    Evaluation of the correlation between dental occlusion and posture using a force platform

    OBJECTIVES: Force platforms are widely used to evaluate the relationship between posture and dental occlusion. This study evaluated whether force platforms are able to detect eventual postural modifications resulting from dental occlusion. METHOD: A total of 44 healthy volunteers who were given no information on the aim of the study underwent six postural stabilometric exams under different mandibular and visual conditions. Four parameters were considered: sway area, sway velocity, X axis displacement of the center of the foot pressure and Y axis displacement of the center of the foot pressure. RESULTS: An analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed the relative influence of each factor; specifically, the ocular afference significantly influenced the sway area and sway velocity parameters, and the mandibular position had only aweakinfluence on theswayareaparameter. CONCLUSIONS: Vision was shown to influence body posture, and a weak correlation was observed between mandibular position and body posture in healthy subjects. However, the force platform is most likely not able to clearly detect this relationship. Gnathologists must use caution when using force platform analysis to modify a therapeutic plan. The sway area seems to be the most sensitive parameter for evaluating the effect of occlusion on body posture

    Dentoskeletal effects of the bitejumping appliance and the twin-block appliance in the treatment of skeletal class ii malocclusion: A retrospective controlled clinical trial

    The current retrospective controlled trial aimed to compare the dentoskeletal effects of the Bite-Jumping (BJ) and the Twin- Block Appliance (TB) in the treatment of skeletal Class II malocclusion. The sample was screened for eligibility criteria including skeletal and dental Class II malocclusion; Cervical Vertebral Maturation at Stage 3 at treatment start, and Func- tional orthopedic treatment with either a TB or BJ appliances. Twenty-three patients treated with TB, and twenty-three treated with BJ were included. Cephalometric data were compared with a control group of 15 untreated subjects retrieved from the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation Craniofacial Growth Legacy Collection. Baseline character- istics were similar between groups. A significant increase for the AO-BO dimension, and a significant decrease in the over- jet, were registered for both study groups respect to controls. TB was more effective than BJ in increasing the mandibu- lar length (Co-Gn), in reducing the ANB angle and changing the SNB angle. The resulting differences between the two groups could be attributed to the different appliances. In conclusion, both appliances demonstrated a clinical efficacy in treating Class II. TB seems therefore better indicated, respect to BJ, in Class II cases with a predominant component of mandibular hypoplasia

    Norway spruce postglacial recolonization of Fennoscandia

    Contrasting theories exist regarding how Norway spruce recolonized Fennoscandia after the last glaciation. Here, the authors provide evidences from sedimentary ancient DNA and modern population genomics to support that Norway spruce was present in southern Fennoscandia shortly after deglaciation and the early Holocene migration from the east. Contrasting theories exist regarding how Norway spruce (Picea abies) recolonized Fennoscandia after the last glaciation and both early Holocene establishments from western microrefugia and late Holocene colonization from the east have been postulated. Here, we show that Norway spruce was present in southern Fennoscandia as early as 14.7 +/- 0.1 cal. kyr BP and that the millennia-old clonal spruce trees present today in central Sweden likely arrived with an early Holocene migration from the east. Our findings are based on ancient sedimentary DNA from multiple European sites (N = 15) combined with nuclear and mitochondrial DNA analysis of ancient clonal (N = 135) and contemporary spruce forest trees (N = 129) from central Sweden. Our other findings imply that Norway spruce was present shortly after deglaciation at the margins of the Scandinavian Ice Sheet, and support previously disputed finds of pollen in southern Sweden claiming spruce establishment during the Lateglacial.Peer reviewe

    Strengthening global-change science by integrating aeDNA with paleoecoinformatics

