals from the microenvironment unaddressed. Defining specific mechanisms by which the tumor microenvironment contributes to breast cancer metastasis may lead to new therapeutic approaches against advanced breast cancer. Methods We use a novel method for manipulating three-dimensional mixed cell co-cultures, along with studies in mouse xenograft models of human breast cancer and a histologic study of human breast cancer samples, to investigate how breast cancer-associated fibroblasts affect the malignant behaviors of breast cancer cells. Results Altering fibroblast Tiam1 expression induces changes in invasion, migration, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, and cancer stem cell characteristics in associated breast cancer cells. These changes are both dependent on fibroblast secretion of osteopontin and also long-lasting even after cancer cell dissociation from the fibroblasts, indicating a novel Tiam1-osteopontin pathway in breast cancer-associated fibroblasts. Notably, inhibition of fibroblast osteopontin with low doses of a novel small molecule prevents lung metastasis in a mouse model of human breast cancer metastasis. Moreover, fibroblast expression patterns of Tiam1 and osteopontin in human breast cancers show converse changes correlating with invasion, supporting the hypothesis that this pathway in tumor-associated fibroblasts regulates breast cancer invasiveness in human disease and is thus clinically relevant. Conclusions These findings suggest a new therapeutic paradigm for preventing breast cancer metastasis. Pro-malignant signals from the tumor microenvironment with long-lasting effects on associated cancer cells may perpetuate the metastatic potential of developing cancers. Inhibition of these microenvironment signals represents a new therapeutic strategy against cancer metastasis that enables targeting of stromal cells with less genetic plasticity than associated cancer cells and opens new avenues for investigation of novel therapeutic targets and agents.National Institute of General Medical Sciences (U.S.) (GM074825

    Case study on high-resolution monitoring network of groundwater heat pump system

    With the increasing installation of shallow geothermal energy, the importance of thermal impact prediction also increases in the system design stage. In nature, it is general that heterogeneity exists and it can affect the groundwater flow as well as the transport along to the flow. When predicting heat transport under the groundwater heat pump (GWHP) operation, however, impacts of heterogeneity have rarely been considered. In this study, to detect the hydraulic and thermal feedback to the two months of GWHP operation, a dense monitoring network was constructed with 12 monitoring wells at Eumseong-gun, Republic of Korea. The temperature was monitored in high resolution via fiber-optic distributed temperature sensing. During the GWHP operation, a very dynamic flow condition was generated with the hydraulic gradient between 0.005 and 0.07. The maximum temperature change at the nearest monitoring well was 2 ?. Observed hydraulic and thermal responses showed spatially heterogeneous results. While the heterogeneous responses of hydraulic change were stronger near the geothermal wells, those of temperature change were higher near the center of the thermal plume

    Integration of Brassinosteroid Signal Transduction with the Transcription Network for Plant Growth Regulation in Arabidopsis

    SummaryBrassinosteroids (BRs) regulate a wide range of developmental and physiological processes in plants through a receptor-kinase signaling pathway that controls the BZR transcription factors. Here, we use transcript profiling and chromatin-immunoprecipitation microarray (ChIP-chip) experiments to identify 953 BR-regulated BZR1 target (BRBT) genes. Functional studies of selected BRBTs further demonstrate roles in BR promotion of cell elongation. The BRBT genes reveal numerous molecular links between the BR-signaling pathway and downstream components involved in developmental and physiological processes. Furthermore, the results reveal extensive crosstalk between BR and other hormonal and light-signaling pathways at multiple levels. For example, BZR1 not only controls the expression of many signaling components of other hormonal and light pathways but also coregulates common target genes with light-signaling transcription factors. Our results provide a genomic map of steroid hormone actions in plants that reveals a regulatory network that integrates hormonal and light-signaling pathways for plant growth regulation

    Prevalence of Otolaryngologic Diseases in South Korea: Data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2008

    Objectives. The aims of this study were to evaluate the prevalence of otolaryngologic diseases in Korea. Methods. We obtained data from the 2008 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (KNHANES), which were cross-sectional surveys of the civilian, non-institutionalized population of South Korea (n=4,930). A field survey team that included an otolaryngologist, nurses, and interviewers moved with a mobile examination unit and performed otolaryngologic interviews and physical examinations. Results. The prevalence of subjective hearing loss, tinnitus, preauricular fistua, tympanic membrane perforation, and cholesteatoma were 11.97%, 20.27%, 2.08%, 1.60%, and 1.18%, respectively. Dizziness and vestibular dysfunction were common among Korean adults, since 23.33% of the participants reported symptoms of dizziness or imbalance, and the prevalence of vestibular dysfunction was 3.86%. The prevalence of nasal diseases was relatively high, as the prevalence of allergic rhinitis, chronic rhinosinusitis, and a deviated nasal septum were 28.01%, 7.12%, and 42.94%, respectively. Subjective dysphonia was found in 6.60% of the participants, and the prevalence of subjective dysphonia increased with age. Conclusion. This is the first nation-wide epidemiologic study to assess the prevalence of otolaryngologic diseases by both the Korean Otolaryngologic Society and the Ministry of Health and Welfare. Considering the high prevalence of otolaryngologic diseases in Korea, the results call for additional studies to better prevent and manage otolaryngologic diseases
