    Revisiting digital technologies: envisioning biodigital bodies

    In this paper the contemporary practices of human genomics in the 21st century are placed alongside the digital bodies of the 1990s. The primary aim is to provide a trajectory of the biodigital as follows: First, digital bodies and biodigital bodies were both part of the spectacular imaginaries of early cybercultures. Second, these spectacular digital bodies were supplemented in the mid-1990s by digital bodywork practices that have become an important dimension of everyday communication. Third, the spectacle of biodigital bodies is in the process of being supplemented by biodigital bodywork practices, through personal or direct-to-consumer genomics. This shift moves a form of biodigital communication into the everyday. Finally, what can be learned from putting the trajectories of digital and biodigital bodies together is that the degree of this communicative shift may be obscured through the doubled attachment of personal genomics to everyday digital culture and high-tech spectacle.Keywords: genomics, biodigital, bodies, spectacle, everyda

    Deprivation as an outcome determinant in emergency medical admissions

    Background: Deprivation in the general population predicts mortality. We have investigated its relevance to an acute medical admission, using a database of all emergency admissions to St James’ Hospital, Dublin, over a ten year period (2002-2011). <p/>Methods: All emergency admissions, based on geocoding of residence, were allocated to a Small Area Health Research Unit (SAHRU) division, with a corresponding deprivation index. We then examined this index as a univariate (unadjusted) and independent (adjusted) predictor of 30-day in-hospital mortality. <p/>Results: The 30-day in-hospital mortality, over the 10 year period was higher, for those in the upper half of the deprivation distribution (9.6% vs 8.6%: p = 0.002). Indeed, there was a stepwise increase in 30-day mortality over the quintiles of deprivation from 7.3% (Quintile 1) to 8.8%, 10.0%, 10.0% and 9.3% respectively. Univariate logistic regression of the deprivation indices (quintiles) against outcome showed an increased risk (p = 0.002) of a 30-day death with OR’s respectively (compared with lowest deprivation quintile) of 1.23 (95% CI 1.07, 1.40), 1.41 (95% CI 1.24, 1.60), 1.41 (95% CI 1.24, 1.61) and 1.30 (95% CI 1.14, 1.48). The deprivation index was an independent predictor of outcome in a model when adjusted for illness severity and co-morbidity. The fully adjusted OR for a 30-day death was increased by 31% (p=0.001) for patients in the upper half of the deprivation index distribution (OR 1.31: 95% CI 1.20, 1.44). <p/>Conclusion: Deprivation independently of co-morbidity or acute illness severity is a powerful outcome predictor in acute medical admissions

    Digital Intimacies and LGBT+ Youth: Celebration, Equity and Safety

    “Digital Intimacies and LGBT+ youth” was commissioned by Brook, the wellbeing and sexual health charity for under-25s. It builds on the insights of its earlier report Digital Romance (McGeeney and Hanson 2017) which researched young people’s digital intimacy practices. For this report, we revisited survey and focus group data specifically from LGBT+ participants in that research. Additionally, we reviewed academic literature and gathered new data from LGBT+ youth groups, youth work practitioners and teachers, and parents / carers. Our research took place during the period of lockdowns due to Covid-19. These induced rapid shifts in perceptions of the online and in youth work practices, which have shaped our analysis here. The report summarises its findings under the headings of: // Celebration: We acknowledge the positive experiences that LGBT+ youth have online. We recognise LGBT+ youth as engaged creatively in diverse practices of community-building across many digital and offline spaces. Although there may be some (real and imagined) generational gaps in appreciating the value of digital cultures, we describe how youth work professionals rapidly and flexibly adapted their work with young people to online spaces under lockdown. Evidence that youth work practices were in turn able to positively impact some young people’s online relationship-building shows the value and vitality of cross-generational work and spaces. // Equity: We acknowledge the particular challenges faced by LGBT+ youth in a heteronormative world, which require specific resources to ameliorate. Some of these resources – especially for LGBT+ friendly youth services and other provision – are inadequate and / or under threat. Young people in our research looked particularly to schools to create safe and inclusive spaces including through relationships and sexuality education. We also draw attention to the responsibilities of platform providers, since many features of internet architecture prioritise commercial imperatives above privacy, preventing online harassment, or access to information. // Safety: We acknowledge the particular issues faced by LGBT+ youth in forging relationships and identities and their need for support. These intersect with many different aspects of identity. However we argue that an overemphasis on risk can be alienating and counterproductive, especially if it comes at the expense of more positive representations. Risk-taking is a necessary part of growing and learning. Managing risk should be seen as a lifelong project for all of us, constantly revisited, rather than something that can be avoided entirely or achieved at a single point in time. We conclude by offering a set of recommendations for practice relevant to funding bodies, campaigners, youth work professionals, schools, families and carers. These relate to: • Inclusive Relationships and Sex(uality) Education • Inclusive online safety • Resourcing anti-harassment strategies • Demanding more from digital media providers • Actively supporting parents and carers • Creating and networking safe spaces • Supporting youth community spaces • Supporting creativity/world-making • Outreach and exchang

