Tensor networks and the numerical renormalization group
The full-density-matrix numerical renormalization group (NRG) has evolved as
a systematic and transparent setting for the cal- culation of thermodynamical
quantities at arbitrary temperatures within the NRG framework. It directly
evaluates the relevant Lehmann representations based on the complete basis sets
intro- duced by Anders and Schiller (2005). In addition, specific attention is
given to the possible feedback from low energy physics to high energies by the
explicit and careful construction of the full thermal density matrix, naturally
generated over a distribution of energy shells. Specific examples are given in
terms of spectral functions (fdmNRG), time-dependent NRG (tdmNRG), Fermi-Golden
rule calculations (fgrNRG), as well as the calculation of plain thermodynamic
expectation values. Furthermore, based on the very fact that, by its iterative
nature, the NRG eigenstates are naturally described in terms of matrix product
states, the language of tensor networks has proven enormously convenient in the
description of the underlying algorithmic procedures. This paper therefore also
provides a detailed introduction and discussion of the prototypical NRG
calculations in terms of their corresponding tensor networks.Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures (adapted from habilitation thesis
On Galois-Division Multiple Access Systems: Figures of Merit and Performance Evaluation
A new approach to multiple access based on finite field transforms is
investigated. These schemes, termed Galois-Division Multiple Access (GDMA),
offer compact bandwidth requirements. A new digital transform, the Finite Field
Hartley Transform (FFHT) requires to deal with fields of characteristic p, p
\neq 2. A binary-to-p-ary (p \neq 2) mapping based on the opportunistic
secondary channel is introduced. This allows the use of GDMA in conjunction
with available digital systems. The performance of GDMA is also evaluated.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures. In: XIX Simposio Brasileiro de Telecomunicacoes,

Effect of the curing time on the numerical modelling of the behaviour of a chemically stabilised soft soil
The ability of the Modified Cam Clay (MCC) model combined with the Von Mises (VM) model, considering the effect of curing time on the enhancement of the mechanical properties of a chemically stabilised soft soil is examined. The evolution of the strength and stiffness over time is based on the results of undrained compressive strength (UCS) tests carried out for different curing times (from 28 days to 360 days). Initially, the MCC/VM models associated with the effect of curing time are validated by CIU triaxial tests, for curing times of 28 and 90 days. Finally, the behaviour of an embankment built on a soft soil reinforced with deep mixing columns is predicted based on the previously validated models. The results show that the increase of curing time of the DMCs slightly decreases the settlement obtained with a curing time of 28 days
