AbstractDue to the abolishment of the Teaching and Learning of Science and Mathematics in English (PPSMI) policy by the Malaysian Cabinet in July 2009, a new policy which is called Upholding the Malay Language and Strengthening Command of English (MBMMBI) policy was introduced. Both languages have their role and importance. The Malay language has long since been the language of knowledge and unity in Malaysia, whereas English is the international communication language. This study focuses on students’ perspectives regarding the issue of the transformation from PPSMI to MBMMBI. A survey has been conducted to gather information from students who enrolled for Science and Mathematics courses. Results show that the students are taking a positive standpoint in upholding the Malay language and at the same time strengthening the command of the English language. The transformation from PPSMI to MBMMBI is hoped to generate Malaysians who are fluent and confident in both Malay and English languages

AbstractThis study was conducted to ascertain teaching Science and Mathematics in English will enhance English proficiency amongst the science stream students in UKM. The study found that the students agreed that the teaching of Science and Mathematics in English can improve their English proficiency. The results showed that teaching Science and Mathematics in English is capable of being a driven force in mastering basic English language and communication, and also in improving the explanation of the concept of Science and Mathematics in English

Students’ Inclination towards English Language as Medium of Instruction in the Teaching of Science and Mathematics

AbstractMalay language, the national language of Malaysia has been the medium of instruction for Science and Mathematics for the past four and a half decades in Malaysia. The government however changed the medium of instruction of these subjects to English in January 2003. The “Teaching and Learning of Science and Mathematics in English” (PPSMI) policy was implemented in all primary and secondary schools. It aims to improve the English language proficiency among students as well as the learning and achievement level in science and mathematics. This paper presents findings of the study on students’ inclination towards English language as medium of instruction in teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics in Higher Learning Institutions in Malaysia. The respondents were 291 undergraduate students from the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST) and Faculty of Education (FPEND) of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM). A questionnaire pertaining to students’ inclination was used as research instrument. Using descriptive statistics, ANOVA and t-test, the study found that undergraduate students of FST and FPEND had an inclination towards English as medium of instruction in the teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics. Using the Post-Hoc test, it is found that Indian students and students from other races than Malay and Chinese have greater inclination towards English as medium of instruction in teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics in UKM for both faculties. However, FST students who studied in Mandarin and Tamil at pre-university level (STPM) had higher inclination compared to those who used Malay language or even English

Multicriteria Decision Making Model For Faculty Member Selection

    No full text
The conventional process of selecting new faculty members requires great deals of evaluations and discussions by the selection committee. The implementation of a mathematically simple but comprehensive yet logical and structurally organized multi criteria decision making (MCDM) method will give a more scientific justifiable decision in the faculty member selection problem

A comparison between singular value decomposition and eigenvector method in group decision making

In any group decision making exercise, the issues of having justified and consistent decisions are always of major concerns, especially when the group members come from diverse backgrounds, selection expectations and priorities, and there are a number of selection criteria to consider. This paper looks at these issues in the faculty member selection domain where the objective is to select the best candidate to be the new faculty member. Two hypotheses are tested using two-way ANOVA; overall candidates’ ranking depends on their own performance and competencies, and overall candidates’ ranking does not depend on individual selection committee members’ different roles. Selection committee members were treated as treatment factor while the candidates as the blocking factor. Singular value decomposition (SVD) and eigenvector method (EM), two different methods in analytic hierarchy process (AHP) were used to obtain the rankings. The statistical tests showed that both SVD and EM resulted in the same conclusion, that is the overall candidates’ ranking does not depend on the difference in the selection committee members’ selection criteria preferences, but on the individual candidates’ performance and competencies. Hence, all parties can be assured of an unbiased evaluations and the selection process itself is conducted in the most professional manner

Singular value decomposition VS duality approach in AHP: Time and rank comparisons in faculty member selection

    No full text
Using Saaty's original AHP, faculty member selection committee faces great challenges when the number of candidates is large. Two methods, singular value decomposition (SVD) in AHP and the duality approach to reduce the number of pairwise comparisons are studied and compared in terms of time complexity and overall rank result. Experiments showed that the SVD is preferred over the duality in AHP