    MoviCompile : An LLVM based compiler for heterogeneous SIMD code generation

    Numerous applications in communication and multimedia domains show significant data-level parallelism (DLP). The amount of DLP varies between applications in the same domain or even within a single application. Most architectures support a single vector-, SIMD-width which may not be optimal. This may cause performance and energy inefficiency. We propose the use of multiple (heterogeneous) vector-widths to better serve applications with varying DLP. The SHAVE (Streaming Hybrid Architecture Vector Engine) VLIW vector processor shown in Figure 1 is an example of such an architecture. SHAVE is a unique VLIW processor that provides hardware support for native 32-bit (short) and 128-bit (long) vector operations. Vector arithmetic unit (VAU) supports 128-bit vector arithmetic of 8/16/32-bit integer and 16/32-bit floating point types. Scalar arithmetic unit (SAU) supports 32-bit vector arithmetic of 8/16-bit integer and 16-bit floating point types. The moviCompile compiler is an LLVM based commercial compiler targeting code generation for SHAVE processor family. The moviCompile compiler is capable of SIMD code generation for 128-bit (long) and 64-bit vector operations. This work focuses on compiler backend support for 32-bit (short) vector operations. More specifically, this work aims to generate SIMD code for short vector types (e.g. 4 x i8, 2 x i16, 2 x f16) that can be executed on 32-bit SAU next to the 128/64-bit SIMD code. As a result, moviCompile is able to generate heterogeneous assembly code consisting of both short and long vector SIMD operations. Currently, we are testing the compiler using TSVC (Test Suite for Vectorizing Compilers) and intend to measure the performance improvements

    Mixed-length SIMD code generation for VLIW architectures with multiple native vector-widths

    The degree of DLP parallelism in applications is not fixed and varies due to different computational characteristics of applications. On the contrary, most of the processors today include single-width SIMD (vector) hardware to exploit DLP. However, single-width SIMD architectures may not be optimal to serve applications with varying DLP and they may cause performance and energy inefficiency. We propose the usage of VLIW processors with multiple native vector-widths to better serve applications with changing DLP. SHAVE is an example of such VLIW processor and provides hardware support for the native 32-bit and 128-bit wide vector operations. This paper researches and implements the mixed-length SIMD code generation support for SHAVE processor. More specifically, we target generating 32-bit and 128/64-bit SIMD code for the native 32-bit and 128-bit wide vector units of SHAVE processor. In this way, we improved the performance of compiler generated SIMD code by reducing the number of overhead operations and by increasing the SIMD hardware utilization. Experimental results demonstrated that our methodology implemented in the compiler improves the performance of synthetic benchmarks up to 47%

    Role of pyrite in formation of hydroxyl radicals in coal: possible implications for human health

    BACKGROUND: The harmful effects from inhalation of coal dust are well-documented. The prevalence of lung disease varies by mining region and may, in part, be related to regional differences in the bioavailable iron content of the coal. Pyrite (FeS(2)), a common inorganic component in coal, has been shown to spontaneously form reactive oxygen species (ROS) (i.e., hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radicals) and degrade nucleic acids. This raises the question regarding the potential for similar reactivity from coal that contains pyrite. Experiments were performed to specifically evaluate the role of pyrite in coal dust reactivity. Coal samples containing various amounts of FeS(2 )were compared for differences in their generation of ROS and degradation of RNA. RESULTS: Coals that contain iron also show the presence of FeS(2), generate ROS and degrade RNA. Coal samples that do not contain pyrite do not produce ROS nor degrade RNA. The concentration of generated ROS and degradation rate of RNA both increase with greater FeS(2 )content in the coals. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of coal workers' pneumoconiosis can be correlated to the amount of FeS(2 )in the coals. Considering the harmful effects of generation of ROS by inhaled particles, the results presented here show a possible mechanism whereby coal samples may contribute to CWP. This suggests that the toxicity of coal may be explained, in part, by the presence of FeS(2)
