Making Meaning of IB Approaches to Teaching and Learning: A Phenomenological Study of Teachers’ Experiences Implementing the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

    Get PDF
The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore how teachers perceive, make meaning of, and implement the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). Best practices for effectively implementing the IBDP were also explored. A total of 10 teachers and coordinators who were new to IBDP and had implemented the program since 2015 were interviewed. These educators were outside their home countries in Macao, Malaysia, Qatar, and Turkey. The study was designed to answer two research questions. RQ 1 asked, How do teachers perceive, make meaning of, and individually construct their implementation of the IBDP according to Knowles et al.’s (2015) principles of andragogy? RQ 2 asked, What factors do teachers believe best contribute to their implementation of the IBDP? Nine themes emerged from the data analysis: value of the IBDP, understanding assessment, mentoring, collaboration, effective training, continuous reading, insecurity of assessment, applying and refining new knowledge through practice, and time. The strong need for collaboration and mentoring has been clearly articulated by the participants. There is a definite need for more research about the topic of IBDP implementation. However, this study begins to explore the elements of perceiving and making meaning of the IBDP, and suggests strategies for effectively implementing the IBDP while giving voice to the practitioners who do already implement the IBDP

Mapping the wavefunction of transition metal acceptor states in the GaAs surface

We utilize a single atom substitution technique with spectroscopic imaging in a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) to visualize the anisotropic spatial structure of magnetic and non-magnetic transition metal acceptor states in the GaAs (110) surface. The character of the defect states play a critical role in the properties of the semiconductor, the localization of the states influencing such things as the onset of the metal-insulator transition, and in dilute magnetic semiconductors the mechanism and strength of magnetic interactions that lead to the emergence of ferromagnetism. We study these states in the GaAs surface finding remarkable similarities between the shape of the acceptor state wavefunction for Mn, Fe, Co and Zn dopants, which is determined by the GaAs host and is generally reproduced by tight binding calculations of Mn in bulk GaAs [Tang, J.M. & Flatte, M.E., Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 047201 (2004)]. The similarities originate from the antibonding nature of the acceptor states that arise from the hybridization of the impurity d-levels with the host. A second deeper in-gap state is also observed for Fe and Co that can be explained by the symmetry breaking of the surface.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figure

    Tractor plow adjustment and operation

    Get PDF
Plowing is an art, and good plowing is the pride of every farmer. A good job of plowing is apparent even to the casual observer. A well-adjusted plow will do better work, have lighter draft, give less wear on plow parts, and will make the tractor easier to operate than a poorly set plow. Most plows are received from the factory “knocked down,” and must be set up and adjusted before being used. Variations in plowing conditions may make frequent plow adjustments necessary. Most modern tractor plows have all adjustments necessary to set the plow properly. When properly set, a plow should do a good job under usual plowing conditions. If a poor plowing job is done with a tractor plow, it is usually traceable to improper adjustment or extremely unfavorable plowing conditions. In most cases, failure to do first-class plowing results from careless adjustments or lack of knowledge as to how to set the plow. Because of the many different kinds of mounted plows, this bulletin deals principally with the “pulled” type moldboard tractor plow

Greening Louisville\u27s East Market District : a comparative assessment of sustainability.

    Get PDF
The East Market District located in Louisville, KY is currently undergoing a multi-million dollar urban regeneration. This transformation is being marketed as a primer sustainable neighborhood with the goal of serving as a model for other cities in the United States. As result of these changes, it is imperative to analyze the concept of sustainability from a variety of stakeholder perspectives utilizing content analysis on interviews and LEED Neighborhood Scorecard. Utilizing these methods, the central goal of this study is to understand the various interpretation of sustainability within this neighborhood. The findings observed via the critical assessment of the LEED Neighborhood Scorecard, showed that the criterion for which neighborhood sustainable development is judged is socially focused. This paralleled with the occupant’s vision of a socially-based sustainable environment, which is in conflict with that of the constructors. These disparate findings reveal issues underlying sustainable development

Method of forming magnetostrictive rods from rare earth-iron alloys

    Get PDF
Rods of magnetrostructive alloys of iron with rare earth elements are formed by flowing a body of rare earth-iron alloy in a crucible enclosed in a chamber maintained under an inert gas atmosphere, forcing such molten rare-earth-iron alloy into a hollow mold tube of refractory material positioned with its lower end portion within the molten body by means of a pressure differential between the chamber and mold tube and maintaining a portion of the molten alloy in the crucible extending to a level above the lower end of the mold tube so that solid particles of higher melting impurities present in the alloy collect at the surface of the molten body and remain within the crucible as the rod is formed in the mold tube
