    Reawakening African Cultural Practices towards Global Harmony: Role of Kinship

    It is almost impossible to conceive of a people without culture for this would mean that such people do not experience or have any knowledge about the world. Culture determines the perspective or purview through which the world around a people is understood. It shapes their values, practices, behaviours, beliefs, attitudes, perceptions, and conduct. There are variations in the way Africans view the world but within these variations, several common themes are evidently visible giving room for unity in diversity. Some of these themes include the notions of motherhood, respect for constituted authority, belief in the sanctity of human life, life in the hereafter, dignity in labour, moral uprightness, need for inter-subjective living, and close-knittedness with nature. The goal of this paper is bipartite in nature. It argues on the one hand that these cultural practices which are deeply rooted in African worldview, when extended globally would contribute to global harmony. On the other hand, it observes at the same time that this present age and civilisation have lost touch with the cultural practices that are fundamental to the unity and harmony of Africa and by extension, the world, hence, the need for a reawakening of African cultural practices that are germane to global harmony. The paper intends to achieve this by cashing in on the numerous values in the practice of kinship in Africa that encourage shared values and discourage cultural prejudices as kinship is conceived to extend beyond one’s immediate family to the community and embracing the whole of humanity. However, in a paper of this length, one cannot obviously fully explore how each of the aforementioned themes will influence global harmony. Consequently, focus is here only directed on a few

    The significance of hair is deeply rooted in African ontology. It depicts leadership status and when shaved off completely, may sometimes signify mourning or lack of dignity. In Benin-city of Edo state in Nigeria, Chiefs who are mostly men are identified by their unique hair-styles. It shows their position of leadership in the society and when a king dies, all the men in the kingdom are expected to shave off their hair as a sign of respect for the departed king. In the culture of the Yoruba people of Nigeria, hair is highly celebrated by the women as it is seen as a crown of glory upon their heads. With advancement in globalisation and cross-cultural relationships, the culture of hair and its ontological significances are gradually being eroded as expressed in Chimamanda Adichie‟s „Americanah‟. For this reason, the hair, being a very important symbol of cultural identity has become a key role in understanding the issues with identity crises in Africa.     Biodegradation of p-Chloroaniline by Bacteria Isolated from Contaminated Sites

    Enrichment of water from a contaminated site in a textile industry in Ikeja resulted in the isolation of two bacteria belonging to the genera Alcaligenes and Cellulomonas. These bacteria were able to mineralize para-chloroaniline (p-chloroaniline). Time course degradation of p-chloroaniline using pure cultures of these organisms showed that p-chloroaniline supported the growth of these isolates. An initial increase in cell densities of 7.50-9.46 cfu/mL was recorded from day 0-9th day for Cellulomonas sp. while for Alcaligenes denitrificans it was 7.20-9.40 cfu/mL. After day 9, a decrease in population occurred, indicating non-availability of nutrients or toxicity of the medium. Simultaneously, a decrease in the pH, indicative of increased acidity of the medium, was also observed from the first day. The result of the GC analysis of the pure isolates on p-chloroaniline shows that 86.5% of the p-chloroaniline was degraded by the Cellulomonas sp. while 81.2% was degraded by the A. denitrificans in 30 days. These bacterial isolates utilized other hydrocarbons such as pyrene, anthracene, crude oil and chlorobenzoates as sole source of carbon and energy but not phenanthrene, naphthalene and biphenyl. The two isolates tolerated NaCl concentration of up to 5%

    Prevalence and Antibiotic Susceptibility Pattern of Staphylococcus Aureus in Clinical Specimens

