Feedback in the Antennae Galaxies (NGC 4038/9): I. High-Resolution Infrared Spectroscopy of Winds from Super Star Clusters
We present high-resolution (R ~ 24,600) near-IR spectroscopy of the youngest
super star clusters (SSCs) in the prototypical starburst merger, the Antennae
Galaxies. These SSCs are young (3-7 Myr old) and massive (10^5 - 10^7 M_sun for
a Kroupa IMF) and their spectra are characterized by broad, extended Br-gamma
emission, so we refer to them as emission-line clusters (ELCs) to distinguish
them from older SSCs. The Brgamma lines of most ELCs have supersonic widths
(60-110 km/s FWHM) and non-Gaussian wings whose velocities exceed the clusters'
escape velocities. This high-velocity unbound gas is flowing out in winds that
are powered by the clusters' massive O and W-R stars over the course of at
least several crossing times. The large sizes of some ELCs relative to those of
older SSCs may be due to expansion caused by these outflows; many of the ELCs
may not survive as bound stellar systems, but rather dissipate rapidly into the
field population. The observed tendency of older ELCs to be more compact than
young ones is consistent with the preferential survival of the most
concentrated clusters at a given age.Comment: Accepted to Ap
Exact Fermi-edge singularity exponent in a Luttinger liquid
We report the exact calculation of the Fermi-edge singularity exponent for
correlated electrons in one dimension (Luttinger liquid). Focusing on the
special interaction parameter g=1/2, the asymptotic long-time behavior can be
obtained using the Wiener-Hopf method. The result confirms the previous
assumption of an open boundary fixed point. In addition, a dynamic k-channel
Kondo impurity is studied via Abelian bosonization for k=2 and k=4. It is shown
that the corresponding orthogonality exponents are related to the orthogonality

The Mid-IR Properties of Starburst Galaxies from Spitzer-IRS Spectroscopy
We present 5-38um mid-infrared spectra at a spectral resolution of R~65-130
of a large sample of 22 starburst nuclei taken with the Infrared Spectrograph
IRS on board the Spitzer Space Telescope. The spectra show a vast range in
starburst SEDs. The silicate absorption ranges from essentially no absorption
to heavily obscured systems with an optical depth of tau(9.8um)~5. The spectral
slopes can be used to discriminate between starburst and AGN powered sources.
The monochromatic continuum fluxes at 15um and 30um enable a remarkably
accurate estimate of the total infrared luminosity of the starburst. We find
that the PAH equivalent width is independent of the total starburst luminosity
L_IR as both continuum and PAH feature scale proportionally. However, the
luminosity of the 6.2um feature scales with L_IR and can be used to approximate
the total infrared luminosity of the starburst. Although our starburst sample
covers about a factor of ten difference in the [NeIII]/[NeII] ratio, we found
no systematic correlation between the radiation field hardness and the PAH
equivalent width or the 7.7um/11.3um PAH ratio. These results are based on
spatially integrated diagnostics over an entire starburst region, and local
variations may be ``averaged out''. It is presumably due to this effect that
unresolved starburst nuclei with significantly different global properties

Ombrotrophic peatlands are a recognized global carbon reservoir. Without restoration and peat regrowth, harvested peatlands are dramatically altered, impairing its carbon sink function, with consequences for methane turnover. Previous studies determined the impact of commercial mining on the peat physico-chemical properties, and the effects on methane turnover. However, the response of the underlying microbial communities catalyzing methane production and oxidation have so far received little attention. We hypothesize that with the return of Sphagnum post-harvest, methane turnover potentials and the corresponding microbial communities will converge in a natural and restored peatland. To address our hypothesis, we determined the potential methane production and oxidation rates in a natural (as a reference), actively mined, abandoned, and restored peatland over two consecutive years. In all sites, the methanogenic and methanotrophic population size were enumerated using qPCR assays targeting the mcrA and pmoA genes, respectively. Shifts in the community composition was determined using Illumina MiSeq sequencing of the mcrA gene, and a pmoA-based t-RFLP analysis, complemented by cloning and sequence analysis of the mmoX gene. Peat mining adversely affected methane turnover potentials, but rates recovered in the restored site. The recovery in potential activity was reflected in the methanogenic and methanotrophic abundances. However, the microbial community composition was altered, more pronounced for the methanotrophs. Overall, we observed a lag between the recovery of the methanogenic/methanotrophic activity and the return of the corresponding microbial communities, suggesting a longer duration (>15 years) is needed to reverse mining-induced effects on the methane-cycling microbial communities
Photoluminescence investigations of 2D hole Landau levels in p-type single Al_{x}Ga_{1-x}As/GaAs heterostructures
We study the energy structure of two-dimensional holes in p-type single
Al_{1-x}Ga_{x}As/GaAs heterojunctions under a perpendicular magnetic field.
Photoluminescence measurments with low densities of excitation power reveal
rich spectra containing both free and bound-carrier transitions. The
experimental results are compared with energies of valence-subband Landau
levels calculated using a new numerical procedure and a good agreement is
achieved. Additional lines observed in the energy range of free-carrier
recombinations are attributed to excitonic transitions. We also consider the

Identifying Ligand Binding Conformations of the β2-Adrenergic Receptor by Using Its Agonists as Computational Probes
Recently available G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR) structures and biophysical studies suggest that the difference between the effects of various agonists and antagonists cannot be explained by single structures alone, but rather that the conformational ensembles of the proteins need to be considered. Here we use an elastic network model-guided molecular dynamics simulation protocol to generate an ensemble of conformers of a prototypical GPCR, β2-adrenergic receptor (β2AR). The resulting conformers are clustered into groups based on the conformations of the ligand binding site, and distinct conformers from each group are assessed for their binding to known agonists of β2AR. We show that the select ligands bind preferentially to different predicted conformers of β2AR, and identify a role of β2AR extracellular region as an allosteric binding site for larger drugs such as salmeterol. Thus, drugs and ligands can be used as "computational probes" to systematically identify protein conformers with likely biological significance. © 2012 Isin et al

This paper presents the basic concepts and the module structure of the Distributed and Unified Numerics Environment and reflects on recent developments and general changes that happened since the release of the first Dune version in 2007 and the main papers describing that state Bastian etal. (2008a, 2008b). This discussion is accompanied with a description of various advanced features, such as coupling of domains and cut cells, grid modifications such as adaptation and moving domains, high order discretizations and node level performance, non-smooth multigrid methods, and multiscale methods.
