Magnetic susceptibility and low-temperature specific-heat of integrable 1-D Hubbard model under open-boundary conditions
The magnetic susceptibility and the low-temperature specific heat of the
1-dimensional Hubbard model under the integrable open-boundary conditions are
discussed through the Bethe ansatz with the string hypothesis. The
contributions of the boundary fields to both the susceptibility and the
specific heat are obtained, and their exact expressions are analytically
derived.Comment: 14 pages, Latex, No figures, to appear in J. Phys. A: Gen. & Mat
Kondo effect in a quantum critical ferromagnet
We study the Heisenberg ferromagnetic spin chain coupled with a boundary
impurity. Via Bethe ansatz solution, it is found that (i) for J>0, the impurity
spin behaves as a diamagnetic center and is completely screened by 2S bulk
spins in the ground state, no matter how large the impurity spin is; (ii) The
specific heat of the local composite (impurity plus 2S bulk spins which form
bound state with it) shows a simple power law . (iii)For
J<0, the impurity is locked into the critical behavior of the bulk. Possible
phenomena in higher dimensions are discussed.Comment: 6page Revtex, no figure, final version in PRB, Jun 1 issue, 199
Ghost spins and novel quantum critical behavior in a spin chain with local bond-deformation
We study the boundary impurity-induced critical behavior in an integrable
SU(2)-invariant model consisting of an open Heisenberg chain of arbitrary
spin- (Takhatajian-Babujian model) interacting with an impurity of spin
located at one of the boundaries. For or , the
impurity interaction has a very simple form which
describes the deformed boundary bond between the impurity and the
first bulk spin with an arbitrary strength . With a weak
coupling , the impurity is completely compensated,
undercompensated, and overcompensated for , and as in the
usual Kondo problem. While for strong coupling , the
impurity spin is split into two ghost spins. Their cooperative effect leads to
a variety of new critical behaviors with different values of .Comment: 16 pages revtex, no figur
