    The social psychology of collective victimhood

    Collective victimhood, which results from the experience of being targeted as members of a group, has powerful effects on individuals and groups. The focus of this Special Issue is on how people respond to collective victimhood and how these responses shape intergroup relations. We introduce the Special Issue with an overview of emerging social psychological research on collective victimhood. To date, this research has focused mostly on destructive versus positive consequences of collective victimhood for relations with an adversary group, and examined victim groups' needs, victim beliefs, and underlying social identity and categorization processes. We identify several neglected factors in this literature, some of which are addressed by the empirical contributions in the current issue. The Special Issue offers novel perspectives on collective victimhood, presenting findings based on a diverse range of methods with mostly community samples that have direct and vicarious experiences of collective harm in different countries

    COMPARATIVE GROWTH AND YIELD EVALUATION OF DIFFERENT HIGH YIELDING WHEAT VARIETIES UNDER RAINFED CONDITIONS OF ATTOCK.

    The experiment was conducted at the farmer’s field Attock during the year 2015-16. Six wheat Varieties i.e Aas 2011, Bars 2009, Narc 2009, Chakwal 50 and Pakistan 13 were evaluated for yield performance. Results revealed that all the varieties differ significantly in yield parameters.  The varieties Narc 2009 and Pakistan 13 were best performer with 36.34mds/acre and 36.14mds/acre yield respectively and are recommended for cultivation in rainfed conditions of Attock District

    The utilisation of virtual images in patient information giving sessions for prostate cancer patients prior to radiotherapy

    © 2016 The College of RadiographersThe aim of the study was to explore the prostate patients' perceptions of a Virtual Environment for Radiotherapy Training (VERT) as an information giving resource prior to radiotherapy delivery. A survey design was used to determine the level of knowledge of those patients who attended VERT for a pre-treatment talk and identify the benefits and limitations of using VERT as pre-treatment information giving resource. Participants were invited to attend a VERT patient information session four weeks prior to their planning CT scan, and then complete a questionnaire two weeks after start of radiotherapy treatment. A sample of n = 38 patients were recruited over a five month data collection period. Results showed that patient perceptions on the use of VERT as information giving tool prior to radiotherapy treatment were very positive. The sessions enable patients to understand the potential impact of treatment volumes if the internal organ shape and location differed from that originally planned, enabling them to comply with radiotherapy treatment instructions. Additional key findings have demonstrated excellent levels of communication associated with the use of VERT emphasising the need for future patient preparation strategies to consider the use of virtual technology

    Cross match-CHMM fusion for speaker adaptation of voice biometric

    The most significant factor affecting automatic voice biometric performance is the variation in the signal characteristics, due to speaker-based variability, conversation-based variability and technology variability. These variations give great challenge in accurately modeling and verifying a speaker. To solve this variability effects, the cross match (CM) technique is proposed to provide a speaker model that can adapt to variability over periods of time. Using limited amount of enrollment utterances, a client barcode is generated and can be updated by cross matching the client barcode with new data. Furthermore, CM adds the dimension of multimodality at the fusion-level when the similarity score from CM can be fused with the score from the default speaker modeling. The scores need to be normalized before the fusion takes place. By fusing the CM with continuous Hidden Markov Model (CHMM), the new adapted model gave significant improvement in identification and verification task, where the equal error rate (EER) decreased from 6.51% to 1.23% in speaker identification and from 5.87% to 1.04% in speaker verification.     Introduction: Childhood blepharokeratoconjunctivitis is a common lid margin inflammation with secondary ocular surface disease. Its etiology is unclear and there are no randomized controlled trials to support the superiority of any treatment option. / Areas covered: We searched the following databases; Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Ovid MEDLINE and affiliated Ovid databases, EMBASE, the ISRCTN registry, Clinical- Trials.gov and the World Health Organization International Clinical Trials Registry Platform. Due to the paucity of pediatric data we also considered information from articles focused on adults. / Expert commentary: Treatment is based on the assumption that the mechanisms of BKC and rosacea keratitis are the same: meibomian gland dysfunction, bacterial colonisation of the lid margin, delayed type hypersensitivity, Demodex folliculorum, genetic predisposition and Toll-like receptors inducing release of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Generally accepted grading scales are needed. Randomized clinical trials are needed to evaluate treatment options. The effects of antibiotics, immunomodulators, osmoprotectants and essential fatty acids need further investigation
