Mesoscopic Thermovoltage Measurement Design
Quantitative thermoelectric measurements in the mesoscopic regime require
accurate knowledge of temperature, thermovoltage, and device energy scales. We
consider the effect of a finite load resistance on thermovoltage measurements
of InAs/InP heterostructure nanowires. Load resistance and ac attenuation
distort the measured thermovoltage therefore complicating the evaluation of
device performance. Understanding these effects improves experimental design

Quantum-dot thermometry
We present a method for the measurement of a temperature differential across
a single quantum dot that has transmission resonances that are separated in
energy by much more than the thermal energy. We determine numerically that the
method is accurate to within a few percent across a wide range of parameters.
The proposed method measures the temperature of the electrons that enter the
quantum dot and will be useful in experiments that aim to test theory which
predicts quantum dots are highly-efficient thermoelectrics.Comment: 3 pages, 4 Figure
Redshift constraints for RGB 0136+391 and PKS 0735+178 from deep optical imaging
We present the results of deep I-band imaging of two BL Lacerate objects, RGB
0136+391 and PKS 0735+178, during an epoch when the optical nucleus was in a
faint state in both targets. In PKS 0735+178 we find a significant excess over
a point source, which, if fitted by the de Vaucouleurs model, corresponds to a
galaxy with I = 18.64 +- 0.11 and r_eff = 1.8 +- 0.4 arcsec. Interpreting this
galaxy as the host galaxy of PKS 0735+178 we derive z = 0.45 +- 0.06 using the
host galaxy as a "standard candle". We also discuss the immediate optical
environment of PKS 0735+178 and the identity of the MgII absorber at z = 0.424.
Despite of the optimally chosen epoch and deep imaging we find the surface
brightness profile of RGB 0136+391 to be consistent with a point source. By
determining a lower limit for the host galaxy brightness by simulations, we

The measurement of very low conductivity and dielectric loss in XLPE cables: A possible method to detect degradation due to thermal aging
The dielectric response of crosslinked polyethylene (XLPE) insulated, miniature power cables, extruded with inner and outer semicons, was measured over the frequency range 10-4 to 104 Hz at temperatures from 20 to 100 °C. A dielectric spectrometer was used for the frequency range 10-4 to 10-2 Hz. A bespoke noise-free power supply was constructed and used to measure the dc conductivity and, using a Fourier transform technique, it was also used to measure the very low dielectric tanδ losses encountered at frequencies of 1 to 100 Hz. Tanδ measurements of <;10-5 were found in this frequency range and attributed to a β-mode dielectric relaxation lying above 100 Hz due to motion of chain segments in the amorphous region and an β-mode relaxation lying below 1 Hz window due to twists of chains in the crystal lamellae. The dc conductivity measurements were consistent with those of the dielectric spectrometer and indicate lower dc conductivities in vacuum degassed cables than have been previously reported for XLPE (less than 10-17 S.m-1). The conduction process is thermally activated with an activation energy of approximately 1.1 eV. Higher conductivities were found for non-degassed cables. A transformer ratio bridge was used for measurements in the range 1 to 10 kHz; loss in this region was shown to be due to the series resistance of the semicon layers. Thermal ageing of the cables at 135 °C for 60 days caused significant increases in the conductivity and tanδ and it is considered that such measurements may be a sensitive way of measuring electrical degradation due to thermal aging
Levitated droplet dye laser
We present the first observation, to our knowledge, of lasing from a
levitated, dye droplet. The levitated droplets are created by computer
controlled pico-liter dispensing into one of the nodes of a standing ultrasonic
wave (100 kHz), where the droplet is trapped. The free hanging droplet forms a
high quality optical resonator. Our 750 nL lasing droplets consist of Rhodamine
6G dissolved in ethylene glycol, at a concentration of 0.02 M. The droplets are
optically pumped at 532 nm light from a pulsed, frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser,
and the dye laser emission is analyzed by a fixed grating spectrometer. With
this setup we have achieved reproducible lasing spectra in the visible
wavelength range from 610 nm to 650 nm. The levitated droplet technique has
previously successfully been applied for a variety of bio-analytical
applications at single cell level. In combination with the lasing droplets, the
capability of this high precision setup has potential applications within
highly sensitive intra-cavity absorbance detection.Comment: 6 pages including 3 figure
DIFFERENCES IN U.S. CONSUMER PREFERENCES FOR CERTIFIED PORK CHOPS WHEN FACING BRANDED VS. NON-BRANDED CHOICES
Consumers' preferences for credence attributes of a product may differ from each other, when facing the choices between branded and/or non-branded products. We test this hypothesis with conditional and mixed logit regression using data obtained by choice experiment surveys. The results suggest that, on average, consumers are willing to pay more for a certification attribute when the product is branded. Additionally, greater variation in consumer willingness-to-pay is observed in the non-branded case. This latter characteristic of the results may represent the increased uncertainty some consumers internalize concerning quality consistency when brand information is not provided. Lifting Grobner bases from the exterior algebra
In the article "Non-commutative Grobner bases for commutative algebras",
Eisenbud-Peeva-Sturmfels proved a number of results regarding Grobner bases and
initial ideals of those ideals in the free associative algebra which contain
the commutator ideal. We prove similar results for ideals which contains the
anti-commutator ideal (the defining ideal of the exterior algebra). We define
one notion of generic initial ideals in the free assoicative algebra, and show
that gin's of ideals containing the commutator ideal, or the anti-commutator

Adherence to prophylaxis in adolescents and young adults with severe haemophilia, A qualitative study with patients

Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.Abstract Introduction: Reported levels of adherence to prophylaxis among young people with haemophilia (YPH) vary widely and are predominately based on estimations made by healthcare professionals and parents. Reasons for (non)adherence among YPH in particular have not been evidenced. Aim: to examine experiences in relation to prophylaxis with YPH themselves, and barriers and facilitators to their adherence. Methods: 11 Participants were recruited in five haemophilia centres across England and Wales. All patients who met the inclusion criteria (aged 12-25, diagnosed with haemophilia, on prophylaxis) were approached during a routine check-up appointment, and all participants who agreed to take part were interviewed. Interviews were audio recorded, transcribed and analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. Results: Self-reported adherence to prophylaxis was good. Few participants admitted to intentionally skipping injections although they reported sometimes forgetting. However, due to the increasingly personalised and flexible approach to prophylaxis, adherence is not straightforward to define. Barriers to adherence included a busy lifestyle, dislike of the intravenous injection, venous access issues, anxiety or stress and being out of one’s normal routine. Support was an important facilitator to adherence, including support from health professionals at the haemophilia centre as well as friends. Parents appear to be very involved with their sons’ haemophilia management, even after their sons leave home. Conclusion: What this study adds is that the increasingly flexible and personalized approach to managing prophylaxis in haemophilia may sometimes lead to confusion around treatment frequency and dosing. This may lead to accidental non-adherence, which is distinct from both skipping and forgetting. Advice from haemophilia teams may not always be consistent, and is likely to be interpreted differently by different individuals. Some additional training and education of patients and their families to increase their knowledge and skills around prophylaxis may reduce this confusion and therefore is likely to improve adherence further.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
