This map is of Eagle Creek and Hazel Creek in Swain County, North Carolina showing both creeks flowing into the Little Tennessee River. Much of the lower portion of Hazel Creek is now part of Fontana Lake. This map was made by the N.C. Geological Survey in 1906, four decades before the construction of Fontana Dam. The map was one among many collected by Horace Kephart (1862-1931). No doubt he was interested in this map given that he lived on Hazel Creek from 1904 until 1907 and there began his intensive study of Southern Appalachian life
