    Minimal AdS-Lorentz supergravity in three-dimensions

    The N=1\mathcal{N}=1 AdS-Lorentz superalgebra is studied and its relationship to semigroup expansion developed. Using this mathematical tool, the invariant tensors and Casimir operators are found. In terms of these invariants, a three-dimensionnal Chern--Simons supergravity action with AdS-Lorentz symmetry is constructed.     Permeabilizing action of an antimicrobial lactoferricin-derived peptide on bacterial and artificial membranes

    AbstractA synthetic peptide (23 residues) that includes the antibacterial and lipopolysaccharide-binding regions of human lactoferricin, an antimicrobial sequence of lactoferrin, was used to study its action on cytoplasmic membrane of Escherichia coli 0111 and E. coli phospholipid vesicles. The peptide caused a depolarization of the bacterial cytoplasmic membrane, loss of the pH gradient, and a bactericidal effect on E. coli. Similarly, the binding of the peptide to liposomes dissipated previously created transmembrane electrical and pH gradients. The dramatic consequences of the transmembrane ion flux during the peptide exposure indicate that the adverse effect on bacterial cells occurs at the bacterial inner membrane

    Carpal tunnel syndrome associated with oral bisphosphonates. A population-based cohort study

Some severe musculoskeletal reactions have been described with this medication; among them, some cases of carpal tunnel syndrome. Thus, the aim of this study was to explore whether bisphosphonates may be associated with this syndrome. Methods: A cohort study was conducted to compare exposed to unexposed women; the exposed group was that composed of women having received at least one prescription of an oral bisphosphonate. For the purpose, we used information from The Health Improvement Network (THIN) database. The outcome of interest was defined as those women diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome. A survival analysis was performed; the Cox proportional hazard model was used to calculate hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals, and to adjust for identified confounding variables. Results: Out of a sample of 59,475 women older than 51 years, 19,825 were treated with bisphosphonates during the period studied. No differences in age distribution or mean follow-up time were observed between the two groups in comparison. Overall, there were 572 women diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome, 242 (1.2%) in the group exposed to bisphosphonates, and 330 (0.8%) in the unexposed. An adjusted hazard ratio of developing carpal tunnel syndrome of 1.38 (95%CI, 1.15-1.64) was found for women exposed to bisphosphonates; no significant changes in the hazard ratios were found when considering different levels of bisphosphonate exposure

    Summary. Heterotrimeric G protein signaling regulates many processes in fungi, such as development, pathogenicity, and secondary metabolite biosynthesis. For example, the Gα subunit Pga1 from Penicillium chrysogenum regulates conidiation and secondary metabolite production in this fungus. The dominant activating allele, pga1G42R, encoding a constitutively active Pga1 Gα subunit, was introduced in Penicillium roqueforti by transformation, resulting in a phenotype characterized by low sporulation and slow growth. In this work, the effect of the constitutively active Pga1G42R Gα subunit on conidial germination, stress tolerance, and roquefortine C production of P. roqueforti was studied. Pga1G42R triggered germination in the absence of a carbon source, in addition to negatively regulating thermal and osmotic stress tolerance. The presence of the Pga1G42R Gα subunit also had an important effect on roquefortine C biosynthesis, increasing production and maintaining high levels of the mycotoxin throughout a culture period of 30 days. Together, the results suggest that G protein-mediated signaling participates in the regulation of these three processes in P. roqueforti. [Int Microbiol 2009; 12(2):123-129

    Electrochemical comparison between IrO2 prepared by anodic oxidation of pure iridium and IrO2 prepared by thermal decomposition of H2IrC16 precursor solution

    Surface redox activities, oxygen evolution reaction (OER), oxidation of formic acid (FA), and anodic stability were investigated and compared for IrO2 electrodes prepared by two techniques: the thermal decomposition of H2IrCl6 precursor (TDIROF) and the anodic oxidation of metallic iridium (AIROF). Surface redox activities involved on the AIROF were found to be much faster than those involved on the TDIROF. Concerning the oxygen evolution reaction, both films show a similar mechanism and specific electrocatalytic activities. The situation seems to be different for FA oxidation. In fact, on TDIROF, the oxidation of FA and the OER compete involving the same surface redox couple Ir(VI)/Ir(IV) contrary to FA oxidation on AIROF, where the Ir(V)/Ir(IV) surface redox couple is involved. Finally, electrode stability measurements have shown that contrary to TDIROF, which are very stable under anodic polarization, the AIROF are rapidly corroded under anodic treatment.     The effect of inulin and probiotic bacteria on the growth, survival, immune response and viral prevalence of white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) in white shrimp was evaluated. Presumptive bacilli and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were characterized for hemolytic and enzymatic activity, hydrophobicity and antagonism against Vibrio. Selected isolates (Bacilli and LAB) were included in the diet of juvenile shrimp. Two bioassays were conducted with treatments by triplicate (10 shrimp per replicate) with inulin and inulin and bacteria. Fourteen LAB and six bacilli isolates had potential as probiotics. Survival and growth was not affected by the addition of the inulin and bacteria to diet. Inulin and bacteria improved immunity in cultured shrimp.     Senescent cells limit p53 activity via multiple mechanisms to remain viable

    Super-enhancers regulate genes with important functions in processes that are cell type-specific or define cell identity. Mouse embryonic fibroblasts establish 40 senescence-associated super-enhancers regardless of how they become senescent, with 50 activated genes located in the vicinity of these enhancers. Here we show, through gene knockdown and analysis of three core biological properties of senescent cells that a relatively large number of senescence-associated super-enhancer-regulated genes promote survival of senescent mouse embryonic fibroblasts. Of these, Mdm2, Rnase4, and Ang act by suppressing p53-mediated apoptosis through various mechanisms that are also engaged in response to DNA damage. MDM2 and RNASE4 transcription is also elevated in human senescent fibroblasts to restrain p53 and promote survival. These insights identify key survival mechanisms of senescent cells and provide molecular entry points for the development of targeted therapeutics that eliminate senescent cells at sites of pathology.</p
