    Evaluation of Some Adjuvants in Improving Foliar Fertilizers Efficiency

    A series of lab and field experiments were carried out to evaluate the possibility of using some substances as adjuvants added to the foliar fertilizer tank to improve fertilizer application and enhance use efficiency. Each of the suggested substances was prepared in 10 concentrations treatments, ranging between 0.05 and 2g/L. The effect of each concentration on static surface tension and static contact angle in liquid/air/glass and solid plant leaves/air interface were used to evaluate and find out the optimum concentration of each substance to be used as an adjuvant. An Adjmix-D1 was pre-pared using 0.6g/L Triethanolamine and 0.6g/L liquid soap as surfactants, 0.6g/L glycerin as a humectant, 0.6 g/L Arabic gum as a sticker and 0.6g/L urea as a penetrator. The obtained results showed that fruit yield as well as N, K, Fe, Zn and Mn contents in white eggplants and cucumber leaves are positively increased by the applications of improved foliar fertilizers (IFF). This increase can be arranged in the following descending order: Adjmix-D1 > Adjmix-D2 > Liquid soap > Rixi film > Triethanolamine. It could be concluded that the Adjmix-D1 can be used as an effective adjuvant for improving foliar fertilizer application efficiency

    Potentiating Biosynthesis of Alkaloids and Polyphenolic Substances in <i>Catharanthus roseus</i> Plant Using ĸ-Carrageenan

    Catharanthus roseus is a medicinal plant that produces indole alkaloids, which are utilized in anticancer therapy. Vinblastine and vincristine, two commercially important antineoplastic alkaloids, are mostly found in the leaves of Catharanthus roseus. ĸ-carrageenan has been proven as plant growth promoting substance for a number of medicinal and agricultural plants. Considering the importance of ĸ-carrageenan as a promoter of plant growth and phytochemical constituents, especially alkaloids production in Catharanthus roseus, an experiment was carried out to explore the effect of ĸ-carrageenan on the plant growth, phytochemicals content, pigments content, and production of antitumor alkaloids in Catharanthus roseus after planting. Foliar application of ĸ-carrageenan (at 0, 400, 600 and 800 ppm) significantly improved the performance of Catharanthus roseus. Phytochemical analysis involved determining the amount of total phenolics (TP), flavonoids (F), free amino acids (FAA), alkaloids (TAC) and pigments contents by spectrophotometer, minerals by ICP, amino acids, phenolic compounds and alkaloids (Vincamine, Catharanthine, Vincracine (Vincristine), and vinblastine) analysis uses HPLC. The results indicated that all examined ĸ-carrageenan treatments led to a significant (p ≤ 0.05) increase in growth parameters compared to the untreated plants. Phytochemical examination indicates that the spray of ĸ-carrageenan at 800 mg L−1 increased the yield of alkaloids (Vincamine, Catharanthine and Vincracine (Vincristine)) by 41.85 μg/g DW, total phenolic compounds by 3948.6 μg gallic/g FW, the content of flavonoids 951.3 μg quercetin /g FW and carotenoids content 32.97 mg/g FW as compared to the control. An amount of 400 ppm ĸ-carrageenan treatment gave the best contents of FAA, Chl a, Chl b and anthocyanin. The element content of K, Ca, Cu, Zn and Se increased by treatments.     Synthesis, Antibacterial Evaluation, and Computational Studies of a Diverse Set of Linezolid Conjugates

    The development of new antibiotics to treat multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria or possess broad-spectrum activity is one of the challenging tasks. Unfortunately, there are not many new antibiotics in clinical trials. So, the molecular hybridization approach could be an effective strategy to develop potential drug candidates using the known scaffolds. We synthesized a total of 31 diverse linezolid conjugates 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15 using our established benzotriazole chemistry with good yield and purity. Some of the synthesized conjugates exhibited promising antibacterial properties against different strains of bacteria. Among all the synthesized compounds, 5d is the most promising antibacterial agent with MIC 4.5 &micro;M against S. aureus and 2.25 &micro;M against B. subtilis. Using our experimental data pool, we developed a robust QSAR (R2 = 0.926, 0.935; R2cvOO = 0.898, 0.915; R2cvMO = 0.903, 0.916 for the S. aureus and B. subtilis models, respectively) and 3D-pharmacophore models. We have also determined the drug-like properties of the synthesized conjugates using computational tools. Our findings provide valuable insight into the possible linezolid-based antibiotic drug candidates

