    Regional connectivity in continental ASEAN

    This chapter examines the issue on Mekong region’s connectivity on quantitative base through the analysis of the gravity trade model and its modified fragmentation model. The main findings are as follows: First, the evolution of international production networks (IPNs) between Thailand and Vietnam as well as the other advanced ASEAN could be identified in terms of their two-way trade integration of machinery parts and components beyond the gravity trade standard. Second, the trade intensity of machinery parts and components, in particular, the one between Thailand and Vietnam, could be partly explained by the fragmentation factors, i.e. their gaps in per capita GDP and the relatively lower service-link costs in Vietnam, through the fragmentation-model estimation. Third, the trade disintegration of machinery parts and components between Thailand and Mekong latecomers, such as Cambodia and Myanmar, could be explained by their higher service-link costs also through the fragmentation-model estimation. This chapter also investigates the border area development in Mekong region, which is a crucial issue for the connectivity in a continental area. Since the border areas have their own area-advantages called “border bonuses”: “complementary factor endowment” and “cross-border infrastructure services”, the areas might be the real gateways for IPN penetration across the countries in Mekong region, if their development were carefully designed. This was proved by the success stories of forerunners: the Maquila case at US-Mexico border and the Savannakhet SEZ at Thai-Lao PDR border. Considering their lessons, the strategies for border area development should be careful designing of institutional frameworks for Special Economic, enhancing outer-link connectivity from borders to central cities, and securing labor forces with skill developments

    Spacial and temporal variations of water characteristics in the Japan Sea bottom layer

    The Japan Sea is an almost landlocked marginal sea. We measured profiles of CTD potential temperature at 9 stations in the southeastern Japan Sea to clarify the characteristics of the abyssal circulation in the Sea. It was shown that the results were closely correlated with the topography of the Japan Sea which is characterized by a rise in the center of the Sea (Yamato Rise) and three basins (Japan, Yamato and Tsushima Basins) around the Yamato Rise.At each station in the Basins (6 stations), we observed the bottom layer, a layer of constant potential temperature (within ±0.0005°C) below 2,000–2,500 m depth to the bottom. Dissolved oxygen is also constant (within ±1 ÎŒmol kg−1) in the bottom layer. The bottom layer of the Japan Basin (northern basin) is shown to have lower potential temperature by 0.012°C and higher dissolved oxygen content by 5 ÎŒmol kg−1 than that of the Yamato Basin (southern basin). There is no bottom layer at the remaining 3 stations located in the passage between the Japan Basin and the Yamato Basin, possibly due to the topographic effect of the Yamato Rise which restricts the exchange and mixing of the two Basin bottom waters.By comparing the vertical profiles of dissolved oxygen in 1969, 1977, 1979 and 1984 in the Japan and the Yamato Basins, it was found that in both Basins the thickness of the bottom layer decreased by 400 m between 1969 and 1984, and the bottom oxygen concentration was also decreased by 5–7 ÎŒmol kg−1 between 1977 and 1984. These temporal variations were interpreted to be transient, probably caused by the recent reduction or cessation of new bottom water formation in the northern Japan Sea

    This paper investigates the advantages and disadvantages of more segmented payment standards in earthquake insurance in Japan using a simple economic model. Using this analysis, we conclude that more segmented payment standards are desirable when the targeted consumers have higher incomes because these consumers tend to need insurance money at a relatively later time, whereas more segmented payment standards are not desirable when the targeted consumers have lower incomes because their need for insurance money arises relatively quickly following the earthquake

    Hepatitis C virus quasispecies in cancerous and noncancerous hepatic lesions: the core protein-encoding region.

    We have shown that highly proofreading DNA polymerase is required for the polymerase chain reaction in the genetic analysis of hepatitis C virus (HCV). To clarify the status of HCV quasispecies in hepatic tissue using proofreading DNA polymerase, we performed a genetic analysis of the HCV core protein-encoding region in cancerous and noncancerous lesions derived from 4 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma. In contrast to the previously published data, we observed neither deletions nor stop codons in the analyzed region and no significant difference in the complexity of HCV quasispecies between cancerous and noncancerous lesions. This result suggests that the HCV core gene is never structurally defective in hepatic tissues, including cancerous lesions. However, in 3 of the patients, the consensus HCV species differed between cancerous and noncancerous lesions, suggesting that the predominant replicating HCV species differs between these 2 types of lesions. Moreover, during the course of the study, we obtained several interesting variants possessing a substitution at codon 9 of the core gene, whose substitution has been shown to induce the production of the F protein synthesized by a - 2/+1 ribosomal frameshift.</p

