Simulation Modeling of Integrated Multi-Carrier Energy Systems

    Get PDF
Integrated multi-carrier energy systems give good possibilities to have high effectiveness of energy supply to consumers. Transformation of energy systems under the impact of internal and external factors remarkably strengthens the technological integration of those systems and supports development of integrated multi-carrier energy systems. The concept of energy hub is developed for modeling and simulation of integrated multi-carrier energy systems. Based on previous research, a simulation model of the energy hub is being developed. The basic principles of building a simulation model of an energy hub concept are discussed. Realization of simulation model using Matlab/Simulink is proposed. Simulation results for the integrated electricity and heat systems are explained to demonstrate the capabilities of the simulation energy hub model. A case study for application of the simulation model is discussed

Electric Power System Transformations: A Review of Main Prospects and Challenges

    No full text
The paper deals with the main prospects and challenges of radical transformations of electric power systems (EPSs) with changes in their structure and properties conditioned by wide use of innovative energy-related technologies and digitalization and intellectualization of system operation and control. Structural trends of EPS development are the focus of the analysis. Consideration is given to changes in EPS properties driven by the use of new technologies, to the problems of system flexibility and to its enhancement. EPS “resiliency” and “survivability” notions are subjected to comparison. The main factors favoring the formation of future EPSs to cyber-physical systems are discussed. Objective trends of EPS control and protection system development are under consideration

Flexibility Enhancement in an Islanded Distribution Power System by Online Demand-Side Management

    Get PDF
The paper considers the possibilities of increasing the flexibility of power distribution systems by real-time load management. The principles of the implementation of special automatic systems for this purpose are proposed. These systems enable some loads of specific consumers of the power distribution system switched to islanded operation to “shift” from the daily maximum to the minimum, which makes some generators available to connect certain essential consumers disconnected earlier by under-frequency load shedding system to the power system. The approach under consideration is illustrated by a power system with distributed generation

Analysis of electricity supply systems flexibility and problems to be investigated

    No full text
The problem of electric power systems (EPS) flexibility is discussed, definition of EPS flexibility is given. Causes of EPS flexibility degradation and measures for flexibility enhancement are analyzed based on the review of publications. Urgent problems of EPS flexibility studies are identified and directions of further studies of the electricity supply systems are grounded

Flexibility and Resiliency of Electric Power Systems: Analysis of Definitions and Content

    Get PDF
This paper deals with actively studied terms “flexibility” and “resiliency” of electric power systems (EPS). Definitions and content of these new fundamental EPS properties are analysed. Objective trends in development of EPS with regard to these properties are discussed. Possible measures for improving flexibility and resiliency of EPS are suggested

The Optimal Mechanism Design of Retail Prices in the Electricity Market for Several Types of Consumers

    No full text
In this paper, we discuss the demand side management (DSM) problem: how to incentivize a consumer to equalize the load during the day through price-dependent demand. Traditionally, the retail market offers several electricity payment schemes. A scheme is effective when the different tariffs satisfy different consumers. At the same time, the existing and generally accepted retail pricing schemes can lead to an "adverse selection" problem when all consumers choose the same price, thereby, reducing the possible general welfare. We propose an optimal design of pricing mechanisms, taking into account the interests of the electricity supplier and different types of consumers. The results of our work are that the optimal mechanism is implemented simultaneously for several periods, including the case when the ratio of types of consumers in periods changes. In addition, the mechanism proposed by us, in contrast to the studies of other researchers, provides an equilibrium close to the socially optimal maximum. We describe the implementation algorithm of the mechanism and provide examples of its action in the electric power system with different types and numbers of consumers

Power Industry Reliability Coordination in Asia in a Market Environment

This paper addresses the problems of power supply reliability in a market environment. The specific features of economic interrelations between the power supply organization and consumers in terms of reliability assurance are examined and the principles of providing power supply reliability are formulated. The economic mechanisms of coordinating the interests of power supply organization and consumers to provide power supply reliability are discussed. Reliability of restructuring China’s power industry is introduced. Some reliability data is provided. The data shows that the reliability level has increased significantly in the past two decades. More and more measures are being applied to guarantee reliability of the restructured power systems. The reliability issues and challenges that are facing the Chinese power industry are considered The paper, then examines the evolution of power grids in India, the establishment of a regulatory framework, and operational philosophy in reliability aspects of long-, mid- as well as short-term (operational / outage) planning. Grid security, restoration, and mock trial for black start, etc. from the reliability angle are considered. Related issues for islanding operation to improve service reliability for Thailand’s Electric Power System are then analyzed

System methodology of energy research: for the 100th anniversary of the State Electrification Plan of Russia

    No full text
The conditions of State Electrification Plan of Russia (GOELRO plan) preparation as common unified state economic plan are under consideration. Plan was prepared during the pressed period less one year since February to December of the 1920 by State Commission GOELRO including twenty very qualified engineers and scientists and involving time by time additionally about two hundred specialists. A relation of GOELRO plan and development of energy policy of former USSR and current Russia is discussed. GOELRO plan was the comprehensive technical, financial and social oriented plan for qualitative restoration of Russia. But later state energy policy lost social oriented sense and now it is formal set of documents inside energy industry. Taking into account digitalization and intellectualization of economics and social sphere the social oriented role of energy sector as infrastructural industry is growing. Basic points of comprehensive energy method are presented. It was the main methodological instrument for preparation of GOELRO plan. Prerequisites and key aspects of energy system research methodology are explained. Modern challenges in current power sector are formulated
