    Observation of Competing Order in a High-TcT_{c} Superconductor with Femtosecond Optical Pulses

    We present studies of the photoexcited quasiparticle dynamics in Tl2_{2}Ba2_{2}Ca2_{2}Cu3_{3}Oy_{y} (Tl-2223) using femtosecond optical techniques. Deep into the superconducting state (below 40 K), a dramatic change occurs in the temporal dynamics associated with photoexcited quasiparticles rejoining the condensate. This is suggestive of entry into a coexistence phase which, as our analysis reveals, opens a gap in the density of states (in addition to the superconducting gap), and furthermore, competes with superconductivity resulting in a depression of the superconducting gap.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

    Clinical characteristics of acute kidney injury in patients with glyphosate surfactant herbicide poisoning

    Background In this study, we investigated the clinical characteristics of acute kidney injury (AKI) in patients with glyphosate surfactant herbicide (GSH) poisoning. Methods This study was performed between 2008 and 2021 and included 184 patients categorized into the AKI (n = 82) and non-AKI (n = 102) groups. The incidence, clinical characteristics, and severity of AKI were compared between the groups based on the Risk of renal dysfunction, Injury to the kidney, Failure or Loss of kidney function, and End-stage kidney disease (RIFLE) classification. Results The incidence of AKI was 44.5%, of which 25.0%, 6.5%, and 13.0% of patients were classified into the Risk, Injury, and Failure categories, respectively. Patients in the AKI group were older (63.3 ± 16.2 years vs. 57.4 ± 17.5 years, p = 0.02) than those in the non-AKI group. The length of hospitalization was longer (10.7 ± 12.1 days vs. 6.5 ± 8.1 days, p = 0.004) and hypotensive episodes occurred more frequently in the AKI group (45.1% vs. 8.8%, p < 0.001). Electrocardiographic (ECG) abnormalities on admission were more frequently observed in the AKI group than in the non-AKI group (80.5% vs. 47.1%, p < 0.001). Patients in the AKI group had poorer renal function (estimated glomerular filtration rate at the time of admission, 62.2 ± 22.9 mL/min/1.73 m2 vs. 88.9 ± 26.1 mL/min/1.73 m2, p < 0.001) on admission. The mortality rate was higher in the AKI group than in the non-AKI group (18.3% vs. 1.0%, p < 0.001). Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that hypotension and ECG abnormalities upon admission were significant predictors of AKI in patients with GSH poisoning. Conclusion The presence of hypotension on admission may be a useful predictor of AKI in patients with GSH intoxication

    Ubiquitin ligase MKRN1 modulates telomere length homeostasis through a proteolysis of hTERT

    Telomere homeostasis is regulated by telomerase and a collection of associatedproteins. Telomerase is, in turn, regulated by post-translational modifications of the rate-limiting catalytic subunit hTERT. Here we show that disruption of Hsp90 by geldanamycin promotes efficient ubiquitination and proteasome-mediated degradation of hTERT. Furthermore, we have used the yeast two-hybrid method to identify a novel RING finger gene (MKRN1) encoding an E3 ligase that mediates ubiquitination of hTERT. Overexpression of MKRN1 in telomerase-positive cells promotes the degradation of hTERT and decreases telomerase activity and subsequently telomere length. Our data suggest that MKRN1 plays an important role in modulating telomere length homeostasis through a dynamic balance involving hTERT protein stability

    Determination of Fire Blight Susceptibility on Wild Rosaceae Plants in Korea by Artificial Inoculation

    The fire blight caused by Erwinia amylovora (Ea) is a devastating disease of Rosaceae plants, including commercially important apple and pear trees. Since the first report in Korea in May 2015, it has been spreading to neighboring regions gradually. Host plants can be infected by pollinators like bees, rainfall accompanied by wind, and cultural practices such as pruning. Many studies have revealed that wild Rosaceae plants such as Cotoneaster spp., Crataegus spp., Pyracantha spp., Prunus spp., and Sorbus spp. can be reservoirs of Ea in nature. However, wild Rosaceae plants in Korea have not been examined yet whether they are susceptible to fire blight. Therefore, the susceptibility to fire blight was examined with 25 species in 10 genera of wild Rosaceae plants, which were collected during 2020–2022, by artificial inoculation. Bacterial suspension (108 cfu/ml) of Ea type strain TS3128 was inoculated artificially in flowers, leaves, stems, and fruits of each plant species, and development of disease symptoms were monitored. Moreover, the presence of Ea bacteria from inoculated samples were checked by conventional polymerase chain reaction. Total 14 species of wild Rosaceae plants showed disease symptoms of fire blight, and Ea bacteria were detected inside of inoculated plant parts. These results suggest that wild Rosaceae plants growing nearby commercial apple and pear orchards in Korea can be Ea reservoirs, and thus they should be monitored regularly to minimize the damage by Ea infection and spreading
