Theoretical calculations for solid oxygen under high pressure
The crystal structure of solid oxygen at low temperatures and at pressures up
to 7 GPa is studied by theoretical calculations. In the calculations, the
adiabatic potential of the crystal is approximated by a superposition of
pair-potentials between oxygen molecules calculated by an ab-initio method. The
monoclinic alpha structure is stable up to 6 GPa and calculated lattice
parameters agree well with experiments. The origin of a distortion and that of
an anisotropic lattice compressibility of the basal plane of alpha-O2 are
clearly demonstrated. In the pressure range from 6 to 7 GPa, two kinds of
structures are proposed by X-ray diffraction experiments: the alpha and
orthorhombic delta structures. It is found that the energy difference between
these structures becomes very small in this pressure range. The relation
between this trend and the incompatible results of X-ray diffraction
experiments is discussed.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure
A Case of Thrombotic Thrombocytopenia Purpura Associated with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: Diagnostic Utility of ADAMTS-13 Activity
Thrombotic thrombocytopenia purpura (TTP) caused by a deficiency in ADAMTS-13 activity is considered to involve a subset of thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA). Although concept of TTP is included under the umbrella of TMA, discrimination of TTP from TMA is occasionally difficult in an autoimmune disorder. Herein, we report a case with TTP associated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). In this case, it was difficult to discriminate TTP from TMA and the measurement of ADAMTS-13 activity was useful for obtaining an accurate diagnosis. SLE patients having thrombocytopenia in complication with anemia should be considered a monitoring of ADAMTS-13 activity even though the patients lacked symptoms of TTP related to the microvascular coagulation
Structural basis for tropomyosin overlap in thin (actin) filaments and the generation of a molecular swivel by troponin-T
Head-to-tail polymerization of tropomyosin is crucial for its actin binding, function in actin filament assembly, and the regulation of actin-myosin contraction. Here, we describe the 2.1 Å resolution structure of crystals containing overlapping tropomyosin N and C termini (TM-N and TM-C) and the 2.9 Å resolution structure of crystals containing TM-N and TM-C together with a fragment of troponin-T (TnT). At each junction, the N-terminal helices of TM-N were splayed, with only one of them packing against TM-C. In the C-terminal region of TM-C, a crucial water in the coiled-coil core broke the local 2-fold symmetry and helps generate a kink on one helix. In the presence of a TnT fragment, the asymmetry in TM-C facilitates formation of a 4-helix bundle containing two TM-C chains and one chain each of TM-N and TnT. Mutating the residues that generate the asymmetry in TM-C caused a marked decrease in the affinity of troponin for actin-tropomyosin filaments. The highly conserved region of TnT, in which most cardiomyopathy mutations reside, is crucial for interacting with tropomyosin. The structure of the ternary complex also explains why the skeletal- and cardiac-muscle specific C-terminal region is required to bind TnT and why tropomyosin homodimers bind only a single TnT. On actin filaments, the head-to-tail junction can function as a molecular swivel to accommodate irregularities in the coiled-coil path between successive tropomyosins enabling each to interact equivalently with the actin helix

Dissipative Field Theory with Caldeira-Leggett Method and its Application to Disoriented Chiral Condensation
The effective field theory including the dissipative effect is developed
based on the Caldeira-Leggett theory at the classical level. After the
integration of the small field fluctuations considered as the field radiation,
the integro-differential field equation is given and shown to include the
dissipative effects. In that derivation, special cares should be taken for the
boundary condition of the integration. Application to the linear sigma model is
given, and the decay process of the chiral condensate is calculated with it,
both analytically in the linear approximation and numerically. With these
results, we discuss the stability of chiral condensates within the quenched
approximation.Comment: 16pages, ReV-Te
Bipedal humanoid robot that makes humans laugh with use of the method of comedy and affects their psychological state actively
This paper describes the bipedal humanoid robot that makes human laugh with its whole body expression and affect human’s psychological state. In order to realize "Social interaction" between human and robot, the robot has to affect human’s psychological state actively. We focused on "laugh" because it can be thought as a typical example for researching "Social interaction". Looking through a Japanese comedy style called "manzai" or the art of conversation, we picked out several methods for making human laugh. Then we made several skits with the advice of comedians, and made the whole body humanoid robot perform them. Results of experimental evaluation with these skits shows that the robot’s behavior made subjects laugh and change their psychological state seen as a decrease of "Depression" and "Anger"
