Discrete structure of ultrathin dielectric films and their surface optical properties

The boundary problem of linear classical optics about the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with a thin dielectric film has been solved under explicit consideration of its discrete structure. The main attention has been paid to the investigation of the near-zone optical response of dielectrics. The laws of reflection and refraction for discrete structures in the case of a regular atomic distribution are studied and the structure of evanescent harmonics induced by an external plane wave near the surface is investigated in details. It is shown by means of analytical and numerical calculations that due to the existence of the evanescent harmonics the laws of reflection and refraction at the distances from the surface less than two interatomic distances are principally different from the Fresnel laws. From the practical point of view the results of this work might be useful for the near-field optical microscopy of ultrahigh resolution.Comment: 25 pages, 16 figures, LaTeX2.09, to be published in Phys.Rev.

The European internet-based patient and research database for primary immunodeficiencies: results 2006-2008

Primary immunodeficiencies (PID) are rare diseases; therefore transnational studies are essential to maximize the scientific outcome and to improve diagnosis and therapy. In order to estimate the prevalence of PID in Europe as well as to establish and evaluate harmonized guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of PID, the European Society for Immunodeficiencies (ESID) has developed an internet-based database for clinical and research data on patients with PID. This database is a platform for epidemiological analyses as well as the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies and the identification of novel disease-associated genes. Within 4 years, 7430 patients from 39 countries have been documented in the ESID database. Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) represents the most common entity, with 1540 patients or 20.7% of all entries, followed by isolated immunoglobulin (Ig)G subclass deficiency (546 patients, 7.4%). Evaluations show that the average life expectancy for PID patients varies from 1 to 49 years (median), depending on the type of PID. The prevalence and incidence of PID remains a key question to be answered. As the registration progress is far from finished we can only calculate minimum values for PID, with e.g. France currently showing a minimum prevalence of 3.72 patients per 100,000 inhabitants. The most frequently documented permanent treatment is immunoglobulin replacement; 2819 patients (42% of all patients alive) currently receive this form of treatment

Optics of embedded semiconductor nano-objects using a hybrid model: bare versus dressed polarizabilities

    No full text
The influence of the surrounding semiconducting matrix upon the optical response of embedded nano-objects (quantum dots) has been investigated. This system can be described by means of a hybrid model, where the full response is a combination of a macroscopic electrostatic response term and a dynamic response term, obtained quantum mechanically. The result is a modified discrete dipole model, where excess discrete dipoles having an excess polarizability with respect to a uniform background identical to the dielectric host material represent the response. In this model all electrodynamic interactions are screened by the host material. The electrostatic response is obtained by approximating the quantum dots by embedded dielectric oblate ellipsoids. Closed expressions for the electrostatic response of these ellipsoids have been derived. The electrodynamic nature of the dynamic quantum mechanical polarizability term however is unclear. It is not certain whether this polarizability is dressed or bare. Therefore we have investigated in detail the consequences of both options. Although there is no real qualitative difference between them, the difference is so large that experiment can easily discriminate between both. Results should be easily measurable anyhow.
