    Electronic structure of crystalline binary and ternary Cd-Te-O compounds

    The electronic structure of crystalline CdTe, CdO, α\alpha-TeO2_2, CdTeO3_3 and Cd3_3TeO6_6 is studied by means of first principles calculations. The band structure, total and partial density of states, and charge densities are presented. For α\alpha-TeO2_2 and CdTeO3_3, Density Functional Theory within the Local Density Approximation (LDA) correctly describes the insulating character of these compounds. In the first four compounds, LDA underestimates the optical bandgap by roughly 1 eV. Based on this trend, we predict an optical bandgap of 1.7 eV for Cd3_3TeO6_6. This material shows an isolated conduction band with a low effective mass, thus explaining its semiconducting character observed recently. In all these oxides, the top valence bands are formed mainly from the O 2p electrons. On the other hand, the binding energy of the Cd 4d band, relative to the valence band maximum, in the ternary compounds is smaller than in CdTe and CdO.Comment: 13 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables.     Re-Imagining Higher Education Institutions as Inclusive Entrepreneurial Entities: the Case of European University of Technology (EUt+)

    The requirement to transform higher education institutions (HEIs) to become inclusive entrepreneurial entities is underpinned by policy and by changes over past decades on the role and linkages of universities to their environment. This paper aims to understand how HEIs are transforming as inclusive entrepreneurial entities using the European University of Technology (EUt+) as a case in practice. The study draws on a conceptual framework developed by O’Brien, Cooney and Blenker (2019) for expanding university entrepreneurial ecosystems to under-represented communities. The framework is used to identify points of decision and action as well as to identify tools and instruments that can capture data as EUt+ progresses. The contribution of this paper provides firstly, a preliminary insight into how EUt+ as a European University Alliance is progressing as an inclusive entrepreneurial HEI and secondly, progresses the O’Brien, Cooney and Blenker (2019) framework from conceptual to practice, in particular on monitoring and evaluation of the inclusive entrepreneurial HEI

    Structure and magnetism of single-phase epitaxial γ′-Fe4N

    Single phase epitaxial pure γ′-Fe4N films are grown on MgO (001) by molecular beam epitaxy of iron in the presence of nitrogen obtained from a radio frequency atomic source. The epitaxial, single phase nature of the films is revealed by x-ray diffraction and by the local magnetic environment investigated by Mössbauer spectroscopy. The macroscopic magnetic properties of the γ′-Fe4N films are studied in detail by means of transverse Kerr effect measurements. The hysteresis loops are consistent with the cubic atomic structure, displaying easy [100] magnetization directions. The films are single domain at remanence, and the reversal is dominated by 180° or 90° domain wall nucleation and propagation, depending on the applied field direction. When 90° domain walls are responsible for the magnetization reversal, this proceeds in two stages, and the measured coercive fields vary accordingly. Magnetic domain observations reveal the two distinct reversal —driven by 180° or 90° domain walls— modes displaying large domains, of the order of mm. From magnetometer techniques, the saturation magnetization, μ0Ms, is measured to be 1.8 T. A magneto-optical torque technique is used to obtain a value of the anisotropy constant of 2.9×104J/m3.The authors acknowledge partial financing from EC project HIDEMAR G5RD-CT-2002-00731 and PHANTOMS network.     Pre-service Teachers’ Readiness on Online Learning and their 21st Century Pedagogical Skills

    This study looked at the online learning readiness and 21st century pedagogical skills among pre-service teachers of a state university in the Philippines during the school year 2021-2022. The descriptive-correlational method was applied through an adapted survey questionnaire administered to 28 pre-service teachers. The findings revealed that pre-service teachers were ready for online learning in terms of computer/internet self-efficacy, self-directed learning, learner control, motivation for learning, and online communication self-efficacy. They were also equipped with 21st century pedagogical skills such as information and communication technology skills, life-long learning skills, flexibility skills, creative problem-solving skills, and critical thinking skills. The findings also indicated a substantial relationship between the pre-service teachers’ readiness in online learning and their 21st century pedagogical skills. The study suggests that universities may create appropriate provisions to provide their faculty members with the necessary professional development training opportunities to raise awareness and improve e-pedagogical skills

