Ecology and Host Associations of \u3ci\u3eHistiogaster Arborsignis\u3c/i\u3e (Acari: Acaridae) in the Great Lakes Region, Particularly in the Huron Mountains of Northern Michigan
Histiogaster arborsignis is recorded from subcortical habitats and fungal fruiting bodies in the Huron Mountains of northern Michigan. Deutonymphs were collected from 15 species of Coleoptera, Hymenoptera and Diptera. Additional host and locality records for this species are provided from other areas in the Great Lakes region
Systematics, Ecology and Host Associations of \u3ci\u3eNaiadacarus\u3c/i\u3e (Acari: Acaridae) in the Great Lakes Region
Naiadacarus arboricola Fashing, is reported from adults collected from water-filled treeholes and deutonymphs phoretic on Mallota species, Eristalis bardus and Somula decora (Diptera: Syrphidae) from Michigan, Illinois, and New York. Naiadacarus fashingi, new species, is described from deutonymphs phoretic on Brachypalpus oarus and seven other species of Syrphidae from Michigan, New York and New Jersey. Naiadacarus mydophilus, new species, is described from deutonymphs phoretic on Brachypalpus oarus from Michigan. Based upon known biologies of host insects and other mite species which utilize these hosts, it is hypothesized that N. lashingi and N. mydophilus may inhabit wet decaying wood andior moist treeholes rather than water-filled treeholes. Naiadacarus is hypothesized to be closely related to the genera Schwiebea, Histiogaster and Thyreophagus. The subfamily name Naiadacarinae is placed in synonymy with Rhizoglyphinae
Ontogeny and Systematics of the Genus \u3ci\u3eCerophagus\u3c/i\u3e (Acari: Gaudiellidae), Mites Associated With Bumblebees
Nymphs and adults of Cerophagus nearcticus n. sp. are described from the nest of Bombus terricola occidentalis in California and phoretic associations with B. impatiens in Michigan and New York. On the basis of adult morphology, the genus Cerophagopsis is removed from synonymy with Cerophagus and retained in the family Acaridae, while Cerophagus is transferred to the family Gaudiellidae. The genus Rhypoglyphus is considered a junior subjecÂtive synonym of Cerophagopsis. The genera of Gaudiellidae are noted and the genus Trigonacoptes is considered a junior subjective synonym of Gaudiella

Actin-dependent cell elongation in teleost retinal rods: requirement for actin filament assembly.
Teleost retinal rods elongate when exposed to light. Elongation is mediated by a narrow necklike region called the myoid. In the cichlid Sarotherodon mossambicus, the rod inner segment (composed of the myoid with adjacent ellipsoid) increases in length from 12 micrometers in the dark to 41 micrometers in the light. Long light-adapted myoids contain longitudinally oriented microtubules and bundles of parallel 60-A filaments that we have identified as actin by their ability to bind myosin subfragment 1. In short dark-adapted myoids, only microtubules are recognizable. Colchicine experiments reveal that light-induced rod elongation can occur in the absence of myoid microtubules. Intraocular injections of colchicine at concentrations that disrupt virtually all rod myoid microtubules do not block rod elongation. However, rod elongation is blocked by intraocular injections of cytochalasin B or cytochalasin D. The hierarchy of effectiveness of these drugs is consistent with their effectiveness in inhibiting actin assembly and in disrupting other actin-dependent motile processes. On the basis of ultrastructural observations and the results of these inhibitor studies, we propose that the forces responsible for rod elongation are dependent not on microtubules but on actin filament assembly
Approaches to rotor fragment protection
Key airworthiness design criteria considerations for fragment protection as found in various FAA requirements in FAR Parts 25 and 33, and in interpretive 8110 orders are reviewed. The impact of providing aircraft armor in lieu of engine armor for typical three- and four-engine wide bodied transports for protection within the length of the engine case as well as from fragments exiting ahead of the enlet engine inlet flange is assessed. For protection within the length of the engine case, armor weight penalties, plus fuel burned and dollar cost of carrying the armor protection are defined. Immediately ahead of the inlet flange, direct tangential impacts are predominant, but further forward, rebound impacts predominate. Armor thickness requirements and fuel cost impact of protection are given
The 14 month wind stressed residual circulation (pole tide) in the North Sea
From published research it is known that a quasi-periodic 14 month atmospheric pressure oscillation of a few tenths of a millibar exists in the region of the North and Baltic Seas. At some time in the cycle the associated wind stress has a westerly component that drives a circulation in the North Sea. The results of a dynamical model and comparisons with several North Sea residual circulation studies show that a large sea level gradient results along the Dutch coast. It is this feature that has been referred to as the enhanced pole tide. The dynamical similarity of this pole tide in the North and Baltic Seas to the annual and seasonal wind forced circulations is considered. It is inferred that the large deviations of the pole tide from equilibrium at coastal stations are the result of this sea level set up forces by the 14 month wind stress cycle

Fastener stretcher
A description is given of a fastener stretcher used to apply a substantial pure axial tensile force to a structural bolt or similar fastening element. The system is comprised of a pair of telescoping elements, one of which is temporarily secured to the bolt. By spreading the telescoping elements axially, the bolt is tensioned axially to permit a nut or the like to be threaded with a minimum of torque; when the elements are then removed from the bolt, the axial forces on the bolt are taken up by the nut to retain the bolt in its stressed state
Condensate-removal device for heat exchangers
Device comprises array of perforated tubes manifolded together and connected to a vacuum suction device. Vacuum applied to these tubes pulls mixture of condensate and effluent gas through perforations and along length of tubes to discharge device. Discharge device may be a separator which separates water vapor from effluent air and allows recirculation of both of them
