Role of Li_2B_(12)H_(12) for the Formation and Decomposition of LiBH_4

    Get PDF
By in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, the role of Li_2B_(12)H_(12) for the sorption of LiBH_4 is analyzed. We demonstrate that Li_2B_(12)H_(12) and an amorphous Li_2B_(10)H_(10) phase are formed by the reaction of LiBH_4 with diborane (B_2H_6) at 200 °C. Based on our present results, we propose that the Li -2B - (12)H_(12) formation in the desorption of LiBH_4 can be explained as a result of reaction of diborane and LiBH_4. This reaction of the borohydride with diborane may also be observed for other borohydrides, where B_(12)H_(12) phases are found during decomposition

BPS D-branes from an Unstable D-brane in a Curved Background

We find exact tachyon kink solutions of DBI type effective action describing an unstable D5-brane with worldvolume gauge field turned on in a curved background. The background of interest is the ten-dimensional lift of the Salam-Sezgin vacuum and, in the asymptotic limit, it approaches R1,4Ă—T2Ă—S3{\rm R}^{1,4}\times {\rm T}^2\times {\rm S}^3. The solutions are identified as composites of lower-dimensional D-branes and fundamental strings, and, in the BPS limit, they become a D4D2F1 composite wrapped on R1,2Ă—T2{\rm R}^{1,2}\times {\rm T}^2 where T2{\rm T}^2 is inside S3{\rm S}^3. In one class of solutions we find an infinite degeneracy with respect to a constant magnetic field along the direction of NS-NS field on S3{\rm S}^3.Comment: 16 pages, 2 figures, a footnote added, typos corrected and a reference adde

A Quantitative Framework Of Skill Evaluation of IT Workforce

    Get PDF
Every employee has different abilities as well as experience, leading to different results in terms of skills and job performance. In order to improve employee IT skills, organizations should evaluate their employees\u27 skills to understand the current levels of skills and knowledge and to figure out areas where skills are currently lacking. This study used a different approach than other existing methods to evaluate the IT skills of employees. The research used quantitative empirical data that represents the work experience of employees based on their task history and job positions. The suggested method defines the relationship between IT skills and IT task activities and between IT skills and job positions. The numerical analysis method was made and used to calculate scores that express the level of work experience and skills of employees. A tool was developed with computer programming in order to embody the method and make the best use of the method, and case studies were performed in order to test the validity of the method with three cases. According to results of the case study, the same or similar skills were estimated in accordance with the same or similar work experience

Variational study of a two-level system coupled to a harmonic oscillator in a ultrastrong coupling regime

The nonclassical behaviors of a two-level system coupled to a harmonic oscillator is investigated in the ultrastrong coupling regime. We revisit the variational solution of the ground state and find that the existing solution do not account accurately for nonclassical effects such squeezing. We suggest a new trial wave function and demonstrate that it has an excellent accuracy on the quantum correlation effects as well as on energy.Comment: 4 pages; 3 figures; to appear in Phys. Rev.

BPS D-branes from an Unstable D-brane

We search for exact tachyon kink solutions of DBI type effective action describing an unstable D-brane with worldvolume gauge field turned in both the flat and a curved background. There are various kinds of solutions in the presence of electromagnetic fields in the flat space, such as periodic arrays, topological tachyon kinks, half kinks, and bounces. We identify a BPS object, D(pp-1)F1 bound state, which describes a thick brane with string flux density. The curved background of interest is the ten-dimensional lift of the Salam-Sezgin vacuum and, in the asymptotic limit, it approaches R1,4Ă—T2Ă—S3{\rm R}^{1,4}\times {\rm T}^2\times {\rm S}^3. The solutions in the curved background are identified as composites of lower-dimensional D-branes and fundamental strings, and, in the BPS limit, they become a D4D2F1 composite wrapped on R1,2Ă—T2{\rm R}^{1,2}\times {\rm T}^2 where T2{\rm T}^2 is inside S3{\rm S}^3.Comment: 4 pages, to appear in the proceeding of PASCOS 2005, Gyeongju, Korea, May 30-June 4, 200

Observational constraints on a unified dark matter and dark energy model based on generalized Chaplygin gas

We study a generalized version of Chaplygin gas as unified model of dark matter and dark energy. Using realistic theoretical models and the currently available observational data from the age of the universe, the expansion history based on the type Ia supernovae, the matter power spectrum, the cosmic microwave background radiation anisotropy power spectra, and the perturbation growth factor we put the unified model under observational test. As the model has only two free parameters in the flat Friedmann background [Λ\LambdaCDM (cold dark matter) model has only one free parameter] we show that the model is already tightly constrained by currently available observations. The only parameter space extremely close to the Λ\LambdaCDM model is allowed in this unified model.Comment: 7 pages, 9 figure

Lines on projective varieties and applications

The first part of this note contains a review of basic properties of the variety of lines contained in an embedded projective variety and passing through a general point. In particular we provide a detailed proof that for varieties defined by quadratic equations the base locus of the projective second fundamental form at a general point coincides, as a scheme, with the variety of lines. The second part concerns the problem of extending embedded projective manifolds, using the geometry of the variety of lines. Some applications to the case of homogeneous manifolds are included.Comment: 15 pages. One example removed; one remark and some references added; typos correcte

Head Trajectory Diagrams for Gait Symmetry Analysis Using a Single Head-Worn IMU

    Get PDF
Gait symmetry analysis plays an important role in the diagnosis and rehabilitation of pathological gait. Recently, wearable devices have also been developed for simple gait analysis solutions. However, measurement in clinical settings can differ from gait in daily life, and simple wearable devices are restricted to a few parameters, providing one-sided trajectories of one arm or leg. Therefore, head-worn devices with sensors (e.g., earbuds) should be considered to analyze gait symmetry because the head sways towards the left and right side depending on steps. This paper proposed new visualization methods using head-worn sensors, able to facilitate gait symmetry analysis outside as well as inside. Data were collected with an inertial measurement unit (IMU) based motion capture system when twelve participants walked on the 400-m running track. From head trajectories on the transverse and frontal plane, three types of diagrams were displayed, and five concepts of parameters were measured for gait symmetry analysis. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of step counting was lower than 0.65%, representing the reliability of measured parameters. The methods enable also left-right step recognition (MAPE ≤ 2.13%). This study can support maintenance and relearning of a balanced healthy gait in various areas with simple and easy-to-use devices
