Career Adaptability, Resilience,and Life Satisfaction in Italian and Belgian middle school student
Young people need to help to prepare to plan their future, to consider multiple career
options, to be supported to develop positive life trajectories and to cope with social-economic
conditions related to uneasiness, discomfort, and confusion.
Considering the recent studies and the Life Design approach, the present study aimed at
analyzing the relationship between career adaptability, resilience and life satisfaction on Belgian
and Italian middle school students' life satisfaction. Specifically was hypothesized that career
adaptability, directly and indirectly (i.e., through resilience) would predict life satisfaction in Italian
and Belgian middle school students. Furthermore, it was predicted that the conceptual model would
be comparable across countries.
The data suggest that career adaptability is directly and indirectly, through resilience,
related to life satisfaction in both the Italian and Belgium middle school students. These results have
important implications for practice notably to support middle school students in their life design
process
History and modes of star formation in the most active region of the Small Magellanic Cloud, NGC 346
We discuss the star formation history of the SMC region NGC 346 based on
Hubble Space Telescope images. The region contains both field stars and cluster
members. Using a classical synthetic CMD procedure applied to the field around
NGC 346 we find that there the star formation pace has been rising from a quite
low rate 13 Gyr ago to \approx 1.4 \times 10^{-8} Mo yr^{-1}pc^{-2} in the last
100 Myr. This value is significantly higher than in other star forming regions
of the SMC. For NGC 346 itself, we compare theoretical and observed
Color-Magnitude Diagrams (CMDs) of several stellar sub-clusters identified in
the region, and we derive their basic evolution parameters. We find that NGC
346 experienced different star formation regimes, including a dominant and
focused "high density mode", with the sub-clusters hosting both pre-main
sequence (PMS) and upper main sequence (UMS) stars, and a diffuse "low density
mode", as indicated by the presence of low-mass PMS sub-clusters.
Quantitatively, the star formation in the oldest sub-clusters started about 6
Myr ago with remarkable synchronization, it continued at high rate (up to 2
\times 10^{-5} Mo yr^{-1} pc^{-2}) for about 3 Myr and is now progressing at a
lower rate. Interestingly, sub-clusters mainly composed by low mass PMS stars
seem to experience now the first episode of star formation, following
multi-seeded spatial patterns instead of resulting from a coherent trigger. Two
speculative scenarios are put forth to explain the deficiency of UMS stars: the
first invokes under-threshold conditions of the parent gas; the second
speculates that the initial mass function (IMF) is a function of time, with the
youngest sub-clusters not having had sufficient time to form more massive

Stories of courage in a group of adults with Substance Use Disorder
The treatment for drug addiction is considered a difficult path for the most of patients. As matter of fact, individuals with Substance Use Disorder (SUD) experience numerous challenges before, during and after the treatment (e.g. tackling an unpredictable, uncertain and paradoxically negative future, tackling the anxiety and anticipatory fear of physical pain associated with abstinence; decide to go beyond self-justification and self-deception). Courage could be considered a positive and functional resource to help people with SUD to face challenges and difficulties related to treatment. In connection therewith, the aim of this study was to examine, using an embedded mix method analysis, the personal stories of courage of 80 individuals with SUD in order to identify the themes and types of courage used in their life. The analysis carried out showed that individuals with SUD reported more frequently stories of courage related to their SUD condition respect to other life situation. Moreover, the quantitative analysis showed that participants used more frequently psychological courage respect to moral and physical courage when these stories were referred to their SUD condition then other life situations
Mean age gradient and asymmetry in the star formation history of the Small Magellanic Cloud
We derive the star formation history in four regions of the Small Magellanic
Cloud (SMC) using the deepest VI color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) ever obtained
for this galaxy. The images were obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys
onboard the Hubble Space Telescope and are located at projected distances of
0.5-2 degrees from the SMC center, probing the main body and the wing of the
galaxy. We derived the star-formation histories (SFH) of the four fields using
two independent procedures to fit synthetic CMDs to the data. We compare the
SFHs derived here with our earlier results for the SMC bar to create a deep
pencil-beam survey of the global history of the central SMC. We find in all the
six fields observed with HST a slow star formation pace from 13 to 5-7 Gyr ago,
followed by a ~ 2-3 times higher activity. This is remarkable because dynamical
models do not predict a strong influence of either the LMC or the Milky Way
(MW) at that time. The level of the intermediate-age SFR enhancement
systematically increases towards the center, resulting in a gradient in the
mean age of the population, with the bar fields being systematically younger
than the outer ones. Star formation over the most recent 500 Myr is strongly
concentrated in the bar, the only exception being the area of the SMC wing. The
strong current activity of the latter is likely driven by interaction with the
LMC. At a given age, there is no significant difference in metallicity between
the inner and outer fields, implying that metals are well mixed throughout the
SMC. The age-metallicity relations we infer from our best fitting models are
monotonically increasing with time, with no evidence of dips. This may argue
against the major merger scenario proposed by Tsujimoto and Bekki 2009,

The dusty Nebula surrounding HR Car: a Spitzer view
We present mid-IR observations of the Galactic Luminous Blue Variable (LBV)
HR Car and its associated nebula carried out with the Spitzer Space Telescope
using both IRAC and IRS, as part of a GTO program aimed to study stellar ejecta
from evolved stars. Our observations reveal a rich mid-IR spectrum of the inner
nebula showing both solid state and atomic gas signatures. Strong
low-excitation atomic fine structure lines such as m [\ion{Fe}{2}]
and m [\ion{Si}{2}], indicate, for the first time, the presence of a
PDR in this object class. While the physics and chemistry of the low-excitation
gas appears to be dominated by photodissociation, a possible contribution due
to shocks can be inferred from the evidence of gas phase Fe abundance
enhancement. The presence of amorphous silicates, inferred from the observed
characteristic broad feature at m located in the inner nebula, suggests
that dust has formed during the LBV outburst. This is in contrast with the
detection of crystalline dust in other probably more evolved Galactic LBVs,
which is similar to the crystalline dust observed in red supergiants. This has
been considered to be evidence of dust production during evolutionary phases

L2 immersion causes non-native-like L1 pronunciation in German attriters
According to Flege׳s Speech Learning Model, the speech sounds of a bilingual׳s languages are contained in one common phonological space. This predicts bidirectional influence on the articulation of these speech sounds. We investigated the influence of a late-learned second language (L2) on the first language (L1) in a group of German L1 attriters in Anglophone North America (i.e., long-term emigrants in L2 immersion). These speakers were compared to a control group of monolingual German L1 speakers in two analyses: First, L1 speech samples of both groups were rated for native-likeness. Attriters sounded less native-like to raters, with 40% of the attriters rated below the monolingual range. Native-likeness was negatively associated with length of residence abroad and positively associated with L1 use. Second, formant analyses on four speech sounds of German—/aː/, /ɛ/, /ɔ/ and /l/—were conducted for attriters and controls. For these analyses, two attriter subgroups were formed: one with speakers who sounded native-like to raters and one with speakers who did not. It was hypothesised that the formants in both groups would shift in the direction of similar L2 speech sounds and that the shift would be stronger in non-native-like attriters. The first hypothesis was partly confirmed: At least one attriter group differed from the control group on one formant of /aː/ and /l/. These differences were consistent with predictions based on the L2. The second hypothesis was not confirmed: There was no evidence that the formants of the non-native-like attriters deviated more strongly from the monolingual baseline than those of the native-like attriters. Additionally, the formant values and the ratings were found to be only weakly associated, suggesting a different source of the perceptibly non-native-like pronunciation in some attriters