    Time taken to the maximum increase in the oxygenated hemoglobin level in calf muscle as a predictor of mild and moderate post-thrombotic syndrome

    AbstractBackgroundNear-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) allows continuous noninvasive monitoring of changes in the tissue levels of oxygenated hemoglobin (O2Hb) and deoxygenated hemoglobin (HHb) and can identify the severity of chronic venous diseases. Here we investigated the predictors of post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) using NIRS in patients with a first episode of deep venous thrombosis (DVT).MethodsThe study enrolled 129 patients with DVT. Risk factors in each patient were assessed at presentation. Venous abnormalities confirmed by ultrasound and parameters derived from NIRS were evaluated at 6 months after DVT. On standing, increases in O2Hb and HHb (ΔO2Hbst and ΔHHbst) and the times taken for each concentration to become maximal (TO2Hbst, and THHbst) were measured. During 10 tiptoe movements, O2Hb showed a continuous decrease (ΔO2Hbex), whereas venous expulsion (ΔHHbEex) and subsequent retention (ΔHHbRex) were observed. The oxygenation index (HbD; HbD = O2Hb − HHb) was also calculated at the end of standing and at the end of 10 tiptoe movements (ΔHbDst and ΔHbDex). Final clinical manifestations were evaluated at 6 years, and PTS was considered to be present if the Villalta score was ≄5.ResultsThirteen patients were excluded and 116 patients were finally included. Of these, 19 (16%) developed PTS. Among various NIRS-derived parameters, TO2Hbst had the highest area under the curve (0.88; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.80-0.93; P < .01) with the best cutoff value (TO2Hbst ≀48 seconds). On univariate analysis, variables associated with greater risk for development of PTS were stroke (odds ratio [OR], 5.59; 95% CI, 0.74-42.41; P = .06), idiopathic DVT (OR, 4.13; 95% CI, 1.36-12.55; P < .01) and iliofemoral DVT (OR, 4.31; 95% CI, 1.48-12.60; P < .01) at initial presentation, venous occlusion combined with reflux (OR, 4.24; 95% CI, 1.50-12.00; P < .01), and NIRS-derived TO2Hbst ≀48 seconds (OR, 43.03; 95% CI, 9.04-204.81; P < .01) at 6 months. Multivariate logistic regression analysis finally revealed venous occlusion combined with reflux (OR, 4.80; 95% CI, 1.03-22.36; P < .05) and NIRS-derived TO2Hbst ≀48 seconds (OR, 53.73; 95% CI, 8.43-342.41; P < .01) to be independently associated with PTS progression.ConclusionsNIRS-derived TO2Hbst ≀48 seconds is a promising time-course predictor of PTS progression

    Inhibition of breast cancer regrowth and pulmonary metastasis in nude mice by anti-gastric ulcer agent, irsogladine.

    金æČąć€§ć­ŠćŒ»ć­Šéƒšé™„ć±žç—…é™ąIrsogladine is a commonly used anti-gastric ulcer agent in Japan, and recent in vivo studies have shown it to have anti-angiogenic properties. The exact role of irsogladine as an inhibitor of angiogenesis remains uncertain. In this study, we show that irsogladine inhibited breast cancer regrowth and pulmonary metastasis but had no anti-angiogenic function against HUVEC cells. Irsogladine failed to inhibit proliferation, tubular formation, and the uPA/MMP-1 mRNA expression of HUVEC cells. We also examined the effect of irsogladine in an orthotopic transplant model of human breast cancer metastasis in athymic mice. Human MDA-MB-435 cells were injected into the mammary fat pads. After 9 weeks, the tumors were resected under general anesthesia. Irsogladine or vehicle was given p.o. daily thereafter. Daily administration of irsogladine at 120 mg/kg per day over a 5-week period had no effect on the body weight of the mice. Tumor regrowth, average volume of pulmonary metastases, and the number of metastases were inhibited by 40, 48 and 64%, respectively. These results suggest that irsogladine may be useful in the breast cancer adjuvant setting

    On-Orbit Operations of A Power System For Japan’s Venus Explorer Akatsuki

    This paper describes on-orbit operations of a power system for Japan’s Venus explorer Akatsuki. It was launched on May 20, 2010, and approached Venus on December 7, 2010, but orbit insertion failed because of a propulsion system malfunction. After the failure, the spacecraft stayed on an orbit nearer to the sun than Venus for 5 years before successfully entering an orbit around Venus in 2015. Telemetry data that show radiation degradation of the solar arrays, and here analytical results by the relative damage coefficients method are presented. The capacity loss of the batteries was successfully suppressed by lowering the state of charge and temperature. We plan to extend the mission period from 4.5 years to longer than 9 years to obtain more fruitful scientific results
