The volcanic and radial expansion/contraction history of the Moon simulated by numerical models of magmatism in the convective mantle

To understand the evolution of the Moon, we numerically modeled mantle convection and magmatism in a two-dimensional polar rectangular mantle. Magmatism occurs as an upward permeable flow of magma generated by decompression melting through the convecting matrix. The mantle is assumed to be initially enriched in heat-producing elements (HPEs) and compositionally dense ilmenite-bearing cumulates (IBC) at its base. Here, we newly show that magma generation and migration play a crucial role in the calculated volcanic and radial expansion/contraction history. Magma is generated in the deep mantle by internal heating for the first several hundred million years. A large volume of the generated magma ascends to the surface as partially molten fingers and plumes driven by melt-buoyancy to cause a volcanic activity and radial expansion of the planet with the peak at 3.5-4 Gyr ago. Eventually, however, the planet begins to radially contract when the mantle solidifies by cooling from the surface boundary. As the mantle is cooled, the activity of partially molten plumes declines but continues for billions of years after the peak because some basal materials enriched in the dense IBC components hold HPEs. The calculated volcanic and radial expansion/contraction history is consistent with the observed history of the Moon. Our simulations suggest a substantial fraction of the mantle was solid, and there was a basal layer enriched in HPEs and the IBC components at the beginning of the history of the Moon.Comment: 36 pages, 10 figures, and 3 table

Prediction of fetal acidemia in placental abruption

BACKGROUND: To determine the major predictive factors for fetal acidemia in placental abruption. METHODS: A retrospective review of pregnancies with placental abruption was performed using a logistic regression model. Fetal acidemia was defined as a pH of less than 7.0 in umbilical artery. The severe abruption score, which was derived from a linear discriminant function, was calculated to determine the probability of fetal acidemia. RESULTS: Fetal acidemia was seen in 43 survivors (43/222, 19%). A logistic regression model showed bradycardia (OR (odds ratio) 50.34, 95% CI 11.07 – 228.93), and late decelerations (OR 15.13, 3.05 – 74.97), but not abnormal ultrasonographic findings were to be associated with the occurrence of fetal acidemia. The severe abruption score was calculated for the occurrence of fetal acidemia, using 6 items including vaginal bleeding, gestational age, abdominal pain, abnormal ultrasonographic finding, late decelerations, and bradycardia. CONCLUSIONS: An abnormal FHR pattern, especially bradycardia is the most significant risk factor in placental abruption predicting fetal acidemia, regardless of the presence of abnormal ultrasonographic findings or gestational age

On the histo-morphological changes of transplantable tumors.

    1. When chicken sarcoma virus is serially inoculated on the mouse brain, it loses its carcinogenecity, but when it is inoculated on young chicken, granuloma develops in the liver and lung. When this granuloma is transplanted on adult chicken, a transplantable fibrosarcoma is obtained. 2. According to literature, the originaltumor of the Brown-Pearce cancer is a basal cell cancer, but that imported to Japan in 1953 presented a histological picture of carcinosarcoma. The metastasized tumor of the eye presents a purely cancer tissue, but when this is inoculated on the testis, carcinosarcoma is reproduced. It is therefore considered that the mother cell of the sarcoma is of host origin. 3. MY sarcoma is not a sarcoma, but is a spindle cell cancer. It might be a sarcoma which transformed into a cancer during serial transplantation, but perhaps it was originally a cancer but had been erroneously diagnosed as sarcoma. 4. The tumors we obtained by means of the feeding tests of Yoshida tumor all developed at organs other than those of the digestive tract. They are chiefly reticulo-sarcoma, but others which develop are malignant granuloma in the liver and lung, malignant adenoma in the kidney, papilloma of pelvis, and ependymoma in the cerebral ventricle. Since the discovery of the Yoshida tumor in 1943, serial transplantation has been conducted for 19 years with this tumor not only in Japan but also in foreign countries, but there has been no report to this date that a transformed strain has developed by cell transplantation. It therefore must be considered that the carcinogenesis observed in our feeding tests is a carcinogenesis due to a mechanism completely unlike that of cell transplantation. It has been confirmed by electron microscopy that in the early stage of transplantation of this tumor into the abdominal cavity there was an additional tumor growth due to the anaplastic proliferation of serous cells. 5. During the serial transplantation of viral tumors and/or virus dependent tumors, the tumor sometimes undergoes a morphological change. Though the cause of this is not yet sufficiently elucidated, it is suspected that there is some relationship with virus in the wide sense.</p

Background: Imeglimin (Twymeeg) has been effective for patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Case Presentation: The patient is an 82-year-old female with T2D, arthralgia, and depression. Results: She was given duloxetine hydrochloride (Cymbalta) and Twymeeg, leading to improved symptoms of low back pain (LBP), knee osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, depression, and possible mild cognitive impairment (MCI). HbA1c decreased from 8.8% to 7.1% for 4 months with a single administration of Twymeeg 2000mg/day. Discussion: In recent clinical practice, elderly cases often tend to have simultaneously these problems, which are medical and social crucial problems. Twymeeg and Cymbalta may be indispensable agents for future practice
