Spectrum conditions for symmetric extendible states
We analyze bipartite quantum states that admit a symmetric extension. Any
such state can be decomposed into a convex combination of states that allow a
_pure_ symmetric extension. A necessary condition for a state to admit a pure
symmetric extension is that the spectra of the local and global density
matrices are equal. This condition is also sufficient for two qubits, but not
for any larger systems. Using this condition we present a conjectured necessary
and sufficient condition for a two qubit state to admit symmetric extension,
which we prove in some special cases. The results from symmetric extension
carry over to degradable and anti-degradable channels and we use this to prove
that all degradable channels with qubit output have a qubit environment.Comment: 14 pages, 2 figure
Celebratory Activism: A Media Portrayal of Southern Identity
Celebratory Activism: A Media Portrayal of Southern Identity (Under the Direction of Dr. Mark Dolan)
The objective ofthis paper is to investigate the media\u27s role in portraying southern identity and to determine the media\u27s effect on the surrounding communities. It specifically addresses the three media institutions of Thacker Mountain Radio, The Oxford American, and The Southern Foodways Alliance and determines how they represent and celebrate southern culture. The methodology of the paper consists of the assessment of existing literature in the field of the media\u27s depiction of the South followed by case studies on Thacker Mountain Radio, The Oxford American, and The Southern Foodways Alliance. Through interviews and personal testimonies regarding Thacker Mountain Radio, through personal correspondences concerning the editorial mission of The Oxford American, and through examining the specific documentary and new media practices of The Southern Foodways Alliance, this study shows the power that the media can have within a community. As represented by these case studies, the media has the potential to positively affect communities and to unite a diverse culture through celebratory activism. With this realization, this paper argues that Thacker Mountain Radio, The Oxford American, and The Southern Foodways Alliance are three media forces that are positively impacting the South by celebrating, empowering, and strengthening the diversity of the region. These three media institutions exemplify the power that the media has to bring communities together in order to learn from one another and to celebrate the rich connection of a shared southern identity

A sustainability assessment framework for genome-edited salmon
In this paper we present a suggestion for a sustainability assessment framework using genome editing of salmon as a case study. The salmon farming industry is facing several challenges hindering sustainable production. Genome editing has entered as a tool that can improve selective breeding and feed ingredients in aquaculture, hence providing solutions such as resistance to salmon lice and other pathogens, and sterility reducing interbreeding with wild, threatened stocks. As a goal for aquaculture is that its practices and products contribute to sustainability, the use of genome editing needs to be assessed with regards to sustainability, too. In our work, we draw on three sources of information; strategy and policy documents published by governmental offices and industry organizations; relevant GMO regulations and operationalization reports; and qualitative empirical data from 19 semi-structured interviews with Norwegian key stakeholders, and four semi-structured citizen groups. The findings from our analyses are discussed in relation to a Wedding cake-model for sustainability developed at the Stockholm Resilience Centre based on the UN SDGs and the three pillars of sustainability: biosphere, society, and economy. Analysis of document and interview data shows three main findings, one within each of the sustainability pillars. First, we identified that the biosphere pillar, including protection of the environment and the wild salmon, is the major sustainability issue and therefore important for the assessment of sustainability in the aquaculture industry and for the potential introduction of genome-edited salmon. Second, in the pillar for society the preservation of cultural and natural resources should be included, and in the Norwegian context this includes preserving the Sámi culture reliance on the wild salmon stocks. Third, in the economy pillar animal welfare needs to be included both for efficiency and ethical responsibility in farming. With some adoption to local and national conditions and the fish species in question, the same framework can be used for sustainability assessment of genome edited finfish in general.publishedVersio
Analysis of Self: The Unfortunate Exploration and Development of Myself
Abstract
Through this analysis of myself, greater insight and understanding created a chance for me to understand why my aspirations are focused where they are. Taking the time to reminisce on my upbringing, relationships, and the other aspects of life allowed true reflection. This allowed me to see where specific thoughts and feelings come from. The analysis of self included taking and analyzing assessments, conducting interviews with significant people in my life, integrating theory, and reflecting on next steps for continued development. This project was an opportunity to express myself and reflect on how I would like to continue my personal and profession development
