The early days of the Sculptor dwarf spheroidal galaxy
We present the high resolution spectroscopic study of five -3.9<=[Fe/H]<=-2.5
stars in the Local Group dwarf spheroidal, Sculptor, thereby doubling the
number of stars with comparable observations in this metallicity range. We
carry out a detailed analysis of the chemical abundances of alpha, iron peak,
light and heavy elements, and draw comparisons with the Milky Way halo and the
ultra faint dwarf stellar populations. We show that the bulk of the Sculptor
metal-poor stars follows the same trends in abundance ratios versus metallicity
as the Milky Way stars. This suggests similar early conditions of star
formation and a high degree of homogeneity of the interstellar medium. We find
an outlier to this main regime, which seems to miss the products of the most
massive of the TypeII supernovae. In addition to its value to help refining
galaxy formation models, this star provides clues to the production of cobalt
and zinc. Two of our sample stars have low odd-to-even barium isotope abundance
ratios, suggestive of a fair proportion of s-process; we discuss the
implication for the nucleosynthetic origin of the neutron capture elements.Comment: Replacement after language editio
Definitive spectroscopic determination of the transverse interactions responsible for the magnetic quantum tunneling in Mn12-acetate
We present detailed angle-dependent single crystal electron paramagnetic
resonance (EPR) data for field rotations in the hard plane of the S=10 single
molecule magnet Mn12-acetate. A clear four-fold variation in the resonance
positions may be attributed to an intrinsic fourth order transverse anisotropy
(O44). Meanwhile, a four-fold variation of the EPR lineshapes confirms a
recently proposed model wherein disorder associated with the acetic acid of
crystallization induces a locally varying quadratic (rhombic) transverse
anisotropy (O22). These findings explain most aspects of the magnetic quantum

Geldanamycin and herbimycin A induce apoptotic killing of B chronic lymphocytic leukemia cells and augment the cells' sensitivity to cytotoxic drugs.
We studied the actions of geldanamycin (GA) and herbimycin A (HMA), inhibitors of the chaperone proteins Hsp90 and GRP94, on B chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) cells in vitro. Both drugs induced apoptosis of the majority of CLL isolates studied. Whereas exposure to 4-hour pulses of 30 to 100 nM GA killed normal B lymphocytes and CLL cells with similar dose responses, T lymphocytes from healthy donors as well as those present in the CLL isolates were relatively resistant. GA, but not HMA, showed a modest cytoprotective effect toward CD34+ hematopoietic progenitors from normal bone marrow. The ability of bone marrow progenitors to form hematopoietic colonies was unaffected by pulse exposures to GA. Both GA and HMA synergized with chlorambucil and fludarabine in killing a subset of CLL isolates. GA- and HMA-induced apoptosis was preceded by the up-regulation of the stress-responsive chaperones Hsp70 and BiP. Both ansamycins also resulted in down-regulation of Akt protein kinase, a modulator of cell survival. The relative resistance of T lymphocytes and of CD34+ bone marrow progenitors to GA coupled with its ability to induce apoptosis following brief exposures and to synergize with cytotoxic drugs warrant further investigation of ansamycins as potential therapeutic agents in CLL
Does rotation of B stars depend on metallicity? preliminary results from GIRAFFE spectra
We show the vsini distribution of main sequence B stars in sites of various
metallicities, in the absolute magnitude range -3.34 < Mv < -2.17. These
include Galactic stars in the field measured by Abt et al. (2002), members of
the h & chi Per open clusters measured by North et al. (2004), and five fields
in the SMC and LMC measured at ESO Paranal with the FLAMES-GIRAFFE
spectrograph, within the Geneva-Lausanne guaranteed time. Following the
suggestion by Maeder et al. (1999), we do find a higher rate of rapid rotators
in the Magellanic Clouds than in the Galaxy, but the vsini distribution is the