    180 Is it a risk of stroke in Wolff Parkinson White syndrome?

    Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a major cause of stroke. AF incidence is increased in Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome (WPW), represents about 10% of spontaneous arrhythmias and has several mechanisms as the degeneration of atrioventricular reentrant tachycardia (AVRT) into AF, the AF facilitation by the atrial insertion of accessory pathway (AP) or another origin. The purpose of study was to assess the incidence of stroke in patients (pts) who had a preexcitation syndrome.Population707 pts aged from 5 to 85 years (mean 34.5±17) were studied for a WPW: 93 pts had unexplained syncope; 247 pts were asymptomatic; 367 pts had spontaneous tachycardias; among these pts 52 had documented AF. Electrophysiological study (EPS) consisted of atrial pacing and programmed atrial stimulation in control state and if necessary after infusion of isoproterenol. Clinical and electrophysiological data were collected.ResultsStroke was noted in 5 pts (0.7%), 2 women, 3 men aged from 53 to 75 years. They had a normal carotid and transcranial Doppler ultrasonography. One pt had ischemic heart disease and the remaining pts had no heart disease. Their age was significantly older than remaining population (62±9 years vs 34±17) (p<0.0002). Only one pt had spontaneous AF; 51 other pts with spontaneous AF had no stroke. One of 247 was asymptomatic; one pt of 93 had syncope and 2 pts of 315 had spontaneous AVRT. At EPS, one asymptomatic pt had AP with long refractory period and no inducible tachycardia. Two pts with spontaneous tachycardias had only inducible AVRT and the pt with spontaneous AF had inducible antidromic tachycardia and AF. The pt with syncope had only inducible AF. These electrophysiological data did not differ from the remaining population. Anticoagulants were maintained after AP ablation, although the disappearance of arrhythymias.ConclusionsThe risk of stroke in WPW syndrome is very low (0.7%). Only one clinical factor differs significantly from remaining population, the relatively old age (mean 62±9 years). All other clinical factors as sex, associated heart disease, spontaneous symptoms and all electrophysiological data did not differ from remaining population

    Safety and efficacy of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to reduce ileus after colorectal surgery

    Background: Ileus is common after elective colorectal surgery, and is associated with increased adverse events and prolonged hospital stay. The aim was to assess the role of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for reducing ileus after surgery. Methods: A prospective multicentre cohort study was delivered by an international, student- and trainee-led collaborative group. Adult patients undergoing elective colorectal resection between January and April 2018 were included. The primary outcome was time to gastrointestinal recovery, measured using a composite measure of bowel function and tolerance to oral intake. The impact of NSAIDs was explored using Cox regression analyses, including the results of a centre-specific survey of compliance to enhanced recovery principles. Secondary safety outcomes included anastomotic leak rate and acute kidney injury. Results: A total of 4164 patients were included, with a median age of 68 (i.q.r. 57\u201375) years (54\ub79 per cent men). Some 1153 (27\ub77 per cent) received NSAIDs on postoperative days 1\u20133, of whom 1061 (92\ub70 per cent) received non-selective cyclo-oxygenase inhibitors. After adjustment for baseline differences, the mean time to gastrointestinal recovery did not differ significantly between patients who received NSAIDs and those who did not (4\ub76 versus 4\ub78 days; hazard ratio 1\ub704, 95 per cent c.i. 0\ub796 to 1\ub712; P = 0\ub7360). There were no significant differences in anastomotic leak rate (5\ub74 versus 4\ub76 per cent; P = 0\ub7349) or acute kidney injury (14\ub73 versus 13\ub78 per cent; P = 0\ub7666) between the groups. Significantly fewer patients receiving NSAIDs required strong opioid analgesia (35\ub73 versus 56\ub77 per cent; P &lt; 0\ub7001). Conclusion: NSAIDs did not reduce the time for gastrointestinal recovery after colorectal surgery, but they were safe and associated with reduced postoperative opioid requirement

    Safety of hospital discharge before return of bowel function after elective colorectal surgery

    Background: Ileus is common after colorectal surgery and is associated with an increased risk of postoperative complications. Identifying features of normal bowel recovery and the appropriateness for hospital discharge is challenging. This study explored the safety of hospital discharge before the return of bowel function.Methods: A prospective, multicentre cohort study was undertaken across an international collaborative network. Adult patients undergoing elective colorectal resection between January and April 2018 were included. The main outcome of interest was readmission to hospital within 30 days of surgery. The impact of discharge timing according to the return of bowel function was explored using multivariable regression analysis. Other outcomes were postoperative complications within 30 days of surgery, measured using the Clavien-Dindo classification system.Results: A total of 3288 patients were included in the analysis, of whom 301 (9.2 per cent) were discharged before the return of bowel function. The median duration of hospital stay for patients discharged before and after return of bowel function was 5 (i.q.r. 4-7) and 7 (6-8) days respectively (P &lt; 0.001). There were no significant differences in rates of readmission between these groups (6.6 versus 8.0 per cent; P = 0.499), and this remained the case after multivariable adjustment for baseline differences (odds ratio 0.90, 95 per cent c.i. 0.55 to 1.46; P = 0.659). Rates of postoperative complications were also similar in those discharged before versus after return of bowel function (minor: 34.7 versus 39.5 per cent; major 3.3 versus 3.4 per cent; P = 0.110).Conclusion: Discharge before return of bowel function after elective colorectal surgery appears to be safe in appropriately selected patients