    The present study was carried out to determine the prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus in clinical samples and their susceptibility pattern to antibiotics. Standard microbiological and biochemical methods were used to screen 155 clinical specimens comprising of sputum, wound, urine and high vaginal swabs for S .aureus. Twenty eight (28) isolates was obtained from these samples. Antibiotic susceptibility results shows high percentage of sensitivity to gentamicin (89%,) azithromycin (89%), pefloxacin (79%)  followed by erythromycin (68%) ciprofloxacin (61%) streptomycin (61%)and sparfloxacin (54%). A high resistance was recorded for cotrimaxazole (90%), amoxycillin (88%), ampicillin (73%), tetracycline (65%), cefuroxime and cephalexin (40%) each.     Weight gain and menstrual abnormalities between users of Depo-provera and Noristerat

    Background: Progesterone only injectable contraceptive provides long acting contraception against unwanted pregnancy. Alterations in menstrual pattern are a well known side effect of this effective contraceptive method. Objective of this study was to compare the weight gain and pattern of menstrual abnormalities in users of Depot Medroxyprogesterone Acetate (DMPA) and Norethisterone Enanthate (Noristerat) in LASUTH.Methods: Retrospective comparative study conducted over a 3year period (January 2013 to December 2015) and involving 237 subjects who used injectable hormonal contraceptive (either DMPA or Noristerat). Case records of all the subjects were retrieved and information obtained on socio-demographic data, parity, previous contraceptive method and reason for discontinuation within one year of usage. Other information including subjects’ weight, menstrual cycle length and pattern, and side effects were collected at 3, 6 and 12 months for DMPA group and 2, 4 and 12 months interval for Noristerat group. Data obtained were analyzed using statistical packages for social sciences (version 19).Results: The combined mean age was 34.15±1.36 years. The mean weight at commencement was 68.16kg for DMPA and 66.61kg for Noristerat users while after a year, it significantly increased to 71.27kg for DMPA and 69.07kg for Noristerat users (P<0.05). No change in menstrual pattern was noted in 10% of DMPA and 7% of Noristerat users while 60% of DMPA and 57% of Noristerat had amenorrhoea by the end one year period. Five percent each of DMPA and Noristerat users perceived weight gain as problem significant enough to discontinue both methods respectively. Overall, 24% of DMPA and 19.1% of Noristerat users discontinued use after one year.Conclusions: There were significant weight gain between users of DMPA and Noristerat which was not considered a problem. Amenorrhoea was the commonest menstrual abnormality responsible for discontinuation of either method

    Partial Purification, Characterization and Application of Bacteriocin from Bacteria Isolated Parkia biglobosa Seeds

    Staff PublicationBacteriocins are proteinaceous toxins produced by bacteria to inhibit the growth of similar or closely related bacterial strains. Fermented Parkia biglobosa seeds (African locust bean) were screened for bacteriocin-producing lactic acid bacteria (LAB) with the characterization of putative bacteriocins. Bacteriocin-producing lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were identified by 16s rDNA sequencing. Molecular sizes of the bacteriocins were determined using the tricine-sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (tricine-SDS–PAGE) and effects of enzymes, pH, detergents and temperature on bacteriocin activity investigated, using standard procedures. Bacteriocins production and activities were measured by spectrophotometric analysis. Statistical analysis was carried out using student t-test and Analyses of Variance. Bacteriocigenic LAB isolated were Lactobacillus plantarum Z1116, Enterococcus faecium AU02 and Leuconostoc lactis PKT0003. They inhibited the growth of both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The sizes of bacteriocins Z1116, AU02 and PKT0003 were 3.2 kDa, 10 kDa and 10 kDa, respectively. The synergistic effects of characterized bacteriocins and rifampicin tested on organisms showed significant differences (P < 0.05), as compared with the effects of only one of the two. The antimicrobial activity of the three bacteriocins was deactivated after treatment of the cell-free supernatants with proteinase K, papain, pepsin and trypsin. Parkia biglobosa seeds are, therefore, rich in LAB bacteriocins which could be explored. The biosynthetic mechanisms of LAB bacteriocins could be employed in food safety and security, preservation, peptide design, infection control and pharmacotherapy. This should help in the control of undesirable bacteria and in designing more potent and selective antimicrobial peptides
