Birefringent and dichroic behaviour of plasmonic nano-antennas

    Get PDF
Birefringence and dichroism of plasmonic nano-antennas are investigated. We demonstrate that birefringent and dichroic behaviour of a cross-dipole nanoantenna is due to a length difference, and a relative plasmonic enhancement of the antenna particles, respectively

Technical response functions for corn -- an economic analysis of nitrogen fertilizer experiments

Includes vita."The main objective of this study is to estimate corn response functions for nitrogen and plant population using experimental data in three counties of Missouri. These response functions will be used in two ways: (a) to determine some economic criterion such as profits, use of nitrogen, variances in expected returns, etc. under different conditions; and (b) to compare farmers' use of nitrogen to the criterion developed in part (a) to suggest hypotheses about farmers' behavior and to determine whether farmers are irrational in the direction of over-use or in the direction of under-use of the nitrogen input. To accomplish this objective data from a series of experiments will be used to derive annual and average production functions for each of the three counties where the experiments were located. To avoid the consequences of one set of environmental conditions and to obtain more general results experiments were repeated by the Missouri Agricultural Experiment Station during the period 1961-1969 (Colyer, 1969; Colyer and Kroth, 1968, 1970). Economic analysis of the estimated production functions with certainty and uncertainty analyses including annual optima, minimum variance, and minimum cost input combinations, expected profit and price sensitivity analyses should indicate what farmers would be doing under different conditions if they were economically rational. Then, actual nitrogen use will be estimated for the same period in each county. Results such as amount of nitrogen, expected profits, variances in expected profits, and variable costs will be compared with the results obtained from experimental data in Boone, Grundy and Saline counties. These comparisons will enable us to decide whether farmers are over or under using the nitrogen. Locational differences in resource use, if any, will be analyzed. Finally, overall results will be evaluated from the pollution standpoint in a more general economic framework."--Introduction.Includes bibliographical references

Circularly polarized localized near-field radiation at the nanoscale

A novel nano-antenna configuration is suggested to achieve circularly polarized optical spots beyond the diffraction limit. Intense optical spots with circular polarization are obtained using a cross-dipole nano-antenna

THE CHANGING NATURE OF SALES LEADERSHIP IN THE INFORMATION AGE: TRANSACTIONAL OR TRANSFORMATIONAL - WHICH TO RELY ON?

    Get PDF
The new economy, by the courtesy of the information age, requires knowledge-based organizations and in turn new leaders to quickly respond to changes in resources, technologies, marketing and distribution systems. By the same token, the notion of leadership has shifted from a parochial point of view towards a more humanistic and vivid multi-dimensional angle of vision. In this context, transactional and transformational leadership styles in right combination are the source of guidance through the dynamic leadership journey and drawing upon the triple entente of rational, emotional and spiritual intelligence as well will benefit mutual parties - both at individual and organizational level, in terms of effective leadership processes and increased performance outcomes

An osteologic study of human ethmoidal foramina with special reference to their classification and symmetry

The present investigation was designed to study the anatomy of the ethmoidal foramina in adult human dry skulls. In addition to investigate the number of ethmoidal foramina that can be found on the orbital wall, we also addressed their classification and symmetry. The analysis of 1089 orbits demonstrated that the average number of ethmoidal foramina/orbit was 2.07 (range 0 to 4). As for their classification, we devised the relative depth index (RDI) to differentiate the anterior from the posterior ethmoidal foramina. The index represents the ratio “distance of the foramen from the anterior lacrimal crest/length of the medial orbital wall”. The average index of the anterior and posterior ethmoidal foramina were 0.53±0.04 and 0.84±0.06 respectively. As the mean of the two indexes was 0.685, we used the latter value as a sort of numerical watershed to define the domains of the anterior and of the posterior ethmoidal foramina on the orbital wall. Thus all ethmoidal foramina with an RDI ≤ 0.68 were considered anterior ethmoidal foramina and all ethmoidal foramina with an RDI ≥ 0.69 were considered posterior ethmoidal foramina. In this way it is possible to properly classify foramina on orbits with 1, 3 or 4 ethmoidal foramina. As for their symmetry, in contrast to what had been previously reported, we observed that in most cases ethmoidal foramina have a highly symmetric arrangement both in terms of number of foramina on fellow orbits and of position along the orbital wall