    Molecular data confirms the existence of distinct lineages within Lumbricus friendi (Cognetti 1904) and related “friends”

    Lumbricus friendi is a lumbricid earthworm mainly found in western Europe, considerably less well studied than its close relative L. terrestris and until now, has not been a subject of taxonomical debate. However, its disjointed geographical distribution suggesting striking similarities to the Celtic fringes and of the so-called “Lusitanian” species merits further investigation. Our aim was to examine the genetic variation of this species and other related taxa within the genus (L. terrestris, L. rubellus, L. rubellus friendoides and L. friendi bouchei) to test for the existence of cryptic lineages that might explain its current distribution. Using mitochondrial (16S and COI) and nuclear (Amplified Fragment Length Polymorphism, AFLP) markers, we provide the first genetic basis not only to support the recent claim that L. friendi bouchei should be elevated to species rank (L. bouchei Zicsi and Csuzdi 1999), but also to conclude that L. rubellus friendoides is a valid species too, deserving a new name (L. heracleus stat. nov.). In addition, the AFLP results indicated the existence of a high cryptic diversity within L. friendi populations, which lacked geographic structure, resulting in the French samples being genetically closer to those from Ireland and Wales than to the Spanish ones. Our findings further highlight the likelihood that L. friendi and L. bouchei might have been overlooked or confounded with L. terrestris/L. herculeus and question the reliability of L. friendi records reported in the literature and those deposited in museums and sequence libraries (we provide evidence that this seem to be the case with two examples). We therefore advocate for a better link between morphological diagnostic characters and molecular sequences and the taxonomical validation of museums’ collections and sequence repositories

    Biallelic deleterious germline SH2B3 variants cause a novel syndrome of myeloproliferation and multi-organ autoimmunity

    SH2B3 is a negative regulator of multiple cytokine receptor signalling pathways in haematopoietic tissue. To date, a single kindred has been described with germline biallelic loss-of-function SH2B3 variants characterized by early onset developmental delay, hepatosplenomegaly and autoimmune thyroiditis/hepatitis. Herein, we described two further unrelated kindreds with germline biallelic loss-of-function SH2B3 variants that show striking phenotypic similarity to each other as well as to the previous kindred of myeloproliferation and multi-organ autoimmunity. One proband also suffered severe thrombotic complications. CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing of zebrafish sh2b3 created assorted deleterious variants in F0 crispants, which manifest significantly increased number of macrophages and thrombocytes, partially replicating the human phenotype. Treatment of the sh2b3 crispant fish with ruxolitinib intercepted this myeloproliferative phenotype. Skin-derived fibroblasts from one patient demonstrated increased phosphorylation of JAK2 and STAT5 after stimulation with IL-3, GH, GM-CSF and EPO compared to healthy controls. In conclusion, these additional probands and functional data in combination with the previous kindred provide sufficient evidence for biallelic homozygous deleterious variants in SH2B3 to be considered a valid gene-disease association for a clinical syndrome of bone marrow myeloproliferation and multi-organ autoimmune manifestations

    Size and dimensionality effects in superconducting Mo thin films

    Molybdenum is a low Tc, type I superconductor whose fundamental properties are poorly known. Its importance as an essential constituent of new high performance radiation detectors, the so-called transition edge sensors (TESs) calls for better characterization of this superconductor, especially in thin film form. Here we report on a study of the basic superconducting features of Mo thin films as a function of their thickness. The resistivity is found to rise and the critical temperature decreases on decreasing film thickness, as expected. More relevant, the critical fields along and perpendicular to the film plane are markedly different, thickness dependent and much larger than the thermodynamic critical field of Mo bulk. These results are consistent with a picture of type II 2D superconducting films, and allow estimates of the fundamental superconducting lengths of Mo. The role of morphology in determining the 2D and type II character of the otherwise type I molybdenum is discussed.
