The third on the train : on class and travel in the 19th century
Autor przedstawia relacje pomiędzy kategorią klasy a podróżowaniem w XIX wieku. W tych specyficznych eskapadach, stanowiących jednostronne przekraczanie granic klasy, można dostrzec swoistą tęsknotę za przygodą, odmianą i urozmaiceniem, niemal integralnymi elementami podróżowania w epoce przedindustrialnej, a coraz bardziej niedostępnymi w czasach, gdy postęp techniczny narzucił podróży żelazną dyscyplinę
Of Industry and Imagination
In the second half of the 18th century when the process of the industrialisation of the countryside only started to gain momentum, industry, of which the railway was later to become such a powerful symbol, was not regarded as being entirely at variance with the landscape. Rather, it was treated as one of many practices of taming or disciplining nature, diverse operations of improvement in the course of which nature could receive a new aesthetic aspect or become turned to account through the exploitation of its resources. In the words of Barrie Trinder, rationality and order were brought to a landscape that was unkempt or to one which was wild

Analiza dziewiętnastowiecznych tekstów angielskich o zagrożeniach dla człowieka płynących z budowy i eksploatacji kolei żelaznych w dziewiętnastowiecznej Anglii
"So many pages a day" : writing, compulsion, and modernity
Artykuł jest analizą procesu twórczego ukazanego w powieści George’a Gissinga New Grub
Street.
w wypadku, gdy pracę wieńczą sukces i satysfakcja.
niż sugerował Beard, źródłem trosk i lęków, wręcz śmiertelną udręką. Pisanie może zmienić
się w doświadczenie traumatyczne, gdy zdeterminowane ekonomicznym przymusem, dyktaturą
bezwzględnych praw rynku wydawniczego i presją czasu polega głównie, a często wyłącznie, na
zapełnianiu określonej liczby stron w określonym terminie. O ile podobne napięcia nie były dla
twórców niczym nowym, o tyle w drugiej połowie dziewiętnastego wieku – w realiach komercjalizacji
kultury – uległy zintensyfikowaniu, stanowiącemu jedną z cech nowoczesności
A tour of reading : "The Man of the Crowd"
There are many different gifts many of us owe to Professor
Tadeusz Sławek. The one which stands out for me is the practice
of reading, such reading that takes its time, that is patient and
respectful of details, but which also takes risks in making
unconventional connections, that negotiates between the inside
and the outside of a literary text. And which does not have to
arrive to a conclusion to make sense. Hence the following piece
which engages, along these very lines, with Edgar Allan Poe’s
short story, “The Man of the Crowd,” once given such prominence
through Walter Benjamin’s writings[…
The letter of seduction
"Rust and must and cobwebs" : of accumulation and circulation in Dickens’s "Bleak House"
A reading of distance in the Kantian sublime
Kant’s text comes to be read from the vantage-point of footnotes and
examples, its voice-overs. The discourse of The Critique of Judgement or, more
precisely, “The Analytic of the Beautiful” is, in fact, instituted by a footnote
which by being anchored to the title rather than the text comes before its letter.
And as Jacques Derrida says this gloss “touches on a difficulty so decisive that
one cannot see why it does not constitute the principal text of which it forms
the ground bass, that is, the unwritten or underwritten space”
E.M. Forster's Tea-Table
One may as well begin with an entry from Katherine Mansfield’s Journal.
“E. M. Forster never gets any further than warming the teapot. He’s a
rare fine hand at that. Feel this teapot. Is it not beautifully warm? Yes, but
there ain’t going to be no tea.” What we could take from Mansfield’s
frustration with E. M. Forster’s thwarted climaxes is the image of the table
laid for tea: the teapot warmed up, but tea never poured out, perhaps not
even made. That she blended this particular image into her comment should
not surprise one for, indeed, Howards End abounds with the scenes constructed
around the tea-table, in which, though, the actual repast matters little
since food hardly gets mentioned and might even be completely forgotten.
It is not on this account that the tea-table in Forster tantalises the reader and
it is not in the apparent withholding of victuals that its inadequacy inheres
for when food, whether in its ugliness or exquisiteness, monopolises the
table, as it does on several occasions, its centrality comes to no good. Clearly, Forster does not conceive the tea-table as a gastronomic affair and if the teatable
poses all sorts of difficulties and complications, whereby it often
precariously tilts, this is because it is primarily a social situation, a locus
and representation of domestic and public relations, a demonstration of how
people are with one another
Investigations of vortex structures in granular materials under earth pressure conditions by DEM
The evolution of shear zones in initially medium dense cohesionless sand for quasi-static earth pressure problems of a retaining wall was analysed with a 3D discrete element method DEM using spheres with contact moments. The passive sand failure for a very rough retaining wall undergoing horizontal translation was discussed. Attention was paid to vortex and anti-vortex structures appearing in granular shear zones. Three different methods were introduced to find granular vortices