Mapping the complete glycoproteome of virion-derived HIV-1 gp120 provides insights into broadly neutralizing antibody binding
The surface envelope glycoprotein (SU) of Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), gp120SU plays an essential role in virus binding to target CD4+ T-cells and is a major vaccine target. Gp120 has remarkably high levels of N-linked glycosylation and there is considerable evidence that this “glycan shield” can help protect the virus from antibody-mediated neutralization. In recent years, however, it has become clear that gp120 glycosylation can also be included in the targets of recognition by some of the most potent broadly neutralizing antibodies. Knowing the site-specific glycosylation of gp120 can facilitate the rational design of glycopeptide antigens for HIV vaccine development. While most prior studies have focused on glycan analysis of recombinant forms of gp120, here we report the first systematic glycosylation site analysis of gp120 derived from virions produced by infected T lymphoid cells and show that a single site is exclusively substituted with complex glycans. These results should help guide the design of vaccine immunogens
Perceived importance of components of asynchronous music in circuit training
This study examined regular exercisers’ perceptions of specific components of music
during circuit training. Twenty-four men (38.8 years, s = 11.8 years) and 31 women
(32.4 years, s = 9.6 years) completed two questionnaires immediately after a circuit
training class. Participants rated the importance of 13 components of music (rhythm,
melody, etc.) in relation to exercise enjoyment, and each completed the Affect Intensity
Measure (Larsen, 1984) to measure emotional reactivity. Independent t tests were used
to evaluate gender differences in perceptions of musical importance. Pearson
correlations were computed to evaluate the relationships between affect intensity, age
and importance of musical components. Consistent with previous research and
theoretical predictions, rhythm response components (rhythm, tempo, beat) were rated
as most important. Women rated the importance of melody significantly higher than did
men, while men gave more importance to music associated with sport. Affect intensity
was found to be positively and significantly related to the perceived importance of
melody, lyrical content, musical style, personal associations and emotional content.
Results suggest that exercise leaders need to be sensitive to personal factors when
choosing music to accompany exercise. Qualitative research that focuses on the
personal meaning of music is encouraged
Semiconductive and Photoconductive Properties of the Single Molecule Magnets Mn-Acetate and FeBr
Resistivity measurements are reported for single crystals of
Mn-Acetate and FeBr. Both materials exhibit a
semiconductor-like, thermally activated behavior over the 200-300 K range. The
activation energy, , obtained for Mn-Acetate was 0.37 0.05
eV, which is to be contrasted with the value of 0.55 eV deduced from the
earlier reported absorption edge measurements and the range of 0.3-1 eV from
intramolecular density of states calculations, assuming = , the
optical band gap. For FeBr, was measured as 0.73 0.1 eV,
and is discussed in light of the available approximate band structure
calculations. Some plausible pathways are indicated based on the crystal
structures of both lattices. For Mn-Acetate, we also measured
photoconductivity in the visible range; the conductivity increased by a factor
of about eight on increasing the photon energy from 632.8 nm (red) to 488 nm
(blue). X-ray irradiation increased the resistivity, but was insensitive

Excess AGN Activity in the z=2.30 Protocluster in HS 1700+64
We present the results of spectroscopic, narrow-band and X-ray observations
of a z=2.30 protocluster in the field of the QSO HS 1700+643. Using a sample of
BX/MD galaxies, which are selected to be at z~2.2-2.7 by their rest-frame
ultraviolet colours, we find that there are 5 protocluster AGN which have been
identified by characteristic emission-lines in their optical/near-IR spectra;
this represents an enhancement over the field significant at ~98.5 per cent
confidence. Using a ~200 ks Chandra/ACIS-I observation of this field we detect
a total of 161 X-ray point sources to a Poissonian false-probability limit of
4x10^{-6} and identify 8 of these with BX/MD galaxies. Two of these are
spectroscopically confirmed protocluster members and are also classified as
emission-line AGN. When compared to a similarly selected field sample the
analysis indicates this is also evidence for an enhancement of X-ray selected
BX/MD AGN over the field, significant at ~99 per cent confidence. Deep Lya
narrow-band imaging reveals that a total of 4/123 Lya emitters (LAEs) are found
to be associated with X-ray sources, with two of these confirmed protocluster
members and one highly likely member. We do not find a significant enhancement
of AGN activity in this LAE sample over that of the field (result significant
at only 87 per cent confidence). The X-ray emitting AGN fractions for the BX/MD
and LAE samples are found to be 6.9_{-4.4}^{+9.2} and 2.9_{-1.6}^{+2.9} per
cent, respectively, for protocluster AGN with L_{2-10 keV}>4.6x10^{43} erg
s^{-1} at z=2.30. These findings are similar to results from the z=3.09
protocluster in the SSA 22 field found by Lehmer et al. (2009), in that both
suggest AGN activity is favoured in dense environments at z>2.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS
Characterization of the S = 9 excited state in Fe8Br8 by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance
High Frequency electron paramagnetic resonance has been used to observe the
magnetic dipole, M = 1, transitions in the excited
state of the single molecule magnet FeBr. A Boltzmann analysis of the
measured intensities locates it at 24 2 K above the ground
state, while the line positions yield its magnetic parameters D = -0.27 K, E =
0.05 K, and B = -1.3 10 K. D is thus smaller by 8%
and E larger by 7% than for . The anisotropy barrier for is
estimated as 22 K,which is 25% smaller than that for (29 K). These
data also help assign the spin exchange constants(J's) and thus provide a basis

Understanding Face and Shame: A Servant-Leadership and Face Management Model
Clergy can have a negative impact on churches and other individuals when they knowingly or unknowingly attempt to save face, that is, try to protect their standing or reputation. The desire to gain face and the fear of losing face and feeling ashamed will likely permeate clergy’s decision-making processes without even being noticed. This study explores the essence of face and face management and the relationship between face management and two characteristics of servant-leadership—awareness and healing—in both Chinese and American churches through the methodology of hermeneutic phenomenology. Prior to this study, to my knowledge, no hermeneutic phenomenological research of face management has been conducted in a church setting. Through a review of the literature, four areas are explored: face and shame, face management, servant-leadership, and face, shame, and face management within the church. This study obtained approval from the Institutional Review Board and informed consent from the participants. Three Chinese and three American Christian ministers were chosen to complete a question sheet and participate in two semi-structured interview sessions. A first cycle of open coding and second cycle of pattern coding were used during data analysis. Face experiences are discussed in light of eight major themes: body, triggers, becoming, face concepts, strategies, emotions, servant-leadership, and the church. Findings from the study help build a servant-leadership and face management model, which can offer an anchored approach for clergy and pastoral counselors to address face and shame and to develop therapeutic interventions