    Ancient environmental DNA (aeDNA) data are close to enabling insights into past global-scale biodiversity dynamics at unprecedented taxonomic extent and resolution. However, achieving this potential requires solutions that bridge bioinformatics and paleoecoinformatics. Essential needs include support for dynamic taxonomic inferences, dynamic age inferences, and precise stratigraphic depth. Moreover, aeDNA data are complex and heterogeneous, generated by dispersed researcher networks, with methods advancing rapidly. Hence, expert community governance and curation are essential to building high-value data resources. Immediate recommendations include uploading metabarcoding-based taxonomic inventories into paleoecoinformatic resources, building linkages among open bioinformatic and paleoecoinformatic data resources, harmonizing aeDNA processing workflows, and expanding community data governance. These advances will enable transformative insights into global-scale biodiversity dynamics during large environmental and anthropogenic changes

    Shedding light on typical species : implications for habitat monitoring

    Habitat monitoring in Europe is regulated by Article 17 of the Habitats Directive, which suggests the use of typical species to assess habitat conservation status. Yet, the Directive uses the term “typical” species but does not provide a definition, either for its use in reporting or for its use in impact assessments. To address the issue, an online workshop was organized by the Italian Society for Vegetation Science (SISV) to shed light on the diversity of perspectives regarding the different concepts of typical species, and to discuss the possible implications for habitat monitoring. To this aim, we inquired 73 people with a very different degree of expertise in the field of vegetation science by means of a tailored survey composed of six questions. We analysed the data using Pearson's Chi-squared test to verify that the answers diverged from a random distribution and checked the effect of the degree of experience of the surveyees on the results. We found that most of the surveyees agreed on the use of the phytosociological method for habitat monitoring and of the diagnostic and characteristic species to evaluate the structural and functional conservation status of habitats. With this contribution, we shed light on the meaning of “typical” species in the context of habitat monitoring

    Correlation between Bruxism and Gastroesophageal Reflux Disorder and Their Effects on Tooth Wear. A Systematic Review

    Bruxism and gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) can lead to wear of the dental tissues. Wear has a mechanical or chemical origin, and it is of extrinsic or intrinsic type. Bruxism and GERD are two etiological factors of dental wear. The intrinsic mechanical wear (abfraction) of Bruxism and intrinsic chemical wear (erosion) of GERD are both involved in sleep disorders; indeed, they could have associations and act in synergy in dental wear. The purpose of this review was to find out the possible associations between bruxism and GERD and their effects on tooth wear. The research was conducted on PubMed and the Cochrane Library using the following Keywords/Mesh Terms: Tooth wear, Bruxism, Sleep Bruxism, Sleep Disorders, or GERD. Only systematic reviews and clinical studies performed exclusively on human subjects were included in the review. Initially, the research gave more than 630 results on dental wear, bruxism and GERD and after application of the inclusion criteria irrelevant studies were excluded, and 5 studies were finally included in this review. It was possible to observe the presence of some associations between the two problems (reflux and GERD) and hypothesize negative effects on tooth wear. This research revealed the presence of an interconnection between these three problems (reflux, GERD and tooth wear) that can further act in synergy by attacking the hard dental tissues both from a chemical (reflux) and mechanical (bruxism) point of view. The dentist could play a role of “sentinel” in a multidisciplinary team, intercepting these problems early in order to treat them in the most appropriate way.     Reduced levels of genomic damage in young martial artists

    The impact of physical activity on the levels of genomic damage is still poorly understood. In this work, we aimed to investigate the influence of a constant martial arts training on the levels of DNA damage. Moreover, we explored the possible association between genomic damage and single-gene polymorphisms on metabolic and DNA repair genes. To do this, we compared the frequency of micronuclei and other nuclear aberrations in the buccal mucosa cells of 35 healthy, young martial artists with 35 healthy, young sedentary controls. Additionally, we genotyped all participants for three metabolic and two DNA repair genes to evaluate the impact of the relative single-gene polymorphisms on DNA damage. Genomic damage was significantly lower in athletes than in sedentary controls, as evidenced by a decrease in both micronuclei and total aberrations. Instead, single-gene polymorphisms did not significantly alter the frequencies of aberrations. These findings suggest that training may have a protective effect against genomic damage, supporting the health benefits provided by physical activity. The influence of other factors should be considered, and further studies focusing on disciplines with different training regimes are necessary to evaluate thoroughly their influence on genomic damage
